THE MUMMY (1999) dir. Stephen Sommers
sitting in the sun. yes it's gonna take all day. sorry.
JESSICA BIEL as Erin in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
"oh —" she murmurs softly, taking in her weathered appearance. her scars. the furrow in her brow. "that's okay, sof," leo's hands lift slowly, her knuckles gently brushing the soft skin of her cheek, ready to catch any tears that promise to break through her will. leaning, leo's lips press to her forehead, a soft gesture of comfort. or an attempt, at least.
when she pulls back, leo's posture softens, slumps to match her height ... her ability to hold eye contact makes up for what sofie lacks, but it generally ends in leo gazing at eyes that can't meet hers.
not like this.
"what do i do?" she asks, her fingers hovering between them. "where do we charge them?" leo knows they're expensive, state of the art, definitely — even with their experimental batteries, leo knows they have to be the best of the best.
"i'm sorry i distracted you," leo offers quickly. "i mean, i was enjoying it ..." a smile graces her face, pulls her cheeks up. with a tilt of her head, she tries to coax a smile from sof, too. "but next time, we can set a reminder ... " i know you hate asking.

guys. i love leo.
she thought it would take some time to adapt to the sudden presence of another person in her space, but it really doesn't feel any different. the thing leo has always cherished the most about sofie is how she can be alone ... with her. no effort to entertain. no performative relaxation.
"hey," she responds, shifting her reading glasses up into her hair as she takes in sofie's appearance. her posture is shrunken, somehow appearing younger. frightened. like she's coming to tell leo there's a monster under her bed. "sof — of course, what's wrong?" scooting toward the edge of the bed, leo's steps are quick.
she fawns over her, always has — moreso now than before, but she enjoys it. not everyone would or could understand their connection, how being the one to care for sofie is a privilege ... seeing her bare ... vulnerable and broken is an honor.
one leo takes seriously.
"what do you need?"
she left, and took the colors with her

"mhm," she hums a confirmation while she watches the way her face shows the cogs turning behind her eyes. "i got a popcorn maker ... i mean, it's totally unnecessary, but when it's dinner most nights —" leo rolls her eyes, but her smile returns. "which means you've got a ton of flavor combos to try ... you ever mix it with milk duds?" watching her expression, leo waits for a hint of recognition. "y'know, those tiny —" her fingers gesture in the air. "chocolate caramels?"
leo's eyes dare to widen, her brows lifting in authentic surprise. a question balances on the tip of her tongue — do you live under a rock? — but politeness reigns. "looks like we've got a movie night coming up, then," she says instead, offering the blonde a grin. "they're fun! we'll have fun. we'll make a whole ... thing of it, popcorn and all. you in?"

every day it gets harder to have a relaxed jaw and decent posture
leo's gaze travels to her prosthetic digits, masked by elegant gloves — the kind her mother wears — knowing they'd be trembling if they could. she wants to reach out and take one, hold sofie's hand in her own, and gently smooth over her knuckles — would it offer a hint of phantom comfort? would it only serve as a reminder of what she lost? regardless of what leo does next, she's certain she'll offer both comfort and stark reminders. it's not lost on her that she's one of the few surviving people to know sofie in many forms ...
mentally, and now physically. they survived the awkward shift from adolescence to adulthood — linked arms through the devastation they've both waded. there aren't many scars on leo's body that sofie hasn't witnessed the birth of. she held her hand through the process of unearthing her family secrets, talked her off the ledge when she learned her older sister was actually her mother.
if she has a bad day, it's sofie's number she dials.
"you never need to call first," she tells her, though she's thankful now that she's home — the thought of sofie showing up to find the house empty makes her want to cry, too. seeing her chin wobble in sheer vulnerability pricks leo's nose, makes it tingle and burn until her eyes beg to join in. what can she say? ' you've still got your health! ' does she? her livelihood is gone, her ... person. while their conversations about love and companionship are few and far between, leo knows. she knows sofie's love life surrounded one person, one woman — coming out was never necessary.
reaching out, leo's finger trails the fabric of her gloves, her lips curled ever so slightly in the corners. her hand doesn't linger, doesn't let the lack of feeling settle in before her hand brushes sofie's hair off her shoulder. "well, i know who you are — and you're staying here until you figure it out for yourself, too. how’s that sound?”
