Conclusion

Task 10

Write a short essay reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of your photographic work and process of putting the portfolio together.

Having now completed my Btec Level 2 in Digital Media Studies course and had my four prints mounted and framed ready for exhibition at the Riverside Theatre Gallery in June/July. I can now truely say I made the right choice of prints and subject for the exhibition. I am extremely pleased with the composition, editing, final printing, mounting and framing of my work. I believe that my choice of subject 'The Legend Of The Grey Lady and The Dark Hedges' will be readily be accepted by the public. I was overwhelmed to see my vision come to life through the editing tools on photoshop.

i acquired lots of useful knowledge throughout my course during the year. Everything from learning how to use my camera in manual mode, experimenting with depth of field, aperature, iso settings, shutter speeds to the difference using different white balance settings can make.I feel more confident in my daily use of the camera. I've also learned a great deal whilst working with photoshop which I was a complete novice at when beginning the class.

Right from the beginning I was determined to capture the story behind the famous 'Dark Hedges' and The Grey Lady' who supposedly haunts them. I had a vision of exactly the image i wanted to achieve. After capturing the trees from an angle I liked I needed to do a significant lot of editing, including using layer masks, colour adjustments, changing exposures and being able to add a fog into my photos for that extra eerie effect. I experimented with the editing in photoshop and finally got them to a standard I am pleased with, something which I was unable to do before starting the class.

In conclusion I feel that I have achieved the outcome I envisioned for my photos. I feel that I have captured and edited my images to the best of my ability and feel more confident using both my camera and photoshop. As as result of this I have recently taken the photographs of my cousins wedding and have a few friends who want me to do family portraits. I hope in the future to use my knowledge to create better more professional photos.

A few words on my photos for exhibition

The Legend Of The Grey Lady And The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges is a unique stretch of road outside Stranocum, Ballymoney. In the 18th century the avenue of beech trees were planted as a striking feature approaching the entrance to Gracehill Houise. Over the years the branches have reached across and entertwined to create aan arched tunnel.

Legend tells that a supernatural 'Grey Lady' haunts The Dark Hedges. She silently glides along the laneway and disappears when she passes the last beech tree. Some say that she is a scullery maid from a neighbouring house who died under suspicious circumstances. Others say she hung herself from one of the beech trees after becoming pregnant to the master of Gracehill House. Another story tells that she worked at Gracehill House and upon becoming pregnant to the master she threatened to go and tell her mistress. Apparently she was murdered in a secret room in Gracehill House and her body was never found.

I have always had a fascination with the trees and of course the stories surrounding the disappearance of the maid and I had no doubt that i wanted this to be my main inspiration for my photography project. I have tried to depict how i think the maid would have looked through my photos and will leave the public to decide which story they want to believe.

This is a photograph which I took of Ellie Moore and Rocha in this image i intend to simply brighten it up a little and clone a bit of the grass in and crop it

File Open - layer 0

Click on clone stamp and clone grass in place of gravel

Go to image - adjustments - brightness and contrast

Go to crop tool and crop to desired size.

Go to layer command and select flatten image

This is another of my photographs in the series of The Dark Hedges in this photo I intend to clone stamp the wire fence out and add a picture of Lynda Moore on Rocha into the image

File open - layer 0 - The Hedges - Click on clone stamp and use zoom tool

File open - layer 1 Lynda and Rocha - Select all - Edit copy

Open layer 0 - The Hedges - Edit paste

Click on layer mask - select brush tool - select brush size and opacity remove any excess parts of the image using brush

Go to layer command and select flatten image.

This is a photograph of The Dark Hedges which is the main focus of my photographic project using photoshop I intend to use the clone stamp and zoom tool to take out the wire fence

Go to layer command and select flatten image

This is my finished picture.

Click on layer adjustment - hue and saturation

Set saturation to -100 and brightness to + 100

Go to gradient tool and set on black and white

Click linear grey icon on left at the top of the screen

Go to the bottom of the screen and drag upwards or reverse if you want fog at the bottom of the picture

Go to the layer mask tool - select brush tool - adjust brush size and opacity

Take away or add fog as required

Go to the layer command and select flatten image

This is my finished picture after resizing and moving the characters again
