Hey I just wanted to say that I think you're very talented and I love your musics soo much! Thats all actually. I really, really apreciate what you do. Please keep going c:
aww thank u so much! im doing my best ♥
*first four notes of megalovania*
i wrote an entire song just for u anon ♥
honestly all of those accents are unnecessary but im too lazy to take them out (i just needed them for the audio to render correctly lmao)
just pretend this piece is playable. it’s fine
Audio
let’s play a game!!! it’s called “spot the glissando”
Audio
i was just thinking about chara and how they deserved better so obviously making another melancholic string arrangement was the logical course of action
please appreciate my baby
How do you compose music? I'm asking since I'm trying to get a scholarship for composing an original piece and I need help.
Hey, thanks for your ask! honestly, I’m not quite an expert and you might want to ask a music teacher of some sort for advice as well, but here’s some of my own regardless!
The first thing you’re going to need is a place to write it. Most scholarships require your compositions to be notated in sheet music form, and here’s what I use! Musescore’s a particularly easy program, so long as you know how to read sheet music. Of course, you can always handwrite it on staff paper, but a computer program is much easier to proofread with.
Before you do anything else, figure out what mood you’re going for. If you’ve already got a prompt/theme for your project, you can skip this, but otherwise grab a piece of paper and jot down some ideas. Try to be specific if you can! This will also help you with naming your piece later on.
Narrow down your list to two or three and figure out the specific elements that might help you achieve the feeling your going for. For example, you might write “syncopation, fast tempo, minor key” for something like Megalovania. You can probably skip this step too, but for me putting it in writing helps my ADHD brain figure out what the hell I’m supposed to be doing instead of just aimlessly throwing down notes lmao
Ever done improv? Well, now you have! If you’ve got a keyboard this part becomes way easier (probably why most composing degrees require you to have at least some experience with one lol.) Otherwise, whip out whatever instrument you have and play something. It doesn’t have to be a good something. In fact, it probably won’t be a good something. The point is to get a feel for how you want to write what you decided on for step 2, and see if you can work out a few measures of something you like. (If you’re confident and have a notation software like MuseScore you can skip this one, but it’s akin to drawing a person without drawing that little stick figure thing first.)
If you can, bring your laptop over to your instrument (or the reverse if it’s like, a violin or something) and keep playing around with it while you’re writing. Some electric keyboards can even plug directly into your laptop/computer via an MIDI cable!
Now’s the hard part: actually writing it. Honestly, I can’t really tell you how to do it, because everyone has their own way of writing, but here’s a bit of advice/common mistakes I’ve seen:
Write in phrases. This sounds like a no-brainer, but you would not believe how many beginners completely disregard this, and their music ends up sounding like music-note-soup. If you have a 32 measure piece and your audience can’t tell if there are even phrases in it to begin with, you’re going to need to rewrite some of that.
Simplicity is key. Want to know what a good example of this is? The Undertale theme. A few powerful notes can speak volumes. Often when people are composing for a competition, they’ll aim to impress, and it ends up sounding like elaborate garbage. Unless it’s really really good elaborate garbage, the judges are going to prefer something that’s easier to listen to.
Write your melody first, and then everything else underneath it. You can pair a melody with a lot of chords and each can give it a completely different feeling. Again, a really good example of this is the Undertale theme, which is reused with more chord progressions than I can count on two hands.
As a side-note, you still should try to fit your melody to what the parts underneath it are doing, which means you might end up needing to adjust it a little bit. Don’t be afraid to change things up if they aren’t working! (This is where a keyboard becomes extremely useful, since you can use it to play around with two parts at once.)
Know your music theory. This also probably sounds like a no-brainer, but personally music theory always bored me to death as a kid. It becomes essential when you’re composing. If it’s too late to take a class in it for you, chances are your library has some books on it, and there are tons of Youtube channels and websites out there to suit your needs.
Don’t be afraid to erase. If what you’re writing isn’t working for you, or you’ve found new inspiration, then try coming at it from a different angle! And if you find that you aren’t liking your ideas from step 2 after all, don’t be afraid to go back and brainstorm again.
If you’re stuck, take a break or sleep on it. This is really general advice that applies to a lot of things, but you’re likely to find inspiration somewhere else if you take a moment to breathe. Just make sure to come back to it!
Keep a folder of “doodles.” If you think of something in the shower or while doing something else, open up your notation software and jot it down! I say I’m notorious for not finishing projects I start, but at least 25% of the stuff that gets thrown in that folder ends up in its own piece at some point. Sometimes even years later!
Practice. Composing is like playing an instrument: the more and the more often you do it, the better you’ll get. Stop being afraid of not being as good as you want to be and just write. You’ll thank yourself for it one day. ♥
a little holiday gift for you all! maybe listen with some hot chocolate? ♥
Hi, i really liked that past cover you did, is there anyway i could download it? I'd be willing to pay
oh hey thanks!!! i don’t currently upload my music any place other than youtube and tumblr (and since my most recent cover uses samples from the game i’m not allowed to charge for it anyway ^^’) so you’re free to download it! if you’re not sure how to do it xkit has a really nice extension for that, and im sure there are others somewhere if you don’t use xkit.
(just ask before you upload it or use it somewhere else please? i worked very hard on it!)
to those of you asking about the drum part: im like 90% sure this isn’t playable
* The wind is howling...
was complaining to a friend that there were no epic string arrangements of my favorite undertale song when i realized i could fix that myself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
also since tumblr is going around deleting blogs, i’ve got a youtube that mirrors all the audio up here (though unfortunately not the sheets.) anyway if tumblr sinks my battleship i’ll be there.
found the exact intervals of gaster’s theme in there :oo probably an irrelevant discovery, but then again it’s toby fox so who knows???
* (Don’t forget...I’m with you in the dark.)
i thought this would sound nice with cello...plus i was reaaaally surprised that toby didn’t sprinkle in the undertale theme there
HELLO YES I WOULD LIKE TO PLEASE HAVE THE SHEETS FOR FIELD OF HOPES AND DREAMS
that didn’t take long lmao
uhh the score is a grand total of like 20 pages and there’s four parts, so sheets are below the cut!
