Some friends catch up over coffee, others do brunch, but in the world of network news you work with what you’ve got. In the case of a serendipitous crossing of paths with legendary NBC producer (and mentor) M.L. Flynn, it went like this. A few minutes before my final live shot on UT’s TikTok ban, my phone rang. It was M.L. on UT’s (not small) campus, who asked how long I’d be in town. I was supposed to be airport bound, but looked at my watch and realized we hadn’t crossed paths since pre-pandemic. This catch-up was happening. So seconds after signing off, I jogged/sprinted towards UT’s Tower (in boots), ML stepped out of class, and we enjoyed the absolute best four and a half minute convo that’s ever been had. It’s little moments like that, this job makes you appreciate more than ever. Special thanks to her producing prowess for securing this location long enough for a pic and a gracious goodbye! Been blessed to see a lot of Texas, but never explored Caprock Country til a spontaneous Dallas road trip took me due west, and right into the #WildWest. I watched a sunrise alongside a Bison herd, took a hike back through time in ancient canyons, and best of all when I heard, “SNAKE,” I thought to ask (before jumping) “Where?” So here’s to rattlers who don’t rattle, late night road trips, and finding a little corner of #TX as wild as it ever was. I spent three years of my career working in Oklahoma City and would’ve never guessed that a few years later I’d be back walking through a warehouse packed with (legal) Marijuana plants. But since the state made medical cannabis legal three years ago, the industry has exploded. One in 10 Oklahomans has a medical marijuana card and the state now boasts more dispensaries than Washington, Colorado, and even California. Time flies when you’re having fun right? Can’t believe it’s been three years since I joined @nbcnews with an inkling, but not a clue of what was to come. When friends or colleagues ask, “Well how do you like NBC?” I’ve found my answer rarely mentions the place, but always the people. On paper we may be co-workers, but I’ve been blessed to find more friends in the field than I’m possibly able to capture here. Day six of Hurricane Ida coverage and nearly a million people are still without power in a Louisiana summer that’ll melt ya shade or not. Covering the story is character building or a beating depending on your perspective, which is why having the right team around you makes all the difference. Shout out to our audio engineer René for handling the heat way better than I did, @isitaphoto for capturing us in our natural habitat (in addition to his live shot duties), and a special HT to field producer @producerkaylamc. They’re the ones who give us correspondents the game plan, pick us up at 4AM, drive through debris fields, and find us lunch all in one day. From riding out a Cat 4 hurricane in a Houma parking garage to figuring out the best way to tell a power outage story, she’s been all in, whether I’ve been fully caffeinated or not.
