A comprehensive list of Fusebox staff members and projects to support instead of Matchmaker~

I started compiling a list of their former staff back in July when the layoffs were announced, but it’s taken me longer to get it out because I wanted to provide ways to support/links to their upcoming projects. 

But then that devolved into me playing their demos, reading their work, and enjoying their indie content in earnest. It actually ended up being a really cool project, because it introduced me to so many new IF adjacent things, some of which I’m still enjoying playing. I highly recommend going down the rabbit hole.

Elizabeth Smyth: twitter | website | her spooky games are free to play, super interesting, and well written as shit. It gives me TMA vibes.

Ben Kaestner-Frenchman: twitter | Just super fun to follow and his WIP novel looks super interesting, I’m not sure if there’s much to do to support it at this point but *eyes emoji*

Ed Sibley: twitter | Ed my beloved /j He’s working with Netspeak games and they’ve released Sunshine Days which I downloaded from a tumblr ad before realizing he was involved lmao. It’s reminiscent of animal crossing/stardew/every mmo from the 2010s and I’m really enjoying it

David Galopim: instagram | He’s working with the app Puzzle Heist now. If you like empire building games like Clash of Clans or Game of Sultans, you’ll love this. The characters do look DOPE af, but the story is a bit lacking and the Match 3/Best Fiends format burnt me out pretty fast. I did play for a couple months, so it’s good enough for that.

Hannah Powell-Smith: twitter |  Buy!!! Their text based game Creme de la creme!! (or download it on the app store, the first three chapters are free) I bought it purely out of reparations for the money I’ve spent on gems for LITG and while I’ve only got through four chapters so far I’m enjoying it. Scratches my dark academia/royalcore itch. They also wrote one called Blood Money  which is about half the length but not really my cup of tea because it’s a mafia AU but maybe you’re into that! It has really good reviews on the app store!

Heidi McDonald: twitter | The best ongoing project I can find, short of just having a job to offer her lmao, is the book chapters she’s written about video game development and a book about sexuality in gaming. If you’re interested in that, check her books out.

Ian Mcdonald: twitter | podcast | He has a huge backlog of work but my fave is the text based game and his podcast. I’ve started listening and am? Enjoying it more than I thought I would? They review a bunch of IF games and it’s been fun to get recs. They’ve got 8 episodes so far, and they’re all about an hour a piece which is *chefs kiss*

Ines Robin: twitter | She’s taking commissions for portraits through DMs, and seems to have a new project in the works

To no one's surprise, turns out fusebox really is quite a shitty company.

This article in the Independent (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/love-island-game-fusebox-app-b1896025.html) finally gives us some insights into what happened to cause the staff to leave en masse earlier this summer, and it's pretty damn bad...

Matchmaker and the restructure really did cause the main rift is seems, although the management sounds like it was already pretty shitty.

"[A matchmaker] storyline caused great distress among a number of Fusebox’s staff, many of whom are part of the LGBT+ community, employees told The Independent. They said they had been told their concerns were taken on board and the storyline would be removed, only for it then to be available on an international version of the game.

An open letter sent 24 May and signed by 31 members of Fusebox staff, warned of “problematic content” on Matchmaker: Puzzles and Stories despite issues being raised with bosses, while they described the decisions of management as “destructive” to their teams and fostering “confusion, worry and fear, and … risk of burnout”."

So yeah, not great, and I very much recommend everyone to read the whole thing. It's the creators that were the ones to give us the game we love(d), and it honestly feels a bit like a wonder that despite a rancid upper management we got a game and consequently fandom that's so fun and lovely – and we can thank the writers and game developers for that.

They deserve our support, while fb can go fuck right off.

Can we talk about Lottie just never respecting other people or their things?

In CMM, she steals and hides Priya's purse for really no apparent reason.

And she's not really remorseful when Priya's upset about it. Not only that, she didn't take it in order to use it for anything or even draw attention to it for the murder role play game.

It kind of just seems like she took it because she could and didn't care how that would affect other people.

If you throw back to season 2, on TWO separate occasions (that I remember, there might be more) we see Lottie taking the other girls cosmetics.

I think on day 6? 7? She takes Priya's lotion without asking and applies it. Not the end of the world, but a couple days later she takes MC's lotion and says 'I'll give it back when I'm done'.

So not only did she give another girl no choice in her using their stuff, but she deprived them of being able to use their own things until she determines they can. And for what reason? She's not going to be applying lotion all day long? Why take it from MC entirely?

And I would argue 'maybe she just comes from a culture/family where sharing is the norm' but it is NOT because she's perturbed by Henrik using her lipstick for the challenge, doesn't offer to lend her lotion when Priya asks, accuses Chelsea of being an eyeliner theif on day 19, and generally never offers her own things when other people need something.

I just... 😬. It's the childish self-centeredness for me.
