5 Tips to Maximize Twitter Engagement

Position dialogue around your followers, not your brand. All too often brands use Twitter as a platform for promotion. That's fine sometimes, but social media is just as much a platform for relationship building as it is spreading the word about your brand. Therefore, it is to deliver content and messaging that has your audience in mind.
If you want your content to be shared, then share other’s content. One of the best things about social media is it enables users to share content with their social circles, which is great for brands because word of mouth advertising has proven to be extremely effective for generations. Just remember: it’s not all about you; Twitter is about give and take.
Listen. This is extremely important. You can’t deliver on the first tip if you don’t listen to what your followers are saying and what interests them.
Your promotional tweets should be carefully targeted to ensure the right audience sees them. However, promotional tweets are only a small part of your total content strategy. In other words, mix it up and create a balanced between brand-centric or promotional tweets and fun engaging tweets that your followers will enjoy and share.
Make it personal. Don’t put up a wall between you and your followers. Reach out to them directly, retweet relevant tweets, direct message (occasionally) and find other ways to make a personal impression on your loyal followers.

Although I no longer bother to print letterhead or envelopes for my design business (thank you, email!), I’d be lost without a business card. Not only are business cards still traded in the real world, but often it’s the business card itself that helps generate business. Plus, if you’re a graphic designer like me, having a good looking card acts like a mini-portfolio of your skills.
I chose this tutorial because I have been meaning to make myself a business card. While the tutorial was pretty basic, it gave me a lot of ideas, and hints on where kerning and baseline shifting is useful(And how to get Proportional Old Style for numbers). This tutorial also included how to set up the document to print multiple copies which is obviously how most people would print out their business cards. Now I just gotta tweak till I have something I am proud of!

Marketing has evolved and changed. While it use to be enough to use strategies as simple as running advertisements, it is no longer enough to simply create awareness. Companies now need to hold attention and create a conversation with consumers, which is why social strategy and social media is now so vital in the marketing process. The same can be applied to personal branding.
Here are five simple steps to effective social media marketing.
#1 ~ Have a Clear Mission
Make sure your mission - what you stand for, is clear to viewers. Make this mission clear and consistent across all platforms.
#2 ~ Use LinkedIn’s ‘Your Day’ Feature
Your Day section, (in Contacts) will show which of your contacts are having a birthday, have been promoted or are in the city you are traveling to. Users can sync their calendars to LinkedIn. ‘Your Day’ will pull up the profile of any contacts you have meetings with so you can get a review of whom you will be talking with. Taking a few minutes a day, to review and congratulate connections can be a very effective way of networking and promoting your brand using social media.
#3 ~ Visualize Everything
Putting an image behind the simplest of messages can boost engagement of statuses and posts. Images can quickly grab attention and make posts more memorable. This is especially important since the growth of Pinterest. It also makes posts more ‘re-post’ friendly. Users can use blank images or images related to the subject and mission to make a statement or ask a question seeking follower response. Before settling for an image, ask yourself “does this image communicate my message well?”
#4 ~ Use #HashTags
Using hash tags on social media platforms such as: Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, allows you to reach a broader audience then just those already following you. This allows you to build your following, while targeting specific audiences. While hash tags should have some relevance to subject being posted about, make sure they are consistent with mission and target audience. Research what hash tags relevant to you are trending (popular). Using these hash tags will maximize the reach of your post.
#5 ~ Make Regular Posts
Posting regularly is what will gain and keep your followers. Having structure in your social media presence is what makes it an effective marketing strategy. There are programs available that will automatically post for you, so you can strategically plan posts ahead of time.
Social Media Etiquette
When posting to social media it is important to consider who will be seeing what is being posted. In most cases, anything posted to social media is not private. It is on full display for the world to see and will be permanently in cyber space (even if deleted). Before posting consider these 12 things:
1) Should I target a specific audience with this message?
2) Will anyone really care about this content besides me?
3) Will I offend anyone with this content? If so, who? Does it matter?
4) Is this appropriate for a social portal, or would it best be communicated another way?
5) How many times have I already posted something today? (More than
three can be excessive.)
6) Did I spell check?
7) Will I be okay with absolutely anyone seeing this?
8) Is this post too vague? Will everyone understand what I’m saying?
9) Am I using this as an emotional dumping ground? If so, why? Is a different outlet better for these purposes?
10) Am I using too many abbreviations in this post and starting to sound like a teenager?
11) Is this reactive communication or is it well thought-out?
12) Is this really something I want to share, or is it just me venting?
Social Media Etiquette
Social media has become a key role in communicating and marketing. It allows people to communicate creatively and instantaneously, across borders, to a huge network of people that would be hard to reach otherwise. But social media can also be a hindrance if used improperly.
One of the first things employers do after receiving an application is search on social media to see what you have been saying. Employers like to see that you’ve been having engaging discussions about schoolwork, subjects to do with your career field and other thought provoking subjects.
On Twitter users can search hashtags to find topics related to their brand and get in on the conversation. While you should be careful to ensure tweets do not damage, but rather improve your professional reputation, it is not recommended to make Twitter restricted or private. Twitter is a social media platform where information should be shared freely.
Different social media platforms are meant for different things. It is important to chose the proper platform to match your target audience and the message you are communicating.
Facebook — General social networking, personal and one of the least formal.
LinkedIn — Very business-like, pure networking. Big emphasis on people search and job search
Twitter — Micro blogging, open sharing of information and conversations.
YouTube — Video sharing
Flickr — Photo sharing
Instagram – Personal photo sharing
Pintrest — Favorite web site sharing
