"Go to hell" is basic and overused. "I hope the prequel novel narrating your favourite character's backstory retcons his personality, motivations, character arc, and everything you ever loved about him, to the point he is no longer recognisable" is way scarier. It is definitely possible. And it is happening to me right now.
why was sc so insistent on centring the covey around the narrative? making the (seemingly) only musical performers in 12 not from 12, constantly reiterating they don’t belong there and are outsiders. ties to folk music/culture while appalachia has its own roots in folk culture. having a secret graveyard deep in the woods of 12. snow’s ex being a member of the covey, haymitch’s gf being a member, katniss’s dad being a member. being deliberately ambiguous in regards to race (not being from 12 but they live in the seam? lenore dove having green eyes?)

I can somehow tell you have plot armour. There is no reason for me to be telling you any of this. Also, Im sad.
my anti sotr posts are getting a lot of interaction so i feel like saying more idk let a girl rant. i feel like prior to this book i would have said thg is one of the better fandom spaces. but omg this book has made me realise how bad it is.
“but we needed to know how haymitch met wiress and beetee and mags!!” i assumed through mentoring? i didn’t need to know the specifics. i have an imagination.
“but we learnt the revolution didn’t start with katniss!!” that’s literally explicit in the original books. we knew that already.
“but we needed to know why haymitch was a depressed alcoholic!!” oh silly me i thought it was because his mother & brother were murdered and then he had to mentor 26 tributes to their deaths??? idk i didn’t need it explained.
“but we needed to know it was all propaganda!!” i mean.. we are explicitly told there’s a shit load of propaganda in panem? we know some of katniss’s games are edited. haymitch does not have a more unique relationship to propaganda than katniss does in the original, so what was the point? it’s almost as if a character such as… idk… PLUTARCH would have been a more interesting perspective on the topic? or idk Beetee? or Effie even?
All i’ve learnt from this book is that a lot of the people who swear they have “critical thinking skills” actually would fall for actual propaganda bc they’ve completely taking this bad book at face value and calling it a masterpiece because they don’t know how to read between the lines.
I’ve got another hot take about Sunrise on the Reaping.
Lenore Dove is not only a redundant character that strips Haymitch of his own personality and development, but she’s also extremely stupid. Her death is what supposedly drives Haymitch to alcoholism from the way that sotr is written, instead of his memories of the arena, the deaths of his actual family, or being forced to mentor 46 kids to their deaths. His only reason for joining the revolution and trying to take down the capital is because of her, and not his own experiences with the capital and how they’ve drained and broken him, just some promise he never actually made to a dying girl.
Her death itself is what actually makes the least amount of sense and proves that she lacked critical thinking skills. Lenore (presumably since she acts extremely shocked to see Haymitch in the meadow) didn’t know he’d survived or gotten home from the Capital because she spent the entire hunger games in jail, and the peacekeepers probably didn’t let her watch tv. So knowing that the bag of candy she received from Haymitch was at her home, she didn’t even question why there was another random bag of candy on the ground in the forest?
She found the gumdrops before she knew Haymitch was even alive, so there is no was she could assume he’d left them for her when he wasn’t physically there. So why does she not question a random bag in the middle of the woods and instantly picks it up to eat them???
It’s also the worse way Snow could have chosen to kill her. What’s stopping Haymitch from Romeo and Julieting the situation and taking a few gumdrops himself? In fact if we’re to believe that Haymitch is so in love with this girl that he’s obsessed with her 25+ years after her death, you really expect me to believe he wouldn’t kill himself on the spot to be with her?
This entire problem could have been remedied if Snow just had Haymitch’s mom, Sid, and Lenore executed in the town square for as soon as Haymitch gets off the train. Why wouldn’t he send a message to the entire district? Don’t fuck with the games or we will kill your whole family? That’s a missed opportunity to keep everyone in line since everyone saw how Haymitch won the games.
Edit to add: Snow had no way of knowing if Lenore would even find/get the gumdrops. Unless he magically figured out her exact favourite spot in the woods without her being there (again she was locked up for the entire game, even if he was spying on her she’d been in custody), any random person in the district could have picked those gumdrops up and eaten them. We know Burdock goes into the woods, what are the odds that he wouldn’t find them first and eat them?

you weren't "tricked by the Capitol's propaganda" for believing Haymitch's games went the way they did for so many years. the author just rewrote the story she had presented initially in a very weak attempt to portray an example of propaganda, but she sure as hell wasn't thinking about it when she first wrote about Haymitch's games in Catching Fire.
that was the original story. you weren't tricked by any propaganda for believing it. that's the original story the author wrote. what she's doing now is a retcon. which is okay, happens all the time in other franchises. but the way y'all are making it look like it was intentional, like it was a stroke of brilliance from her part is not it. it's just a retcon. a bad one at that, that undermines a lot of the themes and characters and dynamics from the original trilogy, but a retcon all the same.
Can I be so real? I hated SOTR after I finished it. The OG Trilogy was a PHENOMENAL work of fiction. It covered it's bases, it showed us without telling outright, and we had a decent unreliable narrator. TBOSAS was meh, SOTR is a flaming dumpster fire, that goes against so much of the OG trilogy and the characterizations that It makes me upset whenever I think about it. It is the worlds biggest retcon, and it retcons it for the worst.
i told myself i was done griping about sotr, but making burdock be haymitch’s best friend and confirmed covey relation just cheapened so much of haymitch and katniss’s relationship from the hunger games. katniss isn’t some random spirited kid from the seam that haymitch sees himself in. she’s not a girl that he takes one look at and, after decades of losing kids says “maybe this one could be a winner.” he doesn’t call her sweetheart to irritate her, knock her down a bit, because he was once a cocky kid who thought he knew the extent of the capitol’s cruelties, and he needs her to listen to him. he doesn’t try harder to be sober because of these two random kids that come into his life, shake it up and remind him what it is to love.
nope. instead the narrative gives him no choice but to love her. how could he not? she wore pigtails like louella, she knows lenore dove’s songs, she’s got burdock’s blood and maysilee’s pin. he feels guilty for how he handled his friendships after the quell, and now he’s given this perfect moment to atone for it. and imagine you’re a parent, you knew haymitch when he was younger, saw him running around with burdock everdeen. he’s been considered the joke of the district, a horrible mentor, and yet, you see him stepping up as a proper mentor for katniss, his childhood best friend’s kid. it honestly makes him seem like he’s just a shitty person who can’t be bothered to see past his own grief for the sake of saving others some, except for when it comes to the people he used to be friends with. and, as if haymitch’s ability to do anything of his own volition wasn’t taken from him in the entirety of this book, suzanne somehow manages to strip him of his choices in the og trilogy too, and he can no longer choose to love katniss of his own accord.

Me when SOTR defenders say we disliked the book because "we already knew the plot," "it disrupted our headcanons," or "we fell for the propaganda" and not because the book contradicts things Haymitch himself said, the characterization of everyone sucks, and Suzanne Collins spends a lot more time saying shit than actually showing shit:

Like what if someone doesn't think lenore dove is the love of his life because their relationship read as underdeveloped at best and devoid of any substance at worst? What happens then?
as an older sister, my favorite part of sunrise on the reaping was effie being the eldest child who got involved with the hunger games because she was helping her younger sister with homework. very relatable, 10/10, been there before, would do anything for my sisters.
however, also as the older sister, my least favorite part of sunrise on the reaping was how little haymitch seemed to care about his baby brother dying, and it was only the loss of his girlfriend that broke him. not relatable, 0/10, would never be me.

SOTR is so badly written I’m sobbing. Haymitch lost his mother and baby brother but his 16 year old girlfriend haunts him for over 2 decades?? Hello?? Is that not insane?? I already accepted Hayffie wasn’t gonna be canon and am not upset by it. More upset a teenage romance overshadows the death of his family.
