Part One of Five

I finally got around to working on this.  A year ago, I made a comic of the first episode of PnP and I had ambitions to keep working on making more.  I actually plotted out the first six episodes. But, as always seems to happen, real life gets in the way and I just wasn’t feeling into being creative. I made some changes in my life and got the bug to be creative again. Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep making these.

Again, the inspiration for this one is pretty obvious, and there’s a story with this one.

The poster for The Mandalorian was out there and trailers started popping up. So, an idea popped in my head. There was a Mandalorian in PnP.  At the end of the series, there was a question of what Kylara would do.  Emma Fyffe suggested that Kylara might make amends with Randal and even start actually working for the Rebel Alliance. That started me thinking about a future story with Kylara as a Rebel, actually working with Randal. I have wrote out a scene where Randal re-recruited a drunk Kylara in a bar. I had Lii’rah and Corrin rejoining Kylara on the Yojimbo - but things with Corrin were strained.  At some point, Aio and Eren would show up for a bit.  I even developed fan casting for all the characters - of course, Emma was playing Kylara. But I decided I need a big bad - so I looked to the characters confirmed to be in the Mandalorian series at the time and decided Moff Gideon would be good.  Now, that has major significance!!!

I finished this image on Oct 18, 2019 - which was really fortuitous because I had the time to get to the printer and have a print made.  The Orlando Schmoedown was on October 20 and I purchased the elite ticket - which was pre-show backstage access. I had been a Schmoeodown fan for years and some of my favorite internet people were going to be there - Kristian Harloff, Mark Ellis, Dan Murrell, John Rocha, and Emma Fyffe.  (Let me take a second here to say if you’re a Schmoedown fan and have a chance to get an elite ticket to a live event, do it. It was so great getting to see everything and meet everyone.  And everyone was just so generous and kind to share time with us.)

I was excited to meet everyone and say thank you in person for all the work they did.  But honestly, the person I wanted to meet most was Emma because PnP had been so inspirational to me.  So, we are all in a room meeting Mike Kalinowksi and Chance Ellis when Emma Fyffe and Jenn Sterger walk in. I’m standing right next to Jenn and she looks over to me to say hi.  I shake her hand and introduce myself (first and last name because I’m a lawyer and that’s what I do) and suddenly I hear Emma say something like on my God, you’re Brad Burnette. I was legitimately surprised. Sure, I got thank you messages from the PnP crew on Twitter and Reddit for the fan art but I really didn’t expect Emma to recognize me. In the end, I gave Emma the print of the image and got the chance to say thank you in person - I really think it’s important to thank people who share their talent. And she was kind enough to thank me for all of the fan art and say how much the cast appreciated it.

That was just so damned cool. And then the Schmoedown itself was absolutley amazing!  All and all, just a great night!

More trading cards.  This time, the main characters in alternate attires. I had made the Kylara and Aio ones before.  So with some minor tweaks.

The new attire for Huuurgh, Eren, and K’Lev were made with the idea to be used in future works (if I’m ever able to get to them.)  Huuurgh was the toughest to pin down.  I looked at a bunch of “non-canon” images of old Sith armor and was finally able to cobble together something from the models I have.  The other thing that was in my mind with the Huuurgh model that is, if I ever get to that point, M’Ress and a gamorrean would be wearing the armor as well. So it had ot be adaptable to those models.

Jumping back into the trading card theme, I wanted to highlight some of the NPCs from Pencils and Parsecs.

Coop is the same model as before.  The same with Shelly - the face model is still the same as the one I did after Jessica Verdi played the character. But the different hair and attire really change the look of the character.

Veldrin Kane is the bounty hunter named after another artist who contributed some amazing fan art based on PnP. Check out his stuff - it’s great -   website  or twitter

The remainder is the Red Star Raider crew - credit to Emma Fyffe for coming up with these character.  The Kylara image is supposed to around the time she first joined the pirate crew - thus the younger look.  Corrin is the same model that I used before. So is Lii’rah - the face model for this character is actually based on a Karen Gillan model I have.  Suul was really diffcult - trying to model a Weequay face took some time.  I kept referring to ROTJ and Hondo to get what I really wanted for the character.  In the end, I’m really happy with how he turned out.

Three of the Before the Yojimbo series I started

After I finished the comic book project, I kind of slowed down making PnP fan art. I actually plotted out a few more comic books but work life started taking over my free time more and more - which is really ironic since doing all of the fan art was stress relief from work. I did some random images for an episode 2 comic but just was not feeling it.  Frankly, my job had really put me in a funk.

I decided it was time for a change and quit my job of eight years when an opportunity presented itself.  It really is the same type of work but such better opportunities for growth and advancement.  My stress level started dropping and I wanted to get back to being creative.

These three posters came out of thinking about what it was like for the characters before Pencils and Parsecs.  I really like these images. I was very happy with the expressions that I was able to create on each person’s face, capturing what they were feeling at that point in their lives.

Season 1, Episode 1 - The Fresh Start

Part One of Four

After Pencils and Parsecs ended, I had all of these CG models of all these character sitting on my hard drive. And, as I had mentioned many times, this TTRPG show reminded me the importance of being creative.  If nothing else, doing all these fan art images was something “non-work-related” that provided some great stress relief.  And, it was just fun to do.

So, I got the idea to recreate the first episode in comic book format.  When I was a kid, I loved to draw comics for myself - based on known superheroes or characters I would make up. This first comic took a little over a month to put together. Emma Fyffe published it on the PnP tumblr page.  Since then, I made a couple minor tweaks.

Just another fun idea I had - a smuggler and the first mate.  While never officially named first mate, Huuurgh really served that role for Kylara - the same way Chewbacca did for Han.  So, I just put together a couple of images of the ship captains and their first mates. 

By this time, I was pretty happy with the Huuurgh model.  The one thing that I was not happy with was his vibro-axe.  In Return of the Jedi, we saw what vibro-axes looked like - the weapons the Weequay that worked for Jabba were using.  Almost a year later, I finally was able to locate a vibro axe model for free.

These two image were the result of me just playing around with other character style.  This was a kind of anime style.  Clearly, it was an one time experiment since I didn’t do any other images like this.

Trading cards

So, I had this idea to start doing my fan art in the style of the Topps Star Wars trading cards I collected as a kid.  Of course, looking back forty years, I should not have gotten rid of those cards.  But, I remembered them and that started an idea - a series of images of the characters for the show in the style of the trading cards.  I was slowly working my way through renders when Bert announced that PnP would be ending. So, I went full force into finishing the project and printing everything out so I could send them to the cast as a thank you gift for reminding me how important it was to be creative. Unfortunately, you can’t find a video of the unboxing of the cards by the cast anymore but I was able to get a capture while I could.  I’m immensely proud of completing this project and so thankful that the PnP cast enjoyed the cards.
