if 2020 me had to guess which book series she had read that year that would still be her favourite series of all time 6 years later, she would've guessed wrong -_-

see i really loved the raven cycle when i first read it, i'd never really read anything like it [still haven't tbh], but six of crows was my beloved, i was so sure it would be a long-standing obsession (like anne of green gables), but then it started to fade 2 years in :( meanwhile trc is always somewhat on my mind.

don't get me wrong, SoC is still great, like its a go to recommendation in the way trc isn't, most people will like it, it's still one of the best YA series and the characters are well-written. but trc is my special little princess :) time IS a god damn slinky and i keep circling [heh] back to the characters and the writing style.

jessamine lovelace.... she's cruel she's mean she's disrespectful but as the story goes on and her backstory and reasoning is revealed more and more she becomes so hard to dislike despite it all because she's not acting out of pettiness or cruelty but rather pure desperation. and that doesn't get better for her it just gets worse until it gets to a point where she's fully deluding herself because she's SO desperate to have the life she's always wanted but can't have that she clings to a tiny tiny sliver of hope and she betrays everyone she knows for it and she's tortured for it and in the end it wasn't even real. it was just adult men taking advantage of a vulnerable child. and afterwards she's forced to go back to live the life she said she'd rather die than have to live except she does just that, die a horrible violent death before she can even reach the front steps of her former home. but even in death she doesn't find the relief she thought she would because she's now a ghost who cannot leave, still forced to live out that life she never wanted, except now it's for all of eternity

I do find the main romantic thread in the Trixie Belden books very compelling. Like obviously the books are not super well written, even aside from being books for tweens, but "guy who is way too into having an unrepayable debt" is a very appealing concept for a romantic interest.

Several weekends of work and a couple of burned fingertips later, my 35 Portland Row bookend is finished. 🥳

Made of mostly styrofoam, cardboard, acrylic paint, and copious amounts of hot glue.

It lights up and is a little higher than the height of an A3 piece of paper.
