Steve has been referring to Eddie playing his guitar as him ‘playing with himself’ to everybody throughout Eddie’s post-bat recovery.

They’ve been hanging out a lot together since everyone else is in school and Steve’s unemployed until Family Video is back up and running. Eddie’s become a bit of a shut in since everything happened so Steve is often relaying how he’s doing to everybody else.

Dustin asks how Eddie’s been and Steve’s just like, “Oh, you know. Playing with himself. Glad he’s able to do it after all those surgeries.”

Dustin’s just like: ???

Nancy asks if Eddie needs anything and Steve is like, “Nah. All he does is play with himself. I don’t think he’d be interesting in more books.”

“I - he’s what?”

“Playing with himself,” Steve confirms. “It’s great. He’s doing it in the living room now, not just shut up in his room.”

It’s only until Steve says it in front of Eddie that he realizes how it sounds.

They’re hanging out together. Eddie’s got his guitar in his lap. He hasn’t strummed a chord yet and looks like he’s not going to so Steve says, “Dude, let me see you play with yourself.”

Followed by, “Oh god.”

Followed by, “Oh, no.”

Followed by, “What have I done????”

Eddie laughs so hard he pops a stitch.

being dustin's pothead older sister who still lives at home during the events of stranger things . being in the same classes as eddie growing up until that first failure . graduating with acceptance to an out of state university, making a real go at it until your second year . classes becoming harder to focus on as the words jump and change on the paper

moving back home before grades were even finalized . your mom welcoming you back with open arms while your brother stares you down . eventually hearing about the local drug dealer who mainly sticks to the highschool . seeking him out with a benjamin tucked away in the waistband of your elastic shorts . the self made nirvana shirt your friend made for you hanging loose . forcing your brother to introduce you two with the sole intention of becoming a frequent buyer

meeting the long haired freak and him agreeing to sell to you after school if you promise to come to one of his games . scoffing at the idea of you being back in highschool but agreeing nonetheless . meeting him in the woods, the old bench worn down from weather . asking what you can get for a hundred and being confused when he looks surprised . offering you change despite your grievances and sending you off with an ounce for $30 . coming back to him whenever you run out and watching with piqued interest as your brothers friends play to survive

eddie walking you home after deals, making you go the long way so he has more time to talk to you . offering you and dustin a ride home after the games but making dustin sit in the back so you can sit with your legs slung on his lap as he drives . making dustin loudly complain as eddie flirts with you and you give him embarrassed giggles in reply . agreeing when he finally invites you over to his place, the promise of something stronger waiting for you if you want it . spending the night wrapped in his arms as you snore against his chest . neither of you labeling your relationship and instead just enjoying the other's company
