I don’t rock with insecure Giorno personally, I think he would be needy for affection and enjoy affirmation, but I think he’s pretty pleased with himself judging by how he is in the series, and taking after Dio. Megalomaniac tendencies…
See, you're not entirely WRONG, but DIO's actual influence on him is pretty negligible inside VA itself - the way the series is presented, the looming shadow of DIO on Giorno is more like a series of vague in-jokes and nudge-nudges meant for the audience rather than anything that actually affects Giorno's in-series behavior. (see, for example, the 7 page muda). We the AUDIENCE know he's DIO's kid and have certain expectations of him because of it, which tempers a lot of fanon reactions to Giorno, both for good and bad. But I think Jodio is a lot closer to what your average person would expect of a son of DIO - and considerably more amoral/self-centered than Giorno appears to be. Does that make sense? It's early and I'm just waking up, haha. The scale of how needy, emotional, or megalomaniacal Giorno is seems to vary from writer to writer. I've seen takes from 'Giorno is ice-cold and needs nothing and treats everyone like a disposable stepping-stone he'd rather spit on than show any emotions toward' to 'Giorno will cry for an hour and flail around to everyone in sight if he stubs his toe because he is a Traumatized Little Meow-Meow' and all stages in-between in fic, so it really is kind of Your Mileage May Vary and headcanons on that one.
Thanks for the ask! :D
I confess, I've been thinking about this scale for Giorno's character a LOT recently, especially when attempting to tackle a long Giorno-centric fic. I'm kind of fascinated by how malleable Giorno is in the hands of fan writers (pointing to that scale of ICE COLD to woobified meow meow) It's tantalizing because he's complex but his complexity isn't exactly USED to a full extent in canon. I SECOND THE SENTIMENT ABOUT JODIO. Jodio blows my mind because of how much he feels like the final iteration on the 'DIO's kid' character. Anyways, Giorno has really mastered himself, right? He strikes me as coming off the heels of teen glow-up confidence. Popular, secure and charming. Surging with ambition, conviction and a very mature mindset. The anime makes a note about Haruno/Gio and man X having a mutual man-to-man respect for each other. Man X treats him with like an honorable recipient of a gangster life-debt, acknowledging the little guy's fearlessness and repaying him with the kind of protection that would allow such confidence to grow later. That might sound totally absurd given that Haruno/Gio was like, idk how old was he? Five, six? But it's at least how Gio saw it. He had no childhood, so man-to-man trust and respect, as far as he could understand it, helped him grow into that interesting balance of secure and coming from trauma. (The lack of early emotional safety from mom as a baby was the most damaging thing, I reckon, but Man X couldn't really influence that. It was more unseen. But that's another story. Anyways!! Giorno's hero definitely sculpted him from the source clay that Dio and Jona provided and his shitty mom and stepdad all but abandoned. As a side note, I'm partial to a cool-headed, confident, self-mastered Giorno with minimal woobification but I do adore the scale sliding into the middle sometimes where unexpected human backslides and frailties can live.
Yeah I also lean more on the scale of 'he's too mature for his age because he was forced to grow up quickly, but still has a deep innate emotional humanity that he sometimes tries to suppress with varying degrees of success' for my Giorno - 'cold' Giorno leaves me equally cold as well as, I think, is kind of a big overall misread of his character.
As I see him in the manga, it's more that he feels TOO MUCH and ends up shutting down/trying to shut HIMSELF down over it, which leads to him constantly sounding like he's about to have a panic attack (in the anime) and constantly sweating balls (in the manga), lol.
