THEY STILL NOT LIKE US🏆🏆
This month marks one year since Taylor’s greatest dream came true, and her first six albums came home. Which one are you streaming this Swift Day? 💚💛💜♥️🩵🖤
When I was in high school we did an english unit on Octavia Butler and the teacher told us hey btw. You should call her "Butler" in your essays. Sometimes students call female writers by their first names unconsciously, but that's not acceptable. If you wouldnt call them William or Ernest you shouldn't call her Octavia.
And I was like cool whatever I was gonna call her Butler anyways. But that moment has stuck with me for my whole life because once you start seeing ppl calling women by their first names where men would be called by their last names you literally never stop seeing it.
also a lot of land features and places named after women are their first names, while those named after men are their last names. Virginia. Adelaide. Charlotte. Augusta. Victoria. Ann Arbor. Winona. One of the only English-language exceptions I know is Dare County, North Carolina, named for the first English child born in North America (Virginia Dare)
when Amherst, Massachusetts was considering changing its name to sever ties to the history of Lord Jeffery Amherst, one of the originators of the Smallpox Blanket tactic used against Native Americans, they thought of their most famous daughter, the poet Emily Dickinson
but they didn't want to name the town Dickinson
they wanted to name it Emily
(multiple men have proposed this, actively saying that Dickinson either sounds too formal or doesn't make it clear enough that the namesake is a woman. this feels like ignoring the long, patronizing history of addressing women by first names primarily, IMO)

“You’re going to get us into even more trouble if you keep eating those,” Annabeth continued to grumble as she reached for a few more strawberries. Tossing them into the basket in front of her, she silently admitted to herself that the punishment wasn’t all that bad. She was actually enjoying herself, but she wasn’t about to give Percy that satisfaction. He was the reason they were stuck with this chore, after all.
“Who’s gonna know?” Annabeth heard him say. She shook her head and scooted forward. He went on, not taking her cue, “Besides, you’re not fooling me.”
She turned to give him a look, but paused. He had a strawberry between his teeth and was leaning toward her. His next words were hindered by the fruit, but she could make them out, “You know you want some.”
a couple things. first, i’m not sure where this came from. second, i think you guys should give this song a listen. it came on as i drew, and i think the first verse sounds like these two.

Astronaut Don Pettit took this photo from space in January 2025, as the Sun began to rise over a cloudy Pacific Ocean. This long-exposure image shows off the wide band of the Milky Way, our home galaxy, above the aurora and airglow that shine closer to Earth's horizon.
Astronaut Don Pettit has been to space four times: most recently, he spent 220 days on the International Space Station, returning to Earth in April 2025. Pettit grew space plants, printed 3D metal parts, and studied human health during his time in orbit. When he wasn't working on more formal studies, though, he found plenty of time for what he calls the "science of opportunity:" exploring and experimenting with his surroundings through a combination of science and art.
Pettit shares his experience with the art side of his time in space on our astrophotography episode of “Houston, We Have a Podcast” alongside astronaut Matt Dominick. Give it a listen here or on your favorite podcast app.
