A Fox and Tiger Caturday

The tale of the Fox and the Tiger most likely comes from China. The story goes that Fox and Tiger are uneasy friends. Fox knows that at any time Tiger could be hungry enough to turn him in to a meal. One day Fox is shaken by the hungry look in Tiger’s eyes, but he steadies his nerves and tells Tiger that it would not be a good idea to try to eat him. Fox says that he is the most fearsome animal in the jungle. Tiger laughs at this absurd statement. How can something so small be so feared. Fox says that he will prove his assertion and leads tiger through the jungle. As they meet the other jungle residents they all run when they see Fox and Tiger. Tiger is convinced that it is Fox they are running from and concedes that Fox is truly the most fearsome animal in the Jungle, and high-tails it away himself.

These images are from Red Fox & and the Hungry Tiger, told by Paul Anderson and Illustrated by Robert Kraus, who was born in Milwaukee in 1925. The book, from our Historical Curriculum Collectoin, was published in 1962 by Young Scott Books in New York.
