How to Enchant Items

To enchant an item is to infuse it with magickal energy. This energy can come from a variety of sources, including planets, crystals, herbs, or even yourself. 

Some individuals use the words “enchant” and “charm” synonymously as a way to describe the process of infusing something with energy, but for the sake of this post and due to my own beliefs, you enchant something and it then becomes a charm. Alternately, a charm can be something with its own innate energy, like a crystal or herbal amulet. 

The process of enchanting is extremely versatile and there are many ways to do it successfully, so long as you keep your intent clear in your mind. My personal preference when it comes to enchanting items is to allow 12-24 hours (overnight or a full day) for the item to be infused with energy and become a charm - although, this is completely left up to the individual spell-caster. 

Here are a few ideas on how to enchant items, in no particular order:

Surround the item with crystals of corresponding intent

Surround the item with herbs of corresponding intent 

Place the item in a jar filled with herbs that represent your intent

Place the item in front of a candle and meditate on your intent 

Anoint the item with an oil, charged water, or crystal elixir of corresponding intent 

Hold the item in your hand(s) and visualize it filling with the appropriate energy 

Hold the item in your hand(s) and speak your intent aloud

Craft a sigil or symbol to keep near the item in an envelope or sachet

Sew, stitch, or carve a sigil into the item (thanks @stormbornwitch !) 

Write your intention on paper and keep in an envelope with the item 

Pair the item with a corresponding runestone or tarot / oracle card in an envelope 

Take the item and put it in a box with other items that represent your intent such as crystals, herbs, talismans, amulets, etc. 

Bury the item in soil with herbs and/or crystals that match your intent (please don’t put salt on your lawn though, unless you want dead grass)

Pass the item through incense smoke that matches your intent

Stag's Healing Sea Jar Spell

so i wrote this for week 3 of the grimoire challenge!! it’s rough but i like how it turned out so i thought i’d post it. it’s a sea witch-themed healing spell thing. here goes:

MATERIALS: -sprig of rosemary -blue candle -a couple drops of your blood (optional) -sand -salt water, or natural sea water -jar or bottle -twine/yarn

~The Spell:~

Place all your tools on a flat surface. Light your blue candle. Focus into the flame. Visualize the loving Ocean– the healing breeze, the gentle waves, the soft sand, the warm sun.

Take your sprig of rosemary and begin to brush it lightly around the area of your body that needs healing. Chant a healing invocation of some sort here if you wish.

Feel the rosemary drawing the pain from your body and filling the air with a strong, pleasant, healing smell. Wave it over and over. You should start to feel or see the pain/ailment subsiding just the tiniest bit as the herb does its work. Do this until you feel ready to move on.

If you are using blood, drop a couple drops into the jar/bottle now. If you’re not comfortable with this step, try writing/drawing your ailment on a slip of paper with your name on the back and dropping this into the jar. Maybe add a bit of your hair or fingernails.

Now, put your sand on top of it in the jar. Say: “Warm sands, old as time, take away this little ailment of mine.” Visualize the sand burying your ailment.

Next, pour in some sea water, filling the jar maybe a little more than halfway. Say: “Healing Sea, giver of souls, wash away this ailment from its hold.” Visualize the sea washing your body clean of illness or injury.

Blow gently over the jar, mimicking the sea breeze. Say: “Fairest breeze, healer of hearts, heal for me all my aching parts.” Visualize the wind blowing your health problems away from your body and carrying them down the shore.

Hold the blue candle above the jar. Feel the flame’s warmth. Say: “Fire of the Sun, life-giving heat, with your help, this ailment we will beat.” Visualize the warmth soaking into your skin, the light frightening your illness or injury away.

Seal up the jar tightly. Shake it gently to mix the contents a little. Allow them to settle. Then, take some twine or yarn and wrap the neck of the jar/bottle. Tie the sprig of rosemary around it as a little added garnish.

Blow out your candle. Thank the energies of the ocean for their help. Set the jar out on a shelf or somewhere safe but still openly able to spread healing energy in your room.

It is done. Re-charge as needed.

The Importance of Iron in Witchcraft

So, I got a lot of really positive feedback about my post about salt in witchcraft, so here’s another one just for you about iron!

Iron, like salt, has been used for many thousands of years as a potent tool in the practices of witchcraft. Iron is one of the most abundant metals in our planet, and is also a really great metal for making into tools. It’s tough, hard, ductile and with a high melting point that makes it ideal for situations in which you might need a tool to work under extremely hot conditions. It’s also one of only three ferromagnetic metals (along with nickel and cobalt), making it an essential part of most magnets and compasses.

In astrophysics, iron is extremely important in the life cycle of stars. Iron is one of the most atomically stable substances in the universe, and it’s also unique because it’s the first element in the periodic table to require more energy to MAKE it than it gives out from atomic fusion. This is important, because when a star gets older and fuses hydrogen to make helium, helium to make beryllium and all the rest, once it starts fusing atoms to make iron, the star begins to die. So, iron is an element that signals the death of stars, and any element that weighs MORE than iron (atomically speaking) can only be made in supernovas - that is, the explosion that takes place when a really BIG star dies.

In biology, iron is one of the most important elements in mammalian, reptilian and avian blood, because it’s the element that we use in the chemical haemoglobin. This is the chemical in our blood cells that binds to oxygen and keeps us alive. Crustaceans like lobsters don’t use iron - they use copper, and instead make haemocyanin, which makes their blood blue! However, just like in stars, iron can mean death for humans as well. If we overdose on iron, we suffer from iron heavy metal poisoning; when we get crushed by a heavy object we can suffer a disease called traumatic rhabdomyolysis or Crush Syndrome, caused by vast amounts of myoglobin (another iron-based compound, found in muscles, which gives them extra oxygen to use) entering our kidneys and killing them, and as a result killing us.

Iron in science is an element of life, death, and of many points in between. But what about its uses in witchcraft?

Witchy Facts about Iron!

Iron is stable. Iron’s stability, both atomically and magickally, makes it a fantastic magickal conductor, and also means that magick doesn’t seem to affect iron very much. Enchantments on iron are never as strong as on other metals, and even the best witches will have difficulty making an enchantment or other spell anchor properly. However, this has the advantage that iron doesn’t pick up negative magick from background sources, and it’s extremely unlikely that there will be issues with ritual or altar tools made from iron. Keeping your magickal supplies inside an iron or steel box, or a box that’s been nailed together with iron nails, will prevent them from leaking out and attracting spirits that might cause harm.

Iron is protective. Along with silver and a few other little bits and bobs, negative spirits and fae folk cannot touch iron lest it burn them and cause them pain. Additionally, negative magicks targetted at someone wearing an iron pendant will be attracted into the pendant and then dispelled. This makes it an ideal protective charm for everyday carry or everyday wear. This is why horseshoes are considered lucky - back in Medieval times, when protection against negative spirits and magick was much more widely practiced, poor families would often be unable to afford much iron. However, a horseshoe is made of iron, and comes with holes already cast into it, which allow you to nail one over your door easily, which keeps out harmful spirits, magick, and fae, who might seek to hurt you or your family.

Iron is inconspicuous. Anyone can carry an iron nail after all, and a little piece of iron wrought and twisted into a small pendant is far from a traditional witch’s item. Those secret witches who perhaps do not live with accepting families or within an accepting community or country can find great solace in the use of iron as a protective charm.

Iron is cheap. Iron nails, iron rods and iron knifes are pretty easy to get hold of and relatively quite cheap. They’re versatile and not especially likely to draw attention to you - after all, nobody’s likely to question why someone has a couple of iron nails twisted into a pendant, and if they do question it, why it’s just an artistic display! And of course, easy to replace with $5 worth of string, iron and a hammer.

Iron is ancient. Iron is one of the oldest protective charms out there, right up with salt and sage. It’s been used for literally thousands of years to protect people against everything from wolves to armies to poltergeists. That’s a pretty impressive history!

Iron is practical! The best cookware I’ve ever used has always been my cast iron cookware set, which makes better food than I’ve ever tasted, and it’s very easy to clean. It’s also extremely hardwearing - I wholly expect to one day be able to pass on my cast iron frying pan and wok to my grandchildren, and it was already been owned by my mother and father before me. Iron knifes are sharper and cut cleaner than almost anything except obsidian, and high-carbon steel (an alloy of iron and carbon) is the best cutting edge known in bushcrafting circles, where all the best knives are made from it

You Have No Power Over Me

A spell to stand up for yourself and become a confident badass witch.

Requires:

medium sized bowl filled with water (snow water or tap water)

red candle

dried thyme

vanilla extract

cinnamon

an item you wear everyday (jewelry, body spray/perfume, lip chap, etc)

Steps:

Burn the candle so you have enough wax to pour.

In the bowl of water, set your item in. If it is something that can not be set in water, then place it in a jar inside the water.

Drip the wax into the water and add the thyme, vanilla and cinnamon in as well.

Using your finger, stir the water around the item/jar clockwise while saying “you have no power over me”. Focus your energy on to the item and stir as many times as needed.

Wear the item everyday and repeat the spell every couple of months or when you feel the need too.

War Water

War water is used for:

To gain protection. This is an extremely aggressive, forceful spiritual cleanser.

To reverse a curse and send it back to where it came from.

To place a curse. War water is a traditional and allegedly potent weapon during psychic warfare and witch wars.

War water can be used in:

Warding

Floor washes

To splash on a door step or other target

It can also be added to or used in spell work for protection, cleansing, reversal spells, hex work, and more (great for spell bottles and jars)

Standard Protective War Water

Place iron nails in a mason jar. Cut iron nails are recommended because they rust very easily, but any iron nails may be used. Add enough water to cover the nails. Leave this undisturbed until rust begins to form, typically within seven to ten days. The jar should be kept closed most of the time, but opened periodically to encourage oxidation.

Once the rusting process begins, more water may be added. Keep the jar in a refrigerator or some other cool area. Strain the water as needed, rusted nails can be saved for later use.

You may continue adding water to the original nails virtually indefinitely. However, should mold or bacteria ever form, discard everything, including the jar, and start again from scratch.

Standard Malevolent War Water

Collect water from a fierce thunderstorm. Add rusty nails, sulfur and some of your own urine. Store this in a cold, dry place until you need it. This version is used to either place or reverse a curse/hex. The rusted nails from the Protective Formula may be used to create this version.

Notes: War water is not intended for consumption, rusted nails should be handled with care. These are simple standard recipes, they can be personalized and adapted as necessary to give the water more kick.

                                  SATCHET TO ATTRACT MONEY

basil, chamomile, mint and sage (i used only mint and sage cuz im out of basil and chamomile :c )

a piece of paper 

green writing utensils 

a small rock

Place the herbs and sage in the satchet.

Write the persons name on a piece of paper and their birth date to whom you wish money to come. If you have a picture of them or their hair add that too to boost the spell.

Drop some green wax in the middle of the paper and stick the coin to it. Drop some more wax on top of the coin and add cinnamon to the wax. Drop some more wax and wrap the piece of paper around the coin. Drop wax all around the piece of paper and get a string to tie it around the paper.

Tie 3 knots around the piece of paper while chanting:  “With the knot of one, the spells begun With the knot of two, let money come through With the knot of three, let it be!” Once you’ve tied it drop some more wax on the string to seal the spell.

Draw the FEHU rune on a rock using a green nailpolish and add that to the satchet.

Place the satchet above or around tarot cards that attract money. I placed it on Ace of Cups, personally. I felt that cards energies was needed the most with this spell. You can even form a circle of cards and put the satchet in the middle of it, or whatever,  you get where I’m going.
