Oops! All Purring Headcanons
Strap in folks this is a long one.
× Omegas' purrs are very rare to those outside of their family/pack. If you're courting an Omega and they purr, you're set, bring out the wedding rings.
× If you're an Omegas' friend and they purr at you, it can be a little confusing, because they either trust you with their life, or they want you to court them. Can cause big misunderstandings, it's best to ask!
× Omegas purr more often when in heat and when they have pups. Their preferred method of comforting a newborn is by purring and rocking them gently. This is usually the stage where most dynamics learn to purr.
× Hugging a nesting Omega while they purr is the coziest cuddle you'll ever get. The comfort, the softness, the vulnerability, and the closeness you feel to that person makes you feel like you've found your soulmate. And often times, you have. Omegas don't get that vulnerable for just anyone.
× If you make an Omega laugh really hard, it's possible for them to start purring in the middle of a laughing fit. They usually do it when they feel cozy and safe, but it's not super uncommon for an omega to purr from pure happiness.
× A Beta's purr is higher pitched and a bit more common, if you're hanging out in a group where a Beta is comfortable in, it's very probable they will start purring. After all, Betas exist for pack bonding.
× A Beta's purr is very unique to them, you could probably tell between one Betas purrs and another's. Not a common characteristic other dynamics have.
× It's possible that a nervous Beta will start purring, especially if it's because of conflict. They will try to calm down the other party before attempting to fight or defend themselves. It usually works.
× An Alpha's purr is more like a deep rumble. Big, warm, and all encompassing, like a weighted blanket cocoon.
× An Alpha's purr is usually too low to notice if they're not comfortable being vulnerable. Once you do notice, they've probably been purring for hours.
× Being in an Alpha's den while they purr to you is one of the greatest joys for an Omega. Feeling protected and safe by a strong mate is a strong instinctual Omegan desire.
× An Alpha's purr to a newborn pup is higher pitched and faster. Normally because they're very excited to be fathers, and wouldn't want to scare their pup with loud noises. They want their baby to love them after all. However once they grow up, they purr the loudest to them, almost like showing off to the world how much they love their child.
× An Alpha's purr is perfect for anxiety/panic attacks. They can drown out other senses, like touch and sound. And sometimes even the loudness in a person's brain. It's very comforting to take a nap in a purring Alpha's arms after such an experience has wrung you out, and usually their instincts to protect will make it impossible for them to deny you comfort.
× An omega purring can cause an alpha to purr and vice versa. A beta purr is less probable to trigger that response, unless the dynamics are comfortable being vulnerable around the beta.
× In a polyamorous relationship or tightly knit pack, purring can get pretty loud, maybe even too loud to relax in the case of multiple Alphas. It's common for a pack/relationship to take turns in such cases.
× Purring at will is kind of like coughing at will, it's pretty easy to do, however it won't sound convincing unless you've had practice. And it's not very common to practice purring. There's easier ways to fake comfort!
× Purring between a Beta and an Omega who are very close is usually seen as really friendly, sometimes even flirty. Purring between an Alpha and Omega is definitely seen as flirty, and is usually quite intimate. Purring between Omegas who are close or good friends is pretty much expected.
