Scanned from the The Jaguar, the 1973 yearbook of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This is an intense publication. Sadly it is too large for the scanner bed - otherwise I would make a PDF of the entire thing. Southern U. is an African American University. From what I can determine, in 1973, two students, Denver Smith and Leonard Brown, were shot to death by authorities during a demonstration that seems to have happened on campus. This yearbook includes multiple photos and graphics memorializing the students, including a two page spread that shows their bodies on the ground. The book is filled with jarring red and green graphics like this example, as well as multiple photos revealing the apparent struggle many students were involved in against their institution. It is remarkable to see a yearbook filled with so many revolutionary messages and such strong graphics for every section introduction. Even the football helmet before the sports section sits in a puddle of blood and is marked with the word: “Confrontation.” I will surely scan more pages and images from this book in the future.
