The ‘Moons of Seiros FE:3H Calendar’ is finally up for grabs!
Keep your head in the game with a detailed 2020 calendar featuring your favorites from the FE:3H franchise.
Will you be leaving tumblr when the porn ban hits on December 17th, and if so where will you go?
Our zine blog will still up (unless it gets taken down) since we don’t plan on posting any porn. The zine will be SFW with some suggestive piece but nothing like explicit.
If the blog does get deleted, our twitter is here; https://twitter.com/bowsettezine
Same anon here who had 2 questions, thank you for answering them! And yes, the portfolio question was talking about including previous zine work in our portfolio.
Hi there! Is there any possibility that you might consider leaving the applications open to be edited until the deadline? For example, I was hoping to switch out one of the portfolio examples in my application with another piece, if that's alright. If not, that's fine too!
So 2 questions! Are you guys more keen on digital rather than traditional? Are you also cool with us putting stuff in from zines that are currently in preorders?
1) Digital or traditional does not matter HOWEVER if you are submitting any traditional drawings, make sure at least 2 of them are SCANNED IN and NOT pictures taken of the art with your phone. This is because when the zine gets printed, all art must be at 300dpi and high resolution and phone pictures will never do your art as much justice when printed as a good scan will
2) Are you referring to pictures for your portfolio? If so, then yes that’s totally ok! Anything to show off your latest and greatest work will benefit you. If you mean are you allowed to submit a piece for this zine that was in a previous zine then no. We are looking for original/new artwork for this zine.
Do you start reviewing every applicant after accepting applications are closed or you start reviewing as soon as you get a new applicant?
Since we use a rating process, if time allows we may sit down a few times during the open application period and rate people just so it does not overwhelm us later.
It also means we can send out acceptance/rejection emails faster (one apps are closed and everyone has been fairly reviewed of course)
I know what is a zine but i dont know how it works, but are you going to pay us when you would accept our entry? Cuz I am willing to do it for free, and is it okay if i would do a piranha plant?
Hey! So payout happens after the zine’s preorders close and orders are fulfilled! This is because the profits from selling the zines is what is paid out to the artists so the better it sells, the more the artists make!
What is your acceptance process? I've been rejected by so many zines assuming that I'm not popular enough to be accepted into a single one and I hope that you choose lesser known artists as well
I’m sorry to hear that! If you apply to this zine, I wish you the best of luck!!
Sorry, my reply ended up going a little longer than I wanted but the tl;dr is we select artists based on skill and not popularity :)
I can’t speak for all zines but we, at the very least, do not care about popularity. We try to take a neutral and non bias look at each applicant. This is why we say we like imgur links or google drives since we cannot gauge how popular an artist is (there’are no notes/retweets or public follower count).
How we select artists is strictly based on talent; this comes down to anatomy, rendering/colouring and overall composition. Some applications we get show just sketches and even if the sketches are nice, we are looking for finished pieces in the zine so we often reject people who do not show a complete piece or pieces with just white backgrounds for example.
VS
However, a lot of talented artists are popular for a reason and though we do not intend to only select popular artists, it may seem that way since they tend to be great artists and we want to ensure a quality product for any future customers! But of course, the opposite can be true too. Some artists who are wildly popular just aren’t as good as some who have less 200 followers. So again, this is why we want to select people who are good and not necessarily popular.
Just for further transparency on our selection process, I’ll break down exactly how we will be selecting participants for this zine. When someone applies, their answers are recorded into a google spreadsheet. Here’s kinda what it looks like
At the end of the sheet, the mods will independently look at the portfolio and give the person a rating out of 10. 1 being they do not meet expectations and 10 being they exceed expectations (kinda like school). Many things can factor into what rating a portfolio gets, as stated before, someone with no finished/coloured artwork will typically rank lower than someone with beautifully rendered backgrounds and characters even if the sketches might have slightly better anatomy and composition. That being said, this is in no means a way of saying “oh this person is bad at art”, rather it is “oh this person is not what we are looking for, for this zine specifically.”
Once everyone has been rated we add up everyone’s score like so;
We then sort it so the artist with the highest ranking is at the top and the lowest at the bottom and then work our way down. We find this helps minimize personal art bias
How do you compare DaVinci to Picasso? They’re both good but not everyone finds Picasso to be their cup of tea. Doesn’t mean Picasso is bad at all, just not to someone’s personal tastes. Zine selection can be like that as well. By using the rating system (and rating independently/giving varying numbers) we find it helps bring up artists who have cool and interesting styles that the other mods might not be keen on, If that makes sense? IE someone can be ranked a 3 by one mod but a 10 by another which raises them up and improves their chances of getting in!
So once everyone has been sorted, we select the highest ranking artists and fill up the spots that way. Often there will be a tie or several people who rank the same, so at that time we would sit down together and look at the portfolios and discuss which artist(s) we would like to fill the remaining spots. At this point, we would take into consideration the higher artists. Do they draw in an anime style? Maybe then we will try to select someone who draws in a more cartoony way or realistic so that the zine has a better balance of styles.
I know this is alot but I hope this all makes sense! Being rejected from a zine sucks and I didn’t understand it until I started hosting my own. There are a lot of factors that go into selecting artists and popularity (at least for us) seldom is the definer.
As a side note, 2 out of the 3 mods on this project are industry professionals (meaning we work in an artistic field where we draw and have our art judged for a living). So at any time, feel free to come off anon and send us your portfolio and we would be more than happy to do a portfolio review for you! We can give you tips and maybe some guidance on how to improve your portfolio.
I hope this helps and if you have any more questions or concerns, please do not be afraid to message us!!
