Something is going on at Kingman. There are at least seven large newly bulldozed areas near the meadow. #kingmanisland (at Kingman Island)
Kenilworth was dreary today. #kenilworthaquaticgardens #winterwaterbirds #igdc #DCnature #thisisdc (at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens)
The [path] goes ever onward. Sunday outing with the Greenbelt Biota Natural History club. #greenbeltforestpreserve #oakheath #greenbeltbiota (at North Woods)

Butterflyweed seeds from my garden. #milkweed #asclepiastuberosa #asclepias
Paired plots to examine forest regeneration (tree seedlings, herbaceous plant cover, and shrubs) inside a deer exclosure in Rock Creek Park. The experimental plot (the one inside a fence that excludes deer) is on the right. The unfenced control plot is on the left. Notice any difference? #rockcreekpark #botany #whitetaildeer (at Rock Creek Park)

We're working on making meadows in roadside rights-of-way in the District. First step is to get DPW & DDOT to stop mowing. @doee_dc #DCnature #pollinators
Norway maple on top (bristle-tipped lobes), Sugar maple below. #invasiveplants (at Fort Totten Park)
Sugar maple (left; native) vs Norway maple (right; invasive). (at Fort Totten Park)
Elderberry in flower at #kenilworthaquaticgardens (at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens)
Dead and dying ash trees at #kenilworthaquaticgardens. The trees are infested with the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle. The D-shaped hole in the bark is indicative of the beetle's presence. The larvae reside under the bark in tunnels called "galleries", and the adults make the hole when they emerge from under the bark. #EAB #emeraldashborer (at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens)
Flowering in my yard: partridgeberry, mountain laurel, strawberry bush and spiderwort. #flipagram
It's nearly unbelievable that something as hateful as a yellowjacket can produce such delicate beauty. Which I promptly smashed both nest and queen mamma yellowjacket. (Last year was a good year: I was only stung five times.)
To much #airsoft going on in sensitive habitat in one of DC's Fort Circle Parks. Broken saplings and trampled shrubs are everywhere. #nps #nationalparkservice #nationalpark #nationalcapitalparkseast #igdc #DCnature #thisisDC #exploredmv (at Fort Chaplin Park)
Flathead catfish, native to the Mississippi River, are now being found in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. These guys can get much larger than the native catfish species. They, along with invasive blue catfish and snakehead, represent a significant threat native fish, crayfish, and snails that love in DC's waters. These are on display at the Aquatic Resources Education Center in Anacostia Park. #DDOE #AREC #igdc #DCnature #thisisDC #flatheadcatfish #invasivespecies (at Aquatic Resources Education Center)
