Welcome to SYOT Verses!

We are a Discord community centred around Hunger Games OCs and SYOTs.

SYOTs (submit your own tribute) are a form of fan-fiction where you send a tribute to be featured in another writer's Hunger Games story. It is typically done by reserving a spot, filling out a form and then waiting excitedly for the fate of your tribute and the other tributes around them in their very own arena! If you're lucky, you might emerge with your character as the victor.

SYOT Verses was created as a space for readers and writers to talk about their own fics, characters and worldbuilding. We're a very active community and host a number of events throughout the year. These include reading events, reviewing events and our biggest annual event, Victor Exchange!

Unto the Labyrinth Chapter 23, “Tour: Part 2: Friends”, is now up!

Maze launched into the beginning of her speech. She thanked the Capitol, before jumping into something about the meaning of loyalty and friendship. Some nonsense she didn't write and didn't mean.

Partway through, she looked up at Willow and Sorb's families. Even from a distance, Maze could tell they held the same neutral, corpselike expressions as their family members above them. Mrs. McCullough's hand had moved to Rowan's shoulder.

Through her heaviness, anger cut through. Why the hell was she wasting her precious time, the only time in her life she'd be seeing and addressing Willow and Sorb's families, repeating some bullshit that she didn't come up with herself? What was the point of that? What was the point of any of this? What was she even doing?

She reached the part of the speech where she'd address Sorb's family directly. She clenched the cards in her hands and then, in a single motion, ripped them clean in half. The cards sheared apart.

It’s no secret that Meadow would rather be anywhere else right now.

With only thirty seconds left on the counter, she briefly considers stepping off the little platform she’s on. Surely, that would entail a quicker death than the one she’s going to find here.

Here, where the canopy of trees above is so dense it may as well be late evening for how dark it is. Here, where the rest of the remaining world is watching her, and the twenty-three others trapped in her situation. Here, where nobody can do anything but die.

She doesn’t step off the plate, though. Instead, she watches the digital timer above the spectacular golden horn as it clicks down to twenty, then fifteen, and then ten.

The largest stream of sunlight visible around here is dancing down, casting the Cornucopia in a decadent spotlight. Sending it shining and glittering in a way that makes her head spin. Its maw is filled with weapons and food and medicine. The sunlight is guiding her gaze toward the gear, to the only lifelines available as far as she can tell.

Meadow misses the sun. She misses the open fields of home. The smell of wheat and sunshine in the air. She wants to be home. Among the barley, among the golden Summer air. Not here, where everything is green and dim and designed to kill her.

Five seconds left on the timer.

Meadow refuses to be lured by the siren’s song of supplies. She’s thirteen; she’s small. She knows full well if she goes anywhere near that gentle golden spotlight and all it’s shining upon that she’s going to die.

Instead, she shuffles her feet around (three),

and stares into the murky shadows that loom behind the dense treeline (two),

and she takes a deep breath (one),

and she runs.

There are only 2 rules when it comes to writing fanfics:

Write whatever you want.

Have fun doing it.

That’s literally it. There is no “show and don’t tell”. There is no “make it realistic”. There is no “fit in with the trends”. And of course, there is no “write as fast as possible to keep up engagement and please others”.

No.

Most fanfiction writers are not professional writers. This isn’t a job, we’re literally writing for shits and giggles. We don’t have a team of editors behind us to make our story perfect. Fanfiction isn’t about creating the most perfect plot with the most perfect prose and the most perfect pacing.

Fanfiction writing is for you first. To make your heart happy. Other people just get the benefit to also enjoy it if they wish.

That’s it.

Write whatever makes you happy, with whatever writing style you want, whenever you want.

Announcement regarding The Town of Anywhere

Hello all! After many years and much thought, I’ve decided to officially discontinue my fic The Town of Anywhere. There were many factors in this decision but the main one is that I’ve outgrown this fic, both as a writer and as a person. I still hold it dear to my heart, and I had a lot of fun writing it, but I have no interest in continuing it further.

I have decided to post two final chapters: what I had written of Chapter 33, and an ending chapter with a detailed summary of how the rest of the fic would have played out and three possible endings to it. You can find them linked below:
