   jack’s teeth grit, jaw tightening behind the solid metal wall of his mask as he barely bites back the harsh growl of frustration bubbling up his throat. he’s not so much angry at jesse, as he is furious with the situation they’re currently in.

   as with many of the events in his life, things have managed to flip onto their head at the last available second to turn to absolute shit the moment he thinks they’re okay. what had started as a simple scouting mission into an unidentified bunker had quickly devolved into the two of them narrowly dodging a massive cave-in of unstable architecture, leaving them where they are now: deep underground in an foreign maze of long hallways and old, dead tech.

   he’s already in an awful mood. between having to pick up camp and bolt from the city over ahead of schedule and barely making it out of an arbitrary firefight with a couple of thugs, the last thing jack needs now is some pseudo-interrogation from his bartender of all people. it’s hard enough to ask for help as is, and this guy’s been making it worse with every seemingly apathetic glance.

CONFRONTATIONS.

     THERE JACK GOES AGAIN .    it takes everything for gabe to not roll his eyes .    does jack not GET IT ?    he  –  blackwatch  –  doesn’t have a CHOICE .    surely jack understands that sacrifices have to be made for the GREATER GOOD .   isn’t that the point of his job ,  anyway ?   he should get this .   jack should be on HIS SIDE .    like he always used to be .

     the feeling is heavy in the blackwatch commander’s chest twists and coils inside of him like smoke ,   a horrible thing that makes his fists clench ,  his jaw set .   they shouldn’t be FIGHTING over shit like this .   his wedding band weighs heavy on his finger .   the urge to fidget with it ,   to draw attention to it ,   is hard to fight .   but he resists anyhow .

     something in him aches so terribly .    the same part of him that wants to grab jack ,  tell him he’s sorry ,   press the apologies to his lips in gentle kisses .  BUT THAT’S NOT HIM . he doesn’t do apologies .   he never has .   so what if he misses what they had before all this fighting ?   tough luck .

   it’s not even noon, and jack can already feel the nasty ache of a terrible migraine creeping up along his temples and deep into his skull. gabe’s continued stubborn insistence had only served to ramp the growing pain up higher and higher, and now he’s sure that this conversation alone will solidify a trip to his desk for the special painkillers angela handed him.

      (   though, truth be told, jack’s fairly certain they don’t work anymore.   )

   unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be down now, so long as the two of them continue this new habit of arguing the second they’re left in each other’s orbit longer than necessary. jack shoves down the ugly swell of grief at this thought, opts to indulge in the bud of annoyance that leaves his brows furrowing and his mouth turning downward instead.
