That's what Elias was told after he was chosen as District 4's male tribute for the 39th Annual Hunger Games. Honestly? They were right.
He scored a 6. He got a tooth knocked out by another tribute during training. He nearly broke his glasses while trying to learn how to shoot an arrow.
His family didn't have much growing up, just enough to survive. Food mostly came from putting their names in, but Elias' two older siblings usually did it so he wouldn't have to. Probably for the best, anyways. He wasn't very strong, just a good head on his shoulders. Always quick to calculate things. His parents say it's the only reason they kept him around. He's never been sure if they were joking or not.
His brother, a career, was called. The problem was that his brother was sick. Extremely sick. Coughing up blood, could hardly stand up straight.
Elias hardly thought. He simply volunteered.
He didn't much sympathy from his parents, even if he was sobbing by this point. His siblings were the only ones that comforted him, shared strategy. But deep down, they all knew he wasn't coming home.
His partner tribute, a girl named Ashtyn, was more help than his family. She had been two weeks away from aging out of the games.
Their mentor was...less than helpful. She shut Elias down most of the time, or just ignored him. It got even worse when the judges rated him a 6. By that point, even Ashtyn had given up. The twelve-year-old from 5 had done better than him.
He was hopeless. Completely and utterly.
Thankfully, hopelessness makes a very good show.
Random sponsors paired with other tributes taking pity on him (plus the backpack he stole off a body on the first day) got him way further than he thought. He's been mostly hiding on roofs and wedged inside hidden cellars. He keeps track of the remaining tributes with the paper and pen he got from a sponsor and defends himself with a dull spear he picked off another player.
His luck is bound to run out eventually. When?

Story
Elias does go on to win the games, since he plays an important role in the 59th games as a mentor to two other characters (my story stretches between the 13th, 14th, 39th, and 59th games). Obviously this is just his main story (which I plan to put on Ao3 soon hopefully?), and I'm totally fine changing things up temporarily for roleplays/anything else.
