As a Nana apologist and general Junna fan, I very rarely see discussion about their very toxic relationship.
The movie touches on this, at last! And Iām so grateful. Itās a topic I have spoken about at length and itās late and Iām scattered so I really wonāt be able to go into it too much in depth now, but itās wild how romanticized they are considering how unhealthy they are.
Nana has them all kept in loops and with each loop she gets to know each one of the girls better but she is always focused on Junna. The advantage she has here for manipulation is unreal and you cannot tell me as someone who is obsessed with Junna and whose morals are on the āeh!ā side that she would not use what sheās learned to get closer to her. Thinking about it just a little makes it extremely creepy.
The encore manga sets them up very sweetly and you can understand why it is that Nana feels the way she does toward Junna but personally I never saw that same affection reciprocated from Junna.
At best she seems to be someone who accepts that affection because wow, someone as dazzling as Nana has noticed her, and letās be honest, Junna is not the best stage girl despite how she busts her ass.
In the movie Nanaās rancor is on full display and you can see the derision and condescension she feels for Junna. Junna must only act a certain way otherwise sheās not āher Junnaā. The way she cuts off her duel on the train alone! She doesnāt even look at her, she doesnāt feel passionate about it, itās just a simple swipe, like she was just a fly who was in her way.
If sheās too confident itās not her Junna. If sheās not going on the career path and the school she wants her to, sheās not her Junna. She tells her that words are worthlessā she says that to Junna who values words almost above all! She calls her dream nothing but space trash (my god the way I was looking at an invisible camera with all the burns in this scene!), and then she tells her to basically off herself. If she stands up for herself, if she shows strength than Junna is not in character!
Its horrible and glorious! And honestly I love that they show a WlW relationship in this way because you rarely see them but I promise you that they exist.
The show and stage plays donāt dive into this as much. The gacha game which is the shittiest gacha game of all the gamesā actually has pretty great writing. Unfortunately not for Seisho. BUT they do set up some interesting groundwork for Junna and Nana that comes out in the movie.
Thereās the awful swimming event of course in which Nana literally rewrites a script because she doesnāt think Junna can handle what the character demands of her (Junna was not happy). Thereās also the fact that Junna has played Beauty to Nanaās beast. Her Christine to Nanaās Phantom. Not to mention the other characters Junna plays in which she comments on some way that Nana has been obsessed with her. None of these are romantic pairings! They may be viewed that way at the outset but in each instance, like Nana in the anime and movie, she wants to keep Junna as a pet. One that does everything she wants.
