This idea has been softly rattling in my head ever since it was revealed Yuji and Choso are related, and the idea is much louder now. Definitely controversial ( even I hurt a little just thinking it ) — I don't think Choso would forgive Yuji so easily for killing his brothers. Yes, he loves Yuji dearly, but he loves and loved his other siblings more. They were stuck together in those tubes communicating with each other ( my hc ). They were each other's worlds. I think Choso would take some serious time to organize his thoughts and emotions on the matter. Naturally he understands Yuji had no choice, yet that does not erase the pain of profound loss and the emotional turbulence as a result.

Had Choso survived the ultimate fight, he would have liked to talk in depth about this matter with Yuji with a hopeful outcome of paying respect to their fallen siblings.

I do imagine that all the Death Painting Wombs were conscious the moment of their creation and were more sentient than Kenjaku ever anticipated. The majority of them were capable of seeing beyond their cylindrical chambers and even those without developed eyes/eye sight could perceive sound and sensation. Thus, all of them knew who their father/maker was intimately, his face engrained into their minds, but it was Chōsō who demonstrated the greatest ability to decipher that Kenjaku was an enemy which needed to be destroyed.

I also imagine that Kenjaku knew the Death Painting Wombs could communicate with each other and experimented with this theory either by isolation or by subjecting one to pain (first determining IF they demonstrated a pain response) and observing the response in the other siblings. Their communication was far more sophisticated than Kenjaku ever surmised, however not all demonstrated a sophisticated manner of communication such as speech.

Some simply projected their emotions while others could talk for they learned speech from watching Kenjaku. What may have sounded as gurgling and bubbling noises to anyone watching the siblings, each Death Painting Womb had a unique voice or sensation. Even if all communicated at the same time to one another, each could decipher individual voices. Because Chōsō was the eldest, his manner of communication was the most developed, and he absolutely loved when his siblings came to existence.

Digits made small to articulate the hands of a childling feel unfit , unseemly , the sensations both magnified and subdued.  No , these were not her hands ; they were merely designs.  And even then , who was she ( immortal maleficence , bred & born a vessel of self-eating ruin ) to claim them ?  The innocence in the still-soft flesh and delicate fingers— The foremothers would have scoffed to see her now , taking to a body to suit a bond forged by accident , a bond that – despite all effort besides – remains half-sealed and half-alive ( ironic , isn’t it ? ).

Tactile she is , her palms – with flesh rewritten and rewoven to assume a shape that mimicked a not-brother – swept side-to-side along the dew-damp grass. Her eyes drift slowly closed , the world too much , too alive , even in the middle of the night when it is said that all would sleep and be at peace ( queer word , that , for what does it mean ? where can it be find if it cannot be made ? or forcibly stolen ? ).  She grips the grass to the root , tearing and pulling , like wrenching hair from a man’s scalp ; an idle , but restless gesture.

Her fingers twitch when his emotional resonance changes , fleetingly.  That one-sided tether binding them together striking a dissonant chord and holding her suspended for a brief , significant moment.  The thread burns , tightens , and within her blood thins , running hotter , painting her veins with something fierce and curdled and altogether ugly : anger.  She wanted to ask about it , she wanted to chase the sensation , she wanted … Many things , in truth.  But a good sister knows her place.  She refrains.

Did he not know pain ?  Annwyl found that hard to believe.

Still , ❝ Have you not … ? ❞ Annwyl sighs , put-upon , ❝ Pain is … Feeling.  Physical.  Or emotional.  Something that makes you hurt , makes you bleed , makes you scream , makes you want to cry— ❞ Her clawed hands have hoisted from wounding the earth and have instead begun to gesticulate , waving about as she talks before flopping back to her sides.  Her eyes blink open , head turning to look up at him.  ❝ … Your anger , Choso , is caused by pain.  Hurt is … Powerful.  A force. It can be useful. ❞

The Serpent’s words come to her now , unbidden , as if summoned : You have more sense of dying than living.  More , you know pain better than pleasure.  Make it your crucible.  Let it become you.

She could not do that to Choso.  No , would not— At least , not until he was ready to understand such a lesson.

pAAAAAAIn. pAAAiNNN. aaask! ask! kamo noritoshi noted that his experiments gurgled and bubbled inside their cylindrical confidents; the unmistakable sounds of life but only that, for him. what chōsō heard was the sounds of his siblings talking, and some were certainly more eager than others to voice either their experiences or their curiosities. none, however, demonstrated any negative emotions that chōsō and chōsō alone was able to experience the world and have such conversations. negative emotions were normal for any animal, perhaps more so for something that was half-curse — an entity very literally born from negative emotions. some of this siblings felt more than he for PAIN resonated in their souls. the only sort of anger or pain chōsō could feel was toward his father maker.

the sensation was more of a buzzing like the last sounds of dying cicadas far into the forest. the aftershocks of a light tremor and not an earthquake of great magnitude. so little chōsō knew, and yet he knew that noritoshi's grinning face was something vile and worth destroying. pain is feeling. physical. he's known it all his deplorable and short life, but so engrained it was in his existence it was his normal, though he had never wanted to scream or cry. he didn't know what either of two things meant. he had witnessed several villagers raise their voices but not cry. round-faced and the size of a human toddler he might have been, but he was a weapon. for what end cause he knew not, yet a call to action stimulated him like a dog bred to herd.

❛ my creator. i want to kill him. i want to destroy him. ❜

it was his duty as noritoshi's creator and as the eldest brother, and while his siblings were welcome to join in the fight for their autonomy, chōsō felt it was his burden to carry. he had not considered any other possibility, though . . . here they were, and she knew more about this existence. adamantly and as if his face aged ten years, he looked to his companion with a sudden fire inside normally dull-bored eyed.

❛ can i do it? can i kill it? ❜

HUMAN , HUMAN , HUMAN—Should you say something enough , the meaning might present itself , may be made clearer. Instead , the word falls to the hollows of her thoughts ; without definition , and certainly without understanding , echoing ad infinitum til it makes for nonsense punctured between memories. In all her times , she had known words were heavy things , each held a consequence depending on how one strung them together. But this— it was as empty as her flesh , an incomprehensible nonexistence ( how is she to explain that to one barely alive one age ? ).

Still , he affirms it , nodding emphatically as he assures her of her humanity. And who would she be to deny the opinion of her brother ? She feels guilty at the bile of doubt rising to her tongue , chewed back and swallowed down despite herself ( this is not a conversation he is prepared to have & not for the first time , she is reminded of the clear difference between them — the gulf of eras , the essence of experience ). Simply , Annwyl grants him a nod , a false smile that wavers by the seams.

❝ I am grateful you think so ,❞ For his is the only opinion that mattered. Well , his and her consul , Obi , who now busied himself with the Man of the House and his malignant machinations ( purely to feed his own whims , that despicable cur ! as if one snake feeding from her was not enough , now there were two ). Her brows hoisted at his words. He cannot feel her ? ❝ That so ? ❞ Concern warbles her trilling , softened soprano , ❝ Strange. I feel you , Brother. ❞ Perhaps because of his act of setting her free , she is not sure ( & she daren’t ask ). A small claw pokes his sternum , above his heart , gently. ❝ I … I know your pulse , I know your scent … ❞ Conflicted , then , she pulls back , as if struck , and recoils from him , electing to flop down on her back beside him. ❝ I wonder … If that is for the best. ❞

For a long while it would seem she does not intend to answer his question , the only reply comes from the night : cries of buzzing things flitting about , the rustle of boughs overhead , the sigh and groan of heat-heavy wind— Finally , a single word comes , pregnant with meaning , ❝ Painful. ❞ And that is the only answer she can provide.

he had a pulse? he had a scent? the half-curse lingered on one thing more than the next and then struggled to keep up with the vast amounts of information being thrown at him, though it was more gently tossed in a way a conversation should have been. ideas and sentiments thrown back and forth like a child's toy. speaking and thinking were living things he struggled to keep up with; that was the cost of freedom. why couldn't humans transmit their ideas through the power of thought like chōsō did with his siblings. all his siblings except one. the odd one.

the container which had not been a vial. the container which had not been kept together with the rest of the death painting wombs. deep down he knew they were not the same, however that was no reason to alienate a human nor refuse to form a bond. he only knows what he and his siblings share, what their malicious creator whispers, and what little he has observed from humans, thus he does not acknowledge her recoiling. he's tainted and pure; he knows nothing. pain.

is that the ache, the obvious discomfort, felt when his siblings remain trapped while he selfishness roams free? that is the only pain chōsō knows. then there was that caterpillar following the shape of his face over cheekbone to jawbone and then circling around ear lobe. the sensation was strange. the tickling and gentle burrowing, until the creature itself decided it did not like this new location and voluntarily dropped away entirely from the half-curse. it prompted him to sit up and observe the noisy forest.

he tested the word on his tongue as if it was a matter of enunciation and not sensation. one of kenjaku's glaring eyes surfaced in his mind, yet it wasn't pain he felt but a sudden gut-coiling anger. it was there and gone.

In the time words break the space between , scant though it is for the lack of politesse , the insistence of close and closer-still-closeness where not even air is spared division between bonds of the covenant ( & the water of the womb shall not matter , besides , loyalty lies in blood , blood , blood ) , wee thing cocks head one way , then the other.  Not … Late ?

Was he certain ? Confusion flutters across doll-like features before body crooks backwards , head craned skyward to track the paces of the moon and stars ( this , a language she knew far better than that of those around her now ; somehow , the cosmos was easier to decipher than the mutterings of Man & we daren’t consider the tongues she swallowed merely to speak the words proper in this lifetime ).  ❝ Oh , I see , ❞ For Annwyl does , in her own mysterious , esoteric sort of way that prompts more questions than answers , ❝ Right on time , then.  That … That is good. ❞  Punctual.  A nice manner to have , so she has been told.  Not that it much mattered to her in her old existences , much less in this one.  But somehow , it felt imperative to extend curtesy to Choso , an inexplicable need to do right by him and by the familial bond that was forged the instant he set her loose upon the world ( completely by accident , but never you mind that ).

She remains perched on his chest , barely budging , content to sit upon him like a roosting night-creature whose eyes flicker-flare eerily in the pallor of the moon.  ❝ Human … ? ❞  The word rolls upon the tongue as if unfamiliar.  Or distasteful.  She is not so sure ( not anymore ).  Her expression shifts again ; frowning lips , creased brows , downcast , almost shameful look as if caught doing something wrong.  ❝ I suppose I must be , ❞ She does not sound certain of that ,  ❝ Brother , do I … Not seem human enough to you ? ❞

the amalgamation of monster and man did not know what prompted the question— the curiosity of a newly born creature learning how it actually was to be alive beyond the confines of a vial. he was free here to speak and think even if his siblings were constantly chattering and offering their input. it was that very input which made him question annwyl's existence. he accepted the role of brother, and quite happily, but creatures, despite how complex or simple, always classified the things around them. human or not them or us. sISter? SIstEr? the voices bubbled in his mind. siSTeR wHErE?? she wasn't trapped and locked away like them, like chōsō had been. why was that? annwyl acknowledging she was human was good enough for him, and he nodded with great assurance.

❛ you are very human which is why i asked. i don't feel you in my head. ❜

life was black and white not in scales of red during his ignorant youth. of course there was something different about her, but if she was not a shared mind with the other death painting wombs floating in their chambers, then surely she was like those villagers he happened across. they came in all different shapes and heights though their dress was more or less the same, as were their hair and their manner of speaking. his maker however. . he did not know what he was; all he saw was a dark aura of stagnant and putrid maliciousness. perhaps he was nothing. still, little chōsō remained on the dirt but again went cross eyed when a beetle scaled the shape of his nose. kouchuu. he heard the villagers say, the smaller ones who ran about with plentiful energy. annwyl couldn't be a beetle but she was small like them ( nevermind the half-curse was also as miniscule ).

a mirror the little creature might have been, for impassive expression was met with impassive expression. the half-curse ( not quite half-human at such an early stage of development ) was not lacking of glee, yet that spectrum of emotions was fickle; a little thrum inside his heart he was incapable of deciphering completely. it he had a heart, did he not? more than her presence, perhaps selfishly, hearing brother prompted further stirring— further development of his emotions. family. sister. if he was brother, then she was sister, except . . he could not feel her nor could he read what was going on in her mind. chōsō had question upon question mounting in his mind, yet she was equally incapable of uncovering the newborn creature's thoughts. late? his gaze unfocused from her eyes and looked past her head to the brightly illuminated sky and the canopy of trees swaying gently with the entrance of a coo wind representative of incoming fall.

❛ no. . not late. i was walking and then, here you are and here i am. ❜

if he felt any discomfort, it was not displayed. he accepted his fate on the earth, even as ants crawled up his arm and a tiny worm began crawling along the shell of his ear. chōsō blinked slowly before refocusing his gaze on her face, though he faced difficulty actually focusing on her features due to their proximity. instead he focused on the stray hairs atop her head and how they too moved with the fall breeze.

❛ were you waiting for me? ❜

he didn't know what to say or what to do. it was easier with his other siblings; even now he heard them in his mind and could feel them floating in their depressing isolation chambers. he mirrored her actions. he mirrored her words. she was very human in that regard, and humans were. . interesting to watch from afar.
