I feel bad that I'm not convinced that the superhero fatigue isn't a real thing or Marvel's back just bcs the new Spiderman did really well in theaters if only because Spiderman has basically been everyone's favorite superhero for decades now and Spiderman movies don't even have to be good to rake in ridiculous amounts of money. And I say that as someone who loves Spiderman and will watch just about anything he's a central character in.

Like dude...there have been enough Spiderman reboots in the last 30 years that we can have one Spiderman movie with 3 Spidermen and another where nearly every major character is a Spiderman of some kind as well as a major game franchise with at least 2 Spidermen in it. The people want one thing and it's a webby lad suffering more than jesus while cracking jokes like his life depends on it. Much like Georg, Spiderman is an outlier and should not be counted.

I like to imagine the staff at Murphy’s have a running bet as to the nature of Grace and Marissa’s relationship. Like a lot of folks tip into the “there’s no platonic explanation for this” and they’re just WAITING for Grace to “come to his senses” and officially propose. It drives the aroace Grace nuts, but Marissa thinks it’s funny and loves to egg everyone on.

It’s out of the frying pan and into the fire on Stratt’s Vat, where everyone just assumes Grace and Stratt are getting it on. Stratt, uninterested in bothering with baseless rumors, does nothing to quash them. And when she sings to Grace at karaoke (and let it be known, everyone clocked THAT from a mile away), well. If people didn’t think they were sleeping together before…

When Grace finally makes it to Erid, he figures one small perk of living out his remaining days on an alien planet is that mix-ups about his love life are over. Unfortunately, the misguided “there’s no platonic explanation for this” seems to be alive and well on this planet as the biodome engineering crew sets up a running bet as to the nature of Grace’s relationship with Rocky. (It drives Rocky nuts, but this time Grace thinks it’s funny and loves to egg everyone on.)

I gotta be honest, there is no way that Eva Stratt could forget Grace's face, she's not slowly forgetting his face. She's erecting statues, watching remembrance from afar. His face would be everywhere she turned to either by her own hand or not. The entire world knows that Grace went in the Hail Mary just like they would know that Ilyukhina or Yao went.

Grace, however, can forget Eva's face. She's the one deciding what goes on the Hail Mary and what doesn't, and with her counting on his amnesia to make him work, why would she help him remember her? There would be no pictures, no videos, she didn't leave any of the astronauts a ''watch this in case you have no memories'' instruction video. Her face wouldn't be in the terabytes on board, her face wouldn't be in any of the pictures. All the knowledge of humanity is onboard the Hail Mary except for one gaping hole, carved out meticulously, in the shape of Eva Stratt. Grace remembers her now, but for how long?

On a rewatch, Grace’s anger issues are so fascinating. Besides the hints we get of his past, his frustration and almost arrogance that leads to him lashing out and facing what may be a huge line of consequences that had been building up over time. Losing job, perhaps his relationship around the same time, losing respect in his community.

It’s interesting to see since in the flashbacks Grace is a mix of mellowed out but still has that lingering frustration. He raises his voice the moment he gets back into discussing the details of his paper, he starts throwing things in the lab and storms out when he’s proven wrong again, but he instantly shrinks back in on himself once it’s over.

There’s like this desperation for validation and respect with this frustration. And he’s much calmer and trying to humble himself but it seems almost like he’s gone too far in the other direction? He almost punishes himself, he talks down on himself so much for being a coward in the book. It reminds me of when people are so hurt they insist they didn’t care to begin with and it would’ve never worked, but they care so much. He barely even recognizes he’s the second in command at that point. He’s so used to ignoring his own worth he doesn’t understand when people actually properly respect him and his work.

I think just having a friend like Rocky helps so much for his growth. Someone who lets him work and prosper in what he’s good at while not putting him on a pedestal or with these grand expectations that would make him turn around and insist he’s not worth it. They just connect and their differences work together so well. Rocky will call him a mess and an idiot but take care of him and acknowledge when he’s doing great, when he IS brave.

He’s so fascinating. It’s so interesting seeing wet cat of a man with all these issues that hold him back. He had to literally forget himself to do what he was always capable of without his fears and self doubt. Idk I’m rambling

I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.
