Got Mythelf Thome Clear Retainerth
I had been a bit worried the past few days because I did notice my teeth moving rather quickly. I gave a quick ring to my orthodontist today and they said that my retainer was read. I was thinking that, though short-lived were the days of free teeth, I'd rather have my beautiful straight teeth after the torture of 6-months than it just to move back into place.
I was quite surprised that I received these retainers:
They are plastic ones instead of the usual metal wire ones with plastic roofs (knowns as the Harley retainers).
It turns out that plastic retainers, which I got, are very much similar to Invisaligns (and even created by the same lab and company). They are very handy for (and mostly specific to) overcrowding teeth and of course to retain them in place after your braces. However, unlikely invisaligns, they are just to keep things stable. Mine was a bit of a tight fit since my orthodontist did notice my two front teeth deciding to be a real bithc and move about. Apparently this can be a common result for those that have to do twists in their teeth to straighten out hence it is really important to keep your retainers on.
So the news is that I'll have to wear my retainers on for at least a year. My orthodontist recommended that:
I wear it daily and nightly for one month except for B(rushing) E(ating) S(wimming). Good way to remember!
After one month, I can start wearing it nightly. But when wearing it only during the night, remember to keep the plastic retainers in tap water before putting them on.
After a year, I should switch to wearing them twice a week and then reduce it to once a week during the night.
But I've worked pretty hard on my teeth so I'm going to probably keep it on daily for a good 3 months as recommended by those online. My orthodontist has recommended that you wear the retainers for at least one year because that's how long it would take for it to retain in shape, at least for a permanent structure.
Here are some pictures of how they look with them on:
From a distance, they don't really look like I've got anything on. Up close, they look like I've got some weird shiny-type teeth. It was rather painful to wear today since my teeth moved and it has given me some sort of lisp. I am tripping over my words a lot!
They were a pleasant surprise to have because I had braces myself to wear a wire one (which I know would barely even show), but I quite like how customised these retainers are. But I am a bit worried with how fragile they seem! To keep them long lasting, the tips for them:
Clean them at least once a day
Use facial cottons to clean the insides with tap water and handsoap.
Don't use a toothbrush or toothpaste on it because they are quite abrasive and can leave a damage on the retainers which will further leave a mark on your teeth!
I'm looking forward to my new experiences with these retainers and will continue to post on them if I face any issues or experiences with them. At the moment, I am drooling like a mofo and drooled an embarrassing about at my grandparents' place today. Something that I hope to get used to by the end of the week.
Here's an amazing article about the pros and cons about the different types of retainers. I love that one of the cons is that I may throw it away at McDonalds. I'll try not to since I have such a beautiful turquoise case now to hold it in. I hope I don't have to wear mine for a lifetime because I have a feeling they'll be disgusting after several years!
But here's my reflection on my experience of my braces diary:
As a whole, I recommend getting it when you're older. There's no doubt that your teeth will move when you're older and I don't mind getting it again. I know that technology will improve and they'll also improve the speed on wearing braces. In addition, I find that I'm more likely to be aware and careful of any mistakes that I could face (such as unhook brackets, thorough cleaning, avoiding foods, and safe braces habits). However, here are some thoughts which I'd like to share with all when it comes to choosing braces at certain ages:
If you're young: go for the traditional braces. It's less difficult to deal with and sometimes having them for a long period of time will end up with less aftercare. Self-ligating braces are great because they are much stronger and they require less appointments; however, invisalign and ceramic braces are much more fragile and can end up with more accidents if you are not to care for it. I'm all for the extra self-ligation but maybe not quite for invisalign for the younger audience.
It is so important to care for your teeth. The only thing bad I ended up with was that I had staining. But I was crazy and I brushed my teeth three times a day, cleaned it very thoroughly and was paranoid with what I had to go through. And I was considered lazy! As a kid, you are totally more likely to be more lax which can end up with a longer braces-times and more emergency appointments.
Invisalign is awesome if you have the money and you are much older. I have to say, they still hurt and you drool everywhere from what I've heard. I definitely do not that they are a good idea for younger, but I think if they're not in your price-range, self-ligating braces are always good enough and they do cut the times.
And that's about it! Yes, I do find having straight teeth does make me feel a lot better and sometimes I keep smiling and hiding my teeth - but it turns out that I don't have to do that anymore.
I'm glad that it's now becoming more and more coming that older people are getting braces and I would recommend getting them when you're older. And if my teeth do move again, I will think about getting them again. But hopefully they won't move so soon.
Peace out guys, you've been amazing.
