Anu Agrawal in and as Khal-Naaikaa, The Villainess (1990).

I am so obsessed with these plain chiffon saris that Anuradha dons while pretending to be the kind and straitlaced governess “Kiran”. Even the way she drapes them is so cool along with the fact that she picks out a different color for every villainous occasion. This film is actually a Bollywood remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) but so unbelievably wild! It’s also one of the few films that starred the amazing and gorgeous Anu Agrawal who is now an icon for me; I love how kitschy and honestly scary her character was. There was this scene in her first film Aashiqui (1991) where she confronts I think her modeling manager for trying to sabotage her boyfriend’s music career by threatening to burn her face with his lighter (right in front of a No Smoking sign!) – “This face is really valuable for you, huh? What if I burn it off?”. And it always stuck with me because the acting in Aashiqui and the characters themselves are really hollow and flat, and boring and the romance itself is very simple technically but this one moment is so terrifying and strange! Anyway, I feel like Khal-Naaikaa (why couldn’t they just spell it as ‘Khalnayika’?) was a place where she was able to expand that moment!
