Friday’s Fiery Fact 🔥🌶️🔥🌶️🔥🌶️🔥 Chili, Chile or Pepper? 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ "Chili" and "chile" often reference the same pepper but have different spellings based on region. Aztecs created the word "chilli" in reference to the peppers, but the spelling transformed to "chile," as used by Spanish speakers. English users have predominately used "chili," which can also be confused for the flavorful, slow-cooked meat stew. According to the Chile Pepper Institute, "chile" should be used for the plant or pepper, while "chili" should reference the dinnertime favorite. . Peppers/Chilis were first introduced into Europe by Christopher Columbus during his travels in the 15th century. Another confusion concerning chilies dates back to when he discovered the chili plant. Since it was a hot spice, he thought he had found the source of pepper. He christened the plant "pepper" and that misnomer has persisted ever since, particularly in Europe. . Chili peppers aren’t even related to peppercorns. Ground black pepper comes from the Piper nigrum plant, a flowering vine that produces a string of small, round fruit called peppercorns. . The heat from black pepper is not capsaicin, it comes from piperine, a naturally occurring compound named after peppercorns. Capsaicin is unique to chili peppers and is not found in anything else. Both capsaicin and piperine burn the tongue in similar ways, but they hit very differently. If you feel heat immediately after the first bite, and it feels more concentrated in the mouth and on the tongue, its pepper. Capsaicin takes a while to build up, and just as much to wind down. . . . #foodporn #garden #gardening #spicy #salsa #homegrown #pepper #hothothot #chili #chilli #peppers #instagarden #organicgardening #hotsauce #spicyfood #reaper #superhot #habanero #containergardening #hotpeppers #chilipeppers #epicgardening #gvillesatmarket #carolinareaper #feastagram #scotchbonnet #hotones #superhotpeppers #hotstuff (at Bohica Pepper Hut) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPX9cqu7Fg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
