A kiss for dear Elena

     her chest aches, a underlying current that ebbs and flows the longer she looks at him, the more she thinks of how their paths are diverging. she smooths her hands over his shoulder before they settle, and finds it’s easier to look at them for a moment than it is him. it feels too much like a goodbye, which it is, letting their ties slip away as they wade into uncharted waters in opposite directions. if she’s entirely honest with herself, which perhaps she hasn’t been from the get-go, let herself get caught up in fantasies instead of the reality she’d have to face in the future, they were coming to this point anyhow. but that’s something she can’t say, a thought she can’t voice for how coarse it is, how far this got, how much stock was put into it.

     it wasn’t a passing fancy, she knows that much, could have had more of a future if a few more sacrifices were made or more lengthy, in-depth conversations had. but the two of them lead very different lives whose paths have merged on occasion, and she can’t ask him to alter his for her, can’t demand either one of them turn back on everything they’re both struggled or worked for.

     she leans, and it’s by sheer grace that he isn’t standing to his full height and elena can rest her forehead against his. her gaze drops to the bridge of his nose, follows its slope as she closes her eyes, his breath against the cupid’s bow of her lip. her brow furrows against his as she draws her lower lip between her teeth, hands moving to the sides of his face. her fingers card through the hair still matted down from sleep before she closes the space between them.

     ‘ be careful, okay? ’ it’s barely a whisper, slipped between her teeth and left to curl against his lip. ‘ or at least try? i’ll––––––i’ll see you. ’
