Dead and dying ash trees at #kenilworthaquaticgardens. The trees are infested with the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle. The D-shaped hole in the bark is indicative of the beetle's presence. The larvae reside under the bark in tunnels called "galleries", and the adults make the hole when they emerge from under the bark. #EAB #emeraldashborer (at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens)

It's nearly unbelievable that something as hateful as a yellowjacket can produce such delicate beauty. Which I promptly smashed both nest and queen mamma yellowjacket. (Last year was a good year: I was only stung five times.)

Flathead catfish, native to the Mississippi River, are now being found in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. These guys can get much larger than the native catfish species. They, along with invasive blue catfish and snakehead, represent a significant threat native fish, crayfish, and snails that love in DC's waters.
