TBH, it's probably a good thing the Gladers were never exposed to modern music because I think hearing Hozier would do an irreparable amount of psychological damage to either half of Newtmas.
If post-TDC Thomas had to hear with his own ears, "Words hung above, but never would form/Like a cry at the final breath that is drawn," he would walk into the fucking ocean.
newtmas listening to “Francesca”???? god save us all
being a free fan whose read all available translations of the supplementary material will subject you to the terrible fate of knowing that rin matsuoka is canonically a closeted gay man but you cant just say that shit because he never looks at the camera and says that hes a closeted gay man so people who need their hands held will brush off the subtext even though the subtext is him being established as a super romantic type of person but simultaneously folding like a fucking lawn chair in every single discussion that has anything at all to do with having a girlfriend
i dont need to dig through all of the translations to give examples this post would be too long if you dont believe me go out on your own quest you dont even need to read the interviews with KA staff the drama cds will do enough
one fact about free! that you only realize by paying close attention to all of the little details is that the final stroke took place in 2009 and this still blows my mind because for the longest time i thought it was like, concurrent with the real world. if haru turned 20 in 2009 he turns 36 this year which is fucking awesome because in real world time hes absolutely married to rin at this point
also knowing this kind of opens a pandoras box of funny as fuck shit for me because rin canonically listens to a lot of english music and english butt rock was in its hayday in the late 2000s so like. do you. do yuo think he listens to nickelback. imgonna fucking throw up laughing
i gag when i think about the line "so that's why haru quit swimming competitively, because he hurt rin". holy fucking shit. like what do you mean haru stopped doing what he loved the most in life because he thought he hurt rin with it? what am i supposed to do with the fact that haru will always choose rin, even over water and swimming? and the fucking depressed look in his eyes, like he shared the same broken heart as rin? literally changed my life. HAUNTS me to this day.
my thoughts about Caine's model lacking many essential facial features (as if he was never intended to show any emotions) and yet him being literally the most expressive character in the circus despite everything.
me being low-key obsessed with the implications episode 7 left us with. Players questioning everything they've been told and Caine being in the center of it all.
Just to be clear, I do believe Caine is written as a sentient AI who is just struggling to understand humanity and everything that comes with it. And I think these thoughts about him faking his emotions are inherently wrong within a story. He's oblivious and desperate but not malicious. But couple it with the fact that he's been lying about many other things (so far I'm inclined to think it was for players' sake in his own eyes) and that humans have been suffering for a while dealing with a literal god that doesn't understand them... Well, I have a feeling that they will doubt his motives and literally everything they know, rightfully so.
The amount of attention this little comic received is a bit terrifying and overwhelming and seeing all the different interesting interpretations people come up with I just wanted to explain mine own a little better <3
I want them all to be healed and happy, little guy absolutely included, but man the situation is rough, and the odds are against us
(Also please ignore typos, I'm hyperaware of them and even messed up writing my on name, i was really, really tired :') )
If Till really dies it would be the biggest wasted potencial in history. I wish I was joking, but Alien Stage's message doesn't work if Till dies. Or at the very least, it would feel really incomplete, and Wiege prove this to me.
Long post (rant) under the cut!
It must be made clear first that the story of Alien Stage has always been presented in pairs. Yes, there are multiple scenes and official art where Mizi, Sua, Ivan and Till are hanging out together as they are from the same anakt generation, but the idea that their bond as friends is the MOST important thing in the story has never really been there, and it's not possible either, since the artbook makes it clear that most of them do not have a very close relationship with each other, not really.
Since the beginning it has been about Mizi and Sua as a duo, Ivan and Till as a duo, and Hyuna with Luka as a duo. Yes, the six of them interact with each other (kind of), but it's very obvious which is their most important bond.
This has allowed us to explore in a very especific way the different (positive and negative) feelings that come with (all different types of) love and hate, and each of the couples can explore it very differently because their circumstances are different from each other, and at the same time, the way the story is presented makes any other combination of characters not as effective, for example, even considering that Ivan and Sua see themselves reflected in each other like a mirror, their ability to affect each other is not strong enough to make them change in any way that matters.
According to an interview with VIVINOS and QMENG shortly after the release of Round 6, "Alien Stage is a story about love", and furthermore, "it is also about how the characters who are alive now grow and how the characters who are dead affect them".
This clears up any doubt about the direction the story is going, doesn't it? If there are three couples who can only fully understand and impact each other, and one of the things to explore is how the dead characters affect the living ones, then it means that one of each couple will die, and the other will be left alive to learn and grow from that loss. Amazing, wonderful, 10/10.
So then... what's the damn point of killing Till?
I've seen people say his death (and, consequently, Ivan's) serve to make Mizi grow as a character because at the end of the day she is the protagonist, but then in that case it seems completely unnecessary to me that Ivantill as a relationship has taken up so much space in the story. If they existed exclusively as a disposable resource to make Mizi suffer more loss, it would have been better to show the relationship she had with them from the beginning, instead of letting us watch their (ivantill) story together and abruptly stopping it halfway through. But instead, we actually don't have any meaningful interaction between Ivan and Mizi, and Till is by far her weakest bond.
And this is where the reason why Till's death prevents the message of "how the characters who are dead affect them" from being delivered in a satisfying way comes in: the writers could never get the most out of Ivan and Till as characters by using Mizi's grief as a medium. Because Mizi could never feel the loss of Ivan and Till in the deepest and most meaningful way possible.
Because she doesn't know them.
Mizi believes in Ivan's artificial facade, she considers him perfect and appreciates his help and patience with her, and is delighted with his Prince Charming persona, so she never questions it and never will, since she doesn't even have the tools to guess what Ivan's true personality and feelings were. (source: alien stage official artbook and anakt garden graduation messages).
The only thing Mizi really knows about Till is that he's talented in music and art. She didn't even have the opportunity to find out his infatuation with her, and for fuck's sake, Mizi is even under the idea that he disliked her, and her relationship with him goes as far as saying "oh man, I wish I could've been his friend!". (source: alien stage official artbook).
She only knows them in a superficial way, so she can only mourn them in a superficial way.
The only one who could tap into all those unresolved feelings is Till. He is the one who knew Ivan best in his most natural and unfiltered form, even if he had trouble understanding him. He is the one who chose to live in a cage even though Ivan once offered him freedom. He is the one who carries these feelings of idolization and cowardly love towards Mizi. He is the one who was forced to face Ivan's before losing him forever.
"How the characters who are dead affect them" and yet Mizi can only mourn them as two friends (and I'm stretching this term quite a bit) who played with her from time to time. Classmates she failed to save. People she knew and continue to lose to a system that treats them like pets and entertainment, which is very valid and I'm not saying her pain doesn't matter, because it does, and it will make HER change (and that's important too), but I am saying the way she can carry the story of Ivan and Till's characters is extremely limited. It feels wasteful.
Leaving their deaths on Mizi's shoulders would only mean Till would lose his individuality in a sense, and in the process bury Ivan's story with him, and all of this would end up being useless.
(plus that one sketch where Till erratically drew Ivan's eye on the Cure music sheet together with a bunch of scratches, but sadly that is paid content).
And yes, I'm saying useless. Because it would make Till the only character among those "condemned by the sacrifice of their other half" (Mizi, Till, Luka) who will be denied the opportunity to grow thanks to that loss. When Till died I thought maybe the story was going somewhere different than I imagined, but after Wiege and seeing the meaning behind Hyuna's sacrifice in her comic I have no doubt that the worst decision in the world would be to remove Till from the picture.
We would literally lose a third of the message of the story.
Now, am I saying Till is alive? Well, I don't necessarily think he's alive, but I do have a fervent wish that he is. Because realistically the wound they gave him is in a fairly mortal place, and during Wiege there was no indication of anything, because they never focused on him directly. It would be safest to assume bro is already stiff and cold.
However, it's also worth noting that, unlike Ivan's case where almost immediately after Round 6 VIVIMENG came out to say explicitly that he was dead, it has been months since Round 7 and we have not had any type of information about Till. VIVIMENG hasn't answered questions about it at events, they haven't referred to Till as dead on patreon, they didn't even give him a comic with his last thoughts, a treatment Sua, Ivan, and even Hyuna already had. So there's that.
No matter what the case is, it doesn't change the fact that getting rid of Till is a bad idea idk.
