Right, well that’s rather unfortunate isn’t it? Not the bit about the house elves, they’re real sweet— just the bit about there being some kind of stigma associated to whether girls eat a lot or not. It obviously doesn’t carry on to boys, doesn’t seem fair if you ask me.Â
I don't think it's all that fair, either, really. [she shrugs, twirling the pasta] It's just one of those double standards, I guess. A bit ridiculous.
Seems like an odd thing to be self-conscious about, if you ask me. [He shrugged casually, taking a bite of his pasta with the swirl of his fork] It’s natural you know? We need food to survive. Nothing to be ashamed of.Â
Well, clearly we all know that we need it. But for some reason, this stereotype that only guys can eat a lot and girls only can in front of other girls came about. It's like... [she takes another bite of her food, thinking of how she was going to phrase it while she chewed and swallowed] It's like, we lose how lady-like we appear when we eat too much in front of people. So we started watching what we eat and it just became a whole big thing. I don't listen much to it--or I try not to. Everyone knows that the kitchen at school is practically my second dormitory. I've even fallen asleep there once or twice. The house elves just put a blanket on me and left biscuits by my head for when I woke up. Sweet little creatures.
[He smiled, mimicking her movements] Well you never know, it seems to be some kind of trend where girls don’t eat as much as us boys do. I notice it at the table for meals.Â
Girls are embarrassed, sometimes, with how much they eat. [she shrugs, taking a bite of some of the pasta and smiling, careful not to speak with her mouth full] It's a really weird girl thing. We don't want guys to think that we eat a lot, even though most of us can eat just as much as boys can.
[The waitress came back with their butterbeers, an unfamiliar face at her side carrying two large plates of pasta— Remus thanked them both as their food was set before them] I did say that I hoped you were hungry, right? Â
[she thanked them as they walked off, looking down at her food and chuckling a bit] You're lucky that I saved plenty of room for food, then. [she unravels her utensils from her napkin, neatly laying the napkin over her lap before taking a bite of the pasta]
To be quite honest, I was terrified that Valentine’s Day was rather the dead giveaway.Â
Well, not many people would fill someone's dormitory with roses for Valentine's Day if they didn't have the teensiest bit of feelings for them, so it may have been. It was a very lovely giveaway, though.
Oh, that. That I get. Thus why I am always bowing my head, or biting my lip. Sometimes, I get nervous that I will say something that will send you running for the hills. I wanted to ask you out sooner you know, but I did not wish to be too forward. I’m not, well.. I am not one of those guys.
No--I completely get it! I wanted you to ask me out for a while. AÂ while. But I'm definitely not forward enough to ask you to go out on a date with me and I don't think I really tried to make it too obvious that I liked you all that much because I didn't know if you liked me and I didn't want to seem weird to you or anything.
[Frowning slightly, he tilts his head to the side] I make you nervous?Â
Good nervous! Like, the I-don't-want-to-embarrass-myself-but-I-just-sort-of-ramble-on-anyway type of nervous. The kind that just kind of comes with liking someone, I guess.
Well I didn’t think that you happened to not like me, but I assumed you merely saw me as a friend.Â
Well, I mean...I do like you as a friend...but I also happen to like you more than a friend is supposed to like another friend and that makes me really nervous around you sometimes. [she can feel her face becoming redder by the moment and she tries to nod to reassure herself and attempt to make herself feel less nervous]
[He sighs with relief]Â This is going far better then I thought it was going to.Â
[she can't help but laugh, looking up and tilting her head] Did you not think I liked you?
[As he realizes what he has said, a blush floods his cheeks to math hers— biting down on his lip he nods] How can I not? You’re beautiful, you’re funny, you have the biggest heart out of all of us— you’re Mary MacDonald.Â
[she looks down, twisting her hands on the table as she loses the battle with keeping the grin off of her face] I like you, too.
I don’t talk to girls very well, besides you— obviously. Normally I am a stammering mess, not very smooth. Though if you recall I was like that with you at first as well. I guess I just like you, more then I happen to be afraid of saying something idiotic.Â
[she blushes a bit, pressing her lips together hard to avoid the urge to smile again]Â You like me...?
[going into overdrive as she tried to make all of her friends feel better--Marlene after losing her dad and James after having felt out of it and who knew what Sirius and Lily were going through because they hadn't spoken to her in ages--Mary had been living in the kitchen all day, practically, so that she could bake for them--other than when she had classes. looking over the text for her final exam in History of Magic coming up next week, Mary sipped on her tea, scones cooking in the oven]
"I’m sure she appreciates it, she’s not… she won’t talk about it that much, do like everything is okay… he was like a dad, I can’t believe…" he sighed, "Gran is old and… has some kind of virus, but at her age…" he trailed off.
"She doesn't want to talk to anyone, I don't think. I don't blame her, really. I can't imagine going through that..." She pressed her lips together into a thin line, thinking. "I'm sorry, James. I really, really am."
"Well someone erased part of my month, and then Marlene’s dad…" he swallowed still having a hard time saying it, "he died, and Gran is sick… So I don’t feel the usual James,"
She frowned, looking down at the grass. "I know he has...I've been trying to help her with it the best I can. What's wrong with your gran?"
"He did? I suppose so, just feeling a little… off." he shrugged.
"Off like how?" she asked.
Wait really? But you’re… I mean you are easily one of the prettiest girls at Hogwarts. You’re such a warm person… surely someone besides me has asked you out.Â
Well, what about you? You're handsome and sweet and...incredibly smart. I'm sure girls have been falling at your feet to get you to ask them out.
James turns to look at Mary, and shows her the tittle of the book, “My grandmother recommended it,” he explained.
She furrowed her eyebrows at him. "I see..." Mary hesitated before adding on, "Look, Remus told me that you've been a little out of it lately. Is everything okay?"
