both dean and logan expected something from rory when they told her they loved her for the first time. they expected that love to be returned. jess didn’t. he was just telling her so that she knew — so she could always know it was all real for him. that he loved her and would probably always love her and she was it for him. he didn’t need her to say it back — hell, he didn’t even need her to feel it back. he just needed to tell her — more than that, he needed to say it. she deserved that earnestness, that honesty, that truth. to grow and change, he needed to be vulnerable, and he knew that. that’s why jess’ character arc is so satisfying — he changes when the other two don’t, not really in any significant way like jess does. for jess, loving rory changed him; for the other two, rory’s love changed them.
