C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G SONG
Stupid Sexy Spies
look at amy's splices gais
*Charles attaches a sapper to George's teleporter entrance, the exit beginning to fizzle and spark.*
Turning away from his nest when the familiar crackling sound met his ears, George expected his sight to land on an enemy Spy; instead, his eyes met a seemingly malfunctioning teleporter exit. The thought of the cold having partially frozen its circuits came to mind, but it appeared much more likely that there was a disturbance on the other end. Checking over his shoulder to make sure there weren’t any incoming attackers, the Engineer attempted to dispatch a solution to the problem.
Science Day in India, posting whole series of Scientists, their inventions or discoveries.
Let's get ready to RRRUUUUUMMMBLLLLLE!
[...] It did look like a lot of fun. The only Engineer out of both RED and BLU to jump in was Dell, and he was doing so almost strictly in a supportive role with his dispenser. Normally, Ben would’ve been all for something crazy like this, but he’d had too much to drink today and probably would’ve killed one or more of his own teammates on accident like Hector had.
“All right, let’s take a bet on this one. Leo versus th’ bigger BLU lady Medic. They look t’ be pretty matched, an’ they’re both already bleedin’. What d’y’all think?”
“I think he’s an idiot and there’s a soft spot in his skull.” Jonah straddled a console chair backwards, looking out. ”She doesn’t need half the wind-up he does with that saw of hers…and look — look, there he goes, trying a damn judo flip with a sword in one hand. Goddamn it, Leo.” He paused to seek consolation from his beer. “That Medic knows how to tangle. You don’t…get close to Medics.”
He squinted then. “Hey, our little Scout’s trying to go. You get any sort of read on her yet? Seems cute.”
After taking a ride through spawn due to an eager Heavy's minigun at the very start of the battle, George had headed over to the skybox, not wanting to participate in a seemingly senseless fight. At least it would be a good exercise for those to let off steam that were barely managing to sit on their hands while the BLU base was being reconstructed. Rounding up the stairs, a quick turn of the knob proved it to be locked--someone probably not wanting the fight to come to them. Rapping the back of his knuckles against the door, the Engineer called to the others on the inside; "Hey, it's George, open up, would ya?"

((that's right you guys keep givin charlie a hard time make him work for his food))
They’d reached the end and Charles finally realizes what he’s doing—he’s singing along with an enemy to some soft-hearted song and oh god he can feel his cheeks burning…no, no, no…He abruptly stands, hand covering the lower half of his face. “Désolé, e-excuses-moi.” He quickly mumbles a polite ‘merci for zhe music’ and hastily makes his exit out of the workshop.
Tilting his head to the side when Charles stood up, he blinked as the Spy covers his face, watching the other head towards the door. "Hey, wait! There's some other songs I had in mind that I thought ya might want to hear!" ..but then he was already gone, the shop left silent now. ..Wasn't his face a bit red, too, before he left?
Getting up, he moves to look out down the hallway, not seeing any sign of Charles. Raising a brow, he turns back into the shop, guessing that he probably wouldn't be coming back any time soon after that. Closing the window, George chuckles quietly; he'll have to remember this and mention it again sometime for an even better reaction.
For now, the guitar was set back in the corner, the chairs readjusted. The Engineer had his break, which admittedly was quite more enjoyable then it appeared to be at first. Uncovering the schematics on the desk, he set back into his work for the night.
“Plenty,” George supplied when Charles couldn’t get remember it. Nodding his head to the rhythm of the song now, he couldn’t help but let out a laugh at the thought of their situation. Letting his eyes slip shut, he continued on happily.
“Help yourself to happiness and sprinkle it with mirth~”
Charles was pretty sure this was what it was like to die of embarrassment. Some cruel torture the engineer cooked up for him—except for the fact that he was doing this of his own free will.
“Close your eyes and, um, dream for uh…all you’re worzh…you will feel te-uh, er…iffic when you, uh, uh…get back down to earzh~”
"From a dreamer's holiday~!" He found himself chuckling good naturedly now, eyes opening to land on Charles's face-- whose reaction was the best of all, considering he had just sang the entire song once through with him. "That wasn't so hard now, was it? Now that ya went through it once, how about ya try for a second time around? Ya could probably get some of the lyrics even better now!"
Charles was much too stiff in his actions and thought to be able to add much comment, focusing on trying not to flounder with the words but still failing in spots, but this time he manages to join in with George when he’s supposed to. “Time, zhere is—-uh, of…You need no re-uh, eservation…Just, um, bring along zhe, uh-zhe one you love…”
"Plenty," George supplied when Charles couldn't get remember it. Nodding his head to the rhythm of the song now, he couldn't help but let out a laugh at the thought of their situation. Letting his eyes slip shut, he continued on happily.
"Help yourself to happiness and sprinkle it with mirth~"
His voice is mumbly when he’s supposed to join in with George, not quite expecting to be singing together, let alone singing at all, but he manages to get the words out semi-intelligibly.
When the next verse starts up there’s a bit of volume coming into his voice, determination to show he does indeed care about music showing up more, though he keeps stumbling to try to remember the lyrics. “A-uh-uh, wish, non, a dish of scrambled stars?…Uh, and for munching you’ll be, munch-dammit, uh—candy bars…”
There was an undeniable feeling of appreciation when the Spy seemed to start putting actual effort into the singing-- even if he wasn't getting the words right. Hell, he didn't expect him to, and they were near spot on.
"That's pretty close, and they're rainbow candy bars, Charles. You'll be livin' a la mode on Jupiter and Mars--remember, with me now--on a dreamer's holiday~ Now this ain't so bad, is it? C'mon, let's keep goin'. Make it a long vacation.." Once more he paused, turning the verse over to the Spy.
He fidgets nervously and puts out his cigarette. The request has completely caught him off guard. This is ridiculous; he doesn’t have to do this. He doesn’t have to do any of it—but it’s the challenge to his love of music that does him in. He holds it much too closely to his heart unfortunately, even in this case. “O-of course I am mais I—“ He looks around nervously and the song starts back up and things are happening a bit too fast—George has already sung the first line and he feels stuck.
His voice is soft and very uncertain but definitely not out of key. “L-let your worries, uh-merde-uh move by and do zhe zhings you please…”
He couldn't help but raises his brows when Charles tries to remember some of lyrics, chuckling when he managed to do his part. "There ya go! In the land where dollar bills are fallin' off the trees.. Sing this next part with me-- On a dreamer's holiday~"
Even with Charles's nervousness, George couldn't help but harbor a bit of disbelief; in reality, he was palling around with the enemy, a man whose main job was to make his life hard. And yet.. "Every day for breakfast, what's there to eat?"
Charles let himself relax and listen to the music, images from the lyrics conjuring up in his head, his foot swinging slightly until the song ended. He focuses his gaze back onto George and opens his mouth to compliment the music but closes it again at the other’s expectant look, getting ready to inquire when George answered the question. His thought process nearly halts completely and his mouth stays open for a few more moments before he manages a response. “I—what? You expect moi to—-” He takes in George’s expression again, his own face matching his surprise. “…You’re actually serious.”
"Yes I am," George eagerly replies, his grin stretching at the sight of Charles's shocked expression. "Ya came in here wantin' to listen to some music, all I can imagine is that it'd be even better for ya to be a part of it as well!" Edging a bit closer on his seat, he doesn't let the amused expression drop. "C'mon! Ya said it yourself, you're a fan of music!" He takes a hand, gesturing it towards the door. "And it's not like ya got an entire audience in here to watch ya. C'mon Charles," This was where he paused for a quick moment, changing his tone to match the earlier one he used for the song; admittedly, there was an amused undertone to it, as was obvious by his expression. "Climb aboard a butterfly, and take off in the breeze..." Pausing, he made a quick gesture with his hand, wanting Charles to continue the verse.
Charles did indeed want to smoke at the moment, but the proposal had duel intent: Charles wanted to see how George reacted, knowing that he most likely wouldn’t approve of smoking in his shop. He thanks George for opening the window and lights up, taking a drag and making sure not to blow the smoke right at the other. He makes a bit of a face at the trashcan next to him but doesn’t comment. So, willing to go out of his way to be polite…but he doesn’t quite seem like someone who’s a pushover. At least, not unless the right buttons are pushed. But then again he could be wrong, all the more reason to find out more, he supposes.
His ears perk up at the sound of the guitar. “Ah, non, I am a fan of music mais I’m afraid I’m not terribly familiar wizh many popular American songs. It sounded lovely zhough, I would love to ‘ear zhe rest.”
Musing to himself that he probably wouldn't know any songs that Charles could request then, George obliged, plucking the first few strings before coasting into the tune. Giving the workshop door one last glance, he played out into the song, watching the other curiously when the first few lyrics rolled off his tongue. The next few went by without interruption, continuing until it was played through once, then repeating a second time as he had heard done years ago.
"..From a dreamer's holiday~" Was the stopping point, hand resting silently as he looked expectantly at Charles. "Alright, ya've heard it a couple times, now ya gotta earn that chair." Grinning, he started playing the beginning tune of the song again, "Ya gotta sing it with me now-- and don't try sayin' that ya don't know the lyrics, cause ya just heard 'em twice in a row."
Charles carefully observed all of the other’s actions, watching him fidget before settling back down, his eyebrows furrowed just barely. He looked like he was thinking deeply. Then again, most Engineers did. The Spy makes a light disgruntled noise at the mention of Hector possibly coming inside, frowning and pushing the door a bit more closed with his foot. He stops frowning, however; when George picks up his guitar again.
Charles nods in agreement when George mentions their jobs. “Mmm, I wish all of us ‘ere ‘ad zhat way of zhinking about zhis whole zhing. It would make all of our lives much easier.” The Engineer was open about his ideals, that much was obvious since before he’d even come into the room…but he wondered what else the other was open about.
George was smiling at him, and it took him a moment to realize he’d smiled back. “Of course, merci.” He walks over and takes the chair, sitting it across from the other so they were facing as he sat down and crossed one leg over the other. “Just enough to be intrigued. It’s always interesting to see someone wizh such a scientific or mechanical expertise to be interested in anyzhing like music.” He grabs his cigarette case and flips it open with practiced ease, pausing as he took out one long, white stick. “Do you mind? I much prefer it when talking wizh ozhers.”
Listening as Charles moved the chair to his liking, he found himself thinking how on how often he'd find someone else that knew how to play an instrument before the slight of hand catches his attention. He'd instinctively tensed, relaxing when it was only a cigarette that met his eyes. "Ahh.." The question Charles proposed took a moment of thought-- were he to say no, he'd risk the Spy of an unpleasant trip through the hostile base, along with a visit to the outside; in which, it was at least under twenty degrees out there tonight.. but on the other hand, there was the chance of the cigarette's smell retaining an odor in the shop, which might lead someone to question why it was there. Not that he was doing anything wrong, but..
"Lemme open up a window." Turning to lay the guitar down on the desk, George got up to crack the window open ever so slightly, the cold sending him to close the door of the workshop next. "It might get a bit chilly in here, but I think we can manage. As for an ashtray.." Looking about the shop, he simply grabbed the trash bin, placing it to the side of Charles.
Taking his seat with the guitar rearranged again, he let his fingers strum over a few of the notes from the song. "So ya haven't heard it before, then? It's Perry Como, came out back when I was a kid. Real popular song, or y'know, it was then." He paused for a moment. "Ya haven't heard all of it since ya came in some time while I was playin'-- care to hear it in full?"
He lets himself get lost a little in the song since George doesn’t notice him, making himself comfortable leaning against the wall by the door. When George stops Charles comes back to himself a bit, disappointed at the sudden end. Though he can’t help but smile warmly when he sees George gaping at him slightly. He softly chuckles when George finally speaks to him.
”Terribly sorry, I didn’t want to interrupt your playing, ozherwise I would ‘ave knocked. I was ‘oping to seek a little refuge in a kinder portion of zhe base, and zhe music was quite inviting. I ‘ope you don’t mind zhe company…”
"Uh.." Technically no, he didn't mind the company. The thought rose, though, of what might happen if Hector were to come by now, to find Charles in his shop. What accusations would he immediately make? Frowning lightly, George looked at the Spy for a moment longer before catching on to the first couple of his words. Well.. if some peace was all he wanted, then what would be the wrong in that?
Until he remembered the schematics still laying out in plain sight behind him. Setting the guitar down next to the chair George got up, immediately trying to clean up and cover what he could. "No, no, I don't mind it, lemme just.." Letting his actions finish the sentence, he didn't turn back around to Charles until things were to his liking. "I can't guarantee complete sanctity, cause Hector-- the Pyro that is usually with me during battle-- could come by.. but unless that happens.." Taking a seat in his chair, the guitar was settled back in his lap once more.
"I usually say this to the BLUs that I think will listen, but I think ya already know-- nothin' personal against y'all. I do what I do because it's my job, but I'd rather leave the rivalries for the company bosses themselves.." Lightly patting the bride of his guitar, George swiftly changed the subject, allowing a little bit of a smile to surface on his face. "So, ya said the music was invitin' ya in, huh? Pull up that chair there--" He points a finger at the chair adjacent to him, the one Hector had usually sat in (if he didn't lay on the floor). "And tell me just how much of it ya heard that got ya in here."
[...] The voice though…that sounded like the Engineer he’d ran into a few times off the field. He starts to briefly reflect on their odd and eventful history and comes to the conclusion that while they’d interacted quite a lot for being enemies, he’d never really been able to peg down the Engineer. His attitude outside of work was oddly…curious. Interesting, even. He wonders if he should simply stand and listen or dare to venture inside.
There’s another thought that surfaces that’s related to why he was out and about anyway: it would greatly piss Hector off to see him hanging around his Engineer. A slight smile sliding on his face, he opens the door further, silently, and quietly slips inside.
"Climb aboard a butterfly and take off on the breeze.. Let your worries flutter by, and do the things you please.. in a land where dollar bills are falling off the trees, on a dreamer's holiday--" He had to come to an abrupt stop, hand falling silent once his sight had turned to find someone in the workshop with him. Mouth still hanging open for more lyrics to come pouring out, George blinked twice before closing it, raising a brow.
There didn't appear to be any obvious reason for this man to be in his shop-- quite the opposite of what he was expecting his company to be that would join him tonight. Flickering his eyes to the door, it was still open, although much more than it was originally; how long was the Spy standing there?
"..Charles?" George asks, a bit hesitantly at first, "There a good reason why you're here in the shop?"
