It was past midnight and the air in this southern clime was still warm, though a lovely cool breeze blew in from the Mississippi river, merely yards away from the hotel he’d ran into the young star sneaking out from the alleyway entrance. She was stunning, but oh so very eager to feed as she was to follow at his heels like a duckling. Was this what it was like to reverse the roles, to have a fledgling of his own ?

David had gone through many remarkable things these past few years. It’d be a shame not to take advantage of his new abilities to the full extent of his newfound immortality. If she really wanted to see it ... well, by whatever providence drew her into his guidance, it would surely be him who would suffer the consequences in the end. Of that, David was most certain .

The Talamasca - Part I:

The Talamasca, meaning "Animal Mask" from the Latin, are a secret society, set up, as their calling card says, to watch the paranormal in action. The name Talamasca was also an old term to describe a witch or a shaman. The order is known as being so old even its own members can't tell you when and how it originated. Established in Amsterdam, their motherhouses now stretch from London, Rome and New Orleans to other various locations around the globe. Claiming its wealth largely due of the Knight's Templar, its resources and capabilities are nearly infinite. Their basements are filled with records of phenomena. Their records stretch back a millennia, bringing truth to their motto, "We watch, and we are always here."

Welcoming people with paranormal powers to visit them, occasionally they become aware of individuals with particularly strong powers, these people are investigated and offered a place with their group, but are not obliged to accept the position, though almost invariably they will.

Members of the Talamasca however dedicate their lives to the order, specializing in specific areas of the paranormal: witches, vampires, werewolves, & more. They must however never forget the cardinal rule of the Order: watch, but never interfere.

David himself ascended the Talamascan hierarchy quickly, devoting his career to the study of vampires and their origins in particular. In his senior years, he received his final promotion: Superior General, the highest position a devotee can achieve.

As an immortal, he was forced to divide himself from this world forevermore. It's ok, he even acknowledges they thought he was overdue for retirement.

The Body Switch - Part I

I want to touch upon my divergence from the canon storyline containing that of a white Englishman taking over the body of an Indian man. While the intention may not have been to parallel the history of colonialization by AR ( i strongly don't believe that she thought that through when conceiving the plot ), I find the idea of portraying that uncomfortable and not aligned with my vision of the type of character David could be.

My take of this body swap is very much a work in progress, because I want to be as respectful and honor the background of a South Asian identity as much as I'm trying to make an effort for Brazilian identity. That being said, I felt that there was much that could be explored surrounding de-colonization of David's own history with his father -- a man who participated in the colonization of India through disrespecting culture, nature, and society there. The idea that he now occupies and must adopt the skin of someone who, also as a person of color, has experienced the direct effects of oppression on the other side of the world. i'm open to dissecting this in rps of course, too, because why not get psychological with these immortal fools cultural backgrounds and childhoods?

Further more, i want to eventually explore the concept here of being within another person's skin and thus lived experience; do you keep to your own heritage? or do you adopt theirs? much like vampirism in the AR universe, what do we cling to and what do we become?

Hunting Background:

i don't agree with the romanticization of big game hunters as Anne pictured it within the novel. But I will maintain that he was pushed into the culture by his father at a child where he did encounter a tiger at 12-13 years of age as mentioned in his bio. I think it makes sense that he participated in hunting later on in Brazil at a young age because it was extremely common to hunt animals before being banned in 1967 as a trade, and I felt it worth spinning the idea of a triumphant colonial hunter-explorer instead to the horrors of bringing bad habits back home that negatively affected people historically.

Compared to the book iteration of David, I've written instead is that he stopped hunting altogether when he had that spiritual encounter in Brazil with an inspired vision of the indigenous stag-god and a pomba gira of the area.

does this mean i think david became a pacifist in life? no, not at all. he still carried that instinct to hunt well into immortality, but he's trying to be a little more wise about how he goes about doing it now that he's been burned too many times by the supernatural.

there's also like no damn reason he should have jaguar and buffalo heads in his study lol but I will let him keep the tiger skin as his first "gift" by his father as a boy hunting together since it is kind of a pivotal image of his story with Lestat in ToTbT.

Regarding Merrick:

I maintain that David did meet Merrick ~1976-1979 at the behest of Aaron Lightner. However, I don't believe in or want to follow his sexualization of a 14 year old at that time or afterwards. i don't want to write grooming, if at all mentioned, in a positive light.

Any attraction re: Merrick that I follow takes place when she was more than of age in Guatemala(i think she was like almost 25 atp) where he made a very inappropriate mistake as two consenting adults that crossed the boundary of their working relationship at the time and power dynamic (as someone who did know her as child, which skeeved even him out in my hc).

In the present date of the book circa 1999, once David was already immortal I choose to write that he felt he regretted that decision in retrospect. But when Merrick worked her lovespell during the story, he believed he still had a genuine connection with her, that felt more "acceptable" because of his new body's youth but also unacceptable because of his preternatural state.

I personally feel like this makes more sense for an immortal who can't "resist" the pull of forgotten intimacies or a witch's power, but also appropriately adds a strain in their history without personally skeeving me out with ped*philia lol.

If their dynamic or age gap as grown adults makes you uncomfortable you can blacklist any mention of Merrick from my blog should she come up for any reason !

The novel itself is not a very comfortable read due to the dated views on Blood Laws(even if factually, they did not overturn these in Louisiana until 1983), the exotification of Merrick , Voodoo , and Brazilian, Haitian ( + other latin ) cultures. but i'm always down to talk about it and give opinions (trust me i have sticky noted that thing to death)
