The reason why Scream's genre awareness works so well is because the point is hypocrisy. They're all mocking characters in horror movies, only to make the same mistakes once they're in a horror movie themselves. Sidney thinks girls who run up the stairs instead of out the door are stupid, because Sidney doesn't know what it's like to be so afraid that you don't think. Randy wants the horror protagonists to look behind them, because he doesn't know what it's like to assume you're safe and then not be. Even Billy & Stu think they're smarter than movie villains only to find out that they can also be killed.
Fear makes you stupid, and we can think that we're better than horror movie victims when really it's just the fact that we've never had to face fear like that. The characters in Scream suffer because they assume they're invulnerable, and the purpose is that they are very much not.
