shoegaze albums as disney princesses pt. 1
...
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine • Sleeping Beauty
- now if princess Aurora was a badass hipster this would definitely be her shoegaze album of choice. not only does the cover match her look but the track list shows scary comparisons to her life as a sixteen year old princess. for example, “When You Sleep” can speak for itself and “Blown A Wish” matches the fairy tale life style perfectly as she finds herself in search of her prince.
Leisure by Blur • Cinderella
- Blur’s earliest album definitely falls into the dreamy shoegaze tone perfect for ms. Cinderella. again, the cover art matches perfectly with this princesses aesthetic. as for the most shoegazy song on the album, “Sing” represents Cinderella’s personality and her perseverance. songs like, “Bad Day” or “Wear Me Down” can be used to show her struggles toward the years of abuse she suffered until she found her prince.
Split by Lush • Snow White
- this album ends with the song “When I Die” fitting for our next princess who is murdered by the evil queen. from the beginning of this story snow white’s true love and prince charming is in search of her. one would say he is on a “Kiss Chase” for Snow White, which is our second song on the album. Lush’s fantasy aesthetic goes perfectly with this fairy tale.

TV’s best soundtracks
Girls
- Lena Dunham’s masterpiece. this show features some of the best indie songs, from St. Vincent to Siouxsie and the Banshees. this show follows the life of four 20-something girls trying to get by in busy New York City. this show will show you the good and bad of adulthood, with the perfect soundtrack to back it up.
Derry Girls
- in a brutal 1990s Ireland, a group of teenagers suffer through the hardships of being of just trying to get by. with two seasons to its’ name, Derry Girls is full of some great britpop jams. the mishaps and confusions of four irish ladies and one english boy is followed by the sounds of the Cranberries, Blur, Primal Scream, Elastica and many more.
My Mad Fat Diary
- a lovely tale of a struggling teenage girl trying to find peace with herself and her life. the show lasted 3 seasons but was jam packed full of brilliant songs and references. this show mentions the best of british music from Oasis to The Smiths and you and i both know, it honestly cannot get any better than that.
Gilmore Girls
- the series starts with the infamous ‘There She Goes’ by the La’s, foreshadowing for a series of great tunes and a reboot with even better bops. from PJ Harvey to Mazzy Star, this show follows the close mother-daughter relationship of Lorelei and Rory Gilmore. the show lasted a whopping 7 seasons full of ups and downs of emotion. as for the music, it remained solely on the up & up.
Girls! Girls! Girls!
In a world full of the same stories about girls being told what they should be wearing, what they should talk about, how they should act or what they should do with their bodies; we can find wormholes to stray from this controlled way of life. How do we do this? The answer is Punk Rock Music. You’ve heard the songs, seen the images, or maybe even watched the videos. Punk rock is scary but it’s powerful. What better way to change the world than to scream from the top of our lungs until it does?
Punk rock dates back to the early 70s with bands like The Ramones, The Stooges, The New York Dolls and The Clash. These bands kicked it all off for this sacred genre. What’s something they all have in common? They are all comprised of men who ruled the face of punk for decades to come. To anyone of the anarchist or rebel mind frame this might cause them to pose the simple yet drawn-out question, “where are the women?”. Well, they were in the exact same spot in the 70s as these men. One could find the first punk females like Patti Smith or Debbie Harry paving the way for young, bright-eyed teenage girls with posters on their walls, doc martens on their feet and a deep passion for music and rebellion in their hearts.
It was not until the early 90s when female punk really made its case. It was called Riot Grrrl. This underground movement was led by the girls who had a bone to pick with the inequality of the music scene, political scene or any wrongdoings of the 1990s. Bands to kick start this manifestation include, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Hole, Sleater-Kinney, and many, many more. The main point of these bands was to address raw and genuine problems like rape, domestic violence, racism, sexism and patriarchy. They focused on female empowerment. These women changed the face of feminism and punk music and showed the world how angry women can have a huge impact on a small platform. These bands continue to inspire and motivate girls to create their own punk manifesto. Today, bands like Dream Wife, Phoebe Bridgers, Chastity Belt or Lily Allen show us that this operation did not come to an end, if anything, it’s just getting started. Until the world realizes that girls are not baby making machines or inferior objects, we shall continue to scream and yell. As Bikini Kill believed, if all girls started bands the world would change. So, by means of cultural resistance, find your inner Patti Smith, Kim Gordon or Miki Berenyi and scream loudly or weep silently to your heart’s content to change the world forever.
iconic 8o’s goth albums
...
Burning from the Inside - Bauhaus
- having bauhaus as the epitome of goth bands, this album might cause a bit of controversy because it’s not the most popular bauhaus record. though, it is the best. the dark guitar riffs and edgy beats give this album a method to it’s madness. bauhaus still remains a titular band of the goth world. don’t consider yourself a life-drained, bloodsucking goth until you’ve listened to Burning from the Inside by Bauhaus.
Disintegration - The Cure
- yeah, Disintegration is more goth than Seventeen Seconds, i said it! the reason why this record is more goth comes from its long lasting songs of sadness and dead ends. yes, Seventeen Seconds has A Forest but this one has Fascination Street, Lullaby and Prayers for Rain; name better goth anthems, i’ll wait.
Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
- the darkness and tired energy this record has plays into the goth persona perfectly. one could battle Joy Division being more New Wave than goth but let’s face it, Ian Cutis was a goth icon and we all know that.
Ocean Rain - Echo & the Bunnymen
- this album brings you down an endless river of goth slappery. nocturnal me? the killing moon? what more could one want? the darkness among the catchy tunes exemplifies the meaning of being goth. plus, who could resist listening to the biggest babe in all of goth music like Ian McCulloch?

lu’s songs for the summer!
hello...sorry for the two week break— i am now back for more mediocre music reviews!
this week has felt so summery so i thought some playlist suggestions would be fitting
- the perfect summer song for parties. this song will make you feel infinite in all the right ways. keep it in your back pocket for when the party starts to die down and you will pick it up like never before.
- the song to channel your inner edginess whilst chilling at the beach. bring this song along in your drink cooler to show your friends that you are different and cool solely because you listen to Pavement. everyone wishes they’re Stephen Malkmus at least a little bit.
- the ultimate summer song. fit for any social gathering or just an upbeat day by the pool. this song will channel nostalgia even if you haven’t heard it before.
do i have bad taste in music ?
something that crossed my mind this week...
for most of my life i’ve dealt with both ends of the spectrum. typically, people with similar tastes as mine have complemented me on my eclectic taste. on the other hand, i’ve been told that my taste in music is in fact, brutal. obviously, every individual thinks they have the best taste in music and those with a similar palette. but i’m wondering, what truly is bad taste? or, is mine as bad as i’ve been told?
from my standpoint, i believe that bad taste means you’re very limited in what you listen to. for example, two individuals both believe that Air Supply is the absolute pinnacle of music and taste. one of the two only listens to air supply and has very little knowledge on other forms of music. while the other person agrees that Air Supply is the Be All and End All of music, they have a strong back catalogue of music to their name. from Air Supply to One Direction, to Kanye West, to David Bowie and so on. because the second individual has more of a variety, they would be considered someone with good taste.
i would definitely be one to judge by the genre one would listen to but after this research, i guess i’ll resort to keeping my mouth shut. to conclude, my music taste does not deem as brutal after all and those who say it have not done their research.
lu’s monthly playlists!
since it’s the first of may i thought it would be appropriate to introduce my monthly playlists. i’ve been keeping on this trend for a whole year now and they truly do not get enough recognition... here’s are my favourites for may!
Teenage Talk - St. Vincent
- first of all, i heard this song the day that it came out and i put it away for a while. i heard the song years later on an episode of Lena Dunham’s show, Girls. kick ass show BTW 10/10. after that, i couldn’t stop listening to it. the beginning synth carried through the song gives it a little R&B vibe which is hard to get enough of. i adore St. Vincent’s sound and emotion, showing why i just can’t get enough. one of my favourite songs ever.
The Fall - Rhye
- Again, another oldie but a goodie. i put this one away for years as well. just recently found it from listening to one of Thom Yourke’s playlists on Sonos Radio. this song has the perfect mix of soft indie and jazz with the melancholy lyrics and groovy piano & bass. this whole album resonates with the listener but this song deemed the center piece of Rhye’s ‘Woman’.
Earth To Jay - Jay Arner
- A very underrated song and super indie artist! with only 1000 monthly listeners on Spotify, this song is the epitome of far-out. the only place i’ve heard of this song was through Clairo’s interview with Narduwar. This song feels to me like the lovechild of Tame Impala and any other deep outer space talking indie band. brilliant tune for the indie kids making video montages of sunsets and skateboarders.
I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes) - Chet Baker
- no, not a classified indie jam. yes, an inspiration to very many indie artists and that to me is a classified indie jam. this song fits perfectly into our month because mr. Chet Baker perfectly displays his broken heart during the season of spring. this song is perfect for a broken heart, a tired soul, a classy old man or any struggling indie artist looking for inspiration.
