Trump's call to limit refugee admissions has been denounced by human-rights groups, who say vulnerable people seeking to flee religious or political persecution would be denied safe haven. Although Trump has pulled back from statements early in his presidential campaign that he would ban immigration by Muslims, his critics say his policies embrace anti-Muslim sentiment and would erode America's standing around the world.

On Manus Island and Nauru

Kehazaei, 24, had originally presented with a small infection in his leg that developed into sepsis and eventually caused a series of heart attacks.

The Queensland state coroner has heard that the Manus Island medical facilities were inadequate, doctors’ clinical instructions were ignored and critical medical equipment was not working. Requests to urgently transfer Kehazaei from the island were ignored, then refused, before he was finally flown in an air ambulance, first to Port Moresby and then to Brisbane.

Several other asylum seekers and refugees have died in immigration detention or on detention islands. Reza Barati was murdered by guards inside the Manus detention centre in 2014, and in 2016, Omid Masoumali died after dousing himself in lighter fluid and setting himself alight on Nauru, in protest at being held indefinitely on the island.

Other refugees suffering serious medical complaints – including pregnant woman facing complex births, or suspected cancerous growths – have been denied medical transfers from detention islands.

A racist diatribe featuring the stock-standard paranoid and resentful script of advocates of fortress Australia, Hanson presented her latest racial avatar – the Muslim.

Australia’s values of civility and tolerance are being tested by anti-Muslim rhetoric in parliament – and society’s response will be crucial

Those sympathetic to populist political rhetoric about race, immigration and Islam are, of course, entitled to their view. But they are not entitled to engage in vilification or discrimination. They are not entitled to be coddled or be protected from criticism.

Everyone has a right to free speech and to call out prejudice, racism and bigotry. If people don’t want to be called racist or bigoted, they can begin by not doing things that involve racism or bigotry.

And as part of listening to community concerns about issues, it’s also worth listening to those who experience racism or bigotry.
