A few unorthodox and inventive ways small business owners can save money while bootstrapping a business.
Here's some advice from our very own Jenny Karn on small business savings.
Because money saved in business = more money for ice-cream!
Everybody wins!

We LOVE sharing this kind of data and we encourage you to support these filmmakers. Your dollar is the best way to tell Hollywood how much we value the creation of this kind of storytelling.
We wanted to start the week out with a couple laughs. Hope you had a great break! We sure did!
How many women can you guess? Do you remember/know what each one of them did/discovered?
Once you make your guess, head over to All Science, All the Time to see if you were right:http://ow.ly/pXjrG

Oh wow, that’s AN AWESOME LIST OF WHITE WOMEN SCIENTISTS! But how could you forget:
Asima Chatterjee: The awesome Indian woman who help discover drugs we use to treat cancer, malaria, and epilepsy! OR Chien-Shiung Wu: THE FIRST LADY OF PHYSICS?! OR WHADDABOUT Ellen Ochoa: The first Latina in SPACE! AND the First Latina Director of the Johnson Space Center. Oo, and don’t forget!! Flossie Wong-Staal: The woman that successfully map HIV and pave the way to prove that HIV causes AIDS. GURL! Mae Jemison: First Black woman IN SPACE!!! And worked the first flight into space after the Challenger Accident. But don’t stop! Patricia Bath: The First Black woman doctor awarded a patent for a medical device: a laser that removes cataracts! (Fancy that!) AND THE BOSSEST! Shirley Ann Jackson: The first Black woman to earn a PhD from MIT in nuclear physics.
Hot damn! Women of Color in Science!!!

It is an amazingly inspiring spec commercial for BAND-AID (meaning sadly, we won't see this on TV) from a former classmate and talented director, Ruthie Marantz.
This story isn't about besting the opposite sex here. Instead, these girls skate because they like to hang out and skate. The story is about them completely and not about how they see themselves in relation to dudes (they're not trying to prove themselves to male skaters to gain credibility here; they're by themselves skating because they like to skate). It's a fantastic concept and it would be amazing if it got picked up.
It's SO important for girls and women to see women represented in a diversity of roles and it's great to see this being addressed in partnerships like the Getty Images and Lean In, in things like the Lean In Collection. Studies show that seeing other women in these underrepresented roles is actually a larger contributor to motivating more women to want to seek out - and succeed - in the roles, themselves. That said, the extra bonus here? This was also directed by a female director. something that is unfortunately also still a rarity (out of the top 250 domestic grossing films of 2013, women directors helmed only 6%).
We definitely hope we see more of this kind of positive content out there in the world - we know there's an audience that is ready for it!

It’s been almost exactly one year since I took the plunge and joined my current agency—a startup that, at the time, hadn’t even settled on a name yet. I was excited about the opportunity but had no idea what would be in store for me at Beutler Wiki Relations or Beutler Research +...
From Leslie:
THIS IS EVERYTHING. Beutler Ink just announced its two cofounders: Jenny Karn and Rhiannon Ruff. I want to salute my best friend William Beutler for recognizing that these women brought the operational excellence, financial acumen, and service line expansion needed to fully realize his vision and to take his company to the next level. GO TEAM!!!!!!!!!!
We're so excited! A huge congrats to Jenny, Rhi, Bill and the whole Beutler Ink team! Get the story, below:
What happens when Jay Z and Will Smith get together to do something? Whatever the hell they want, and it they decided to use their producing powers to bring orphan "Annie" back to the big screen. And the first trailer is here to show you that a lot has changed since the 1982 original.
I have to admit it. As a kid, I tortured my parents with this tale. Although they were amazing parents I fell in love with the idea of orphans (my other favorite story was always Peter Pan) and we watched the tape until the poor VHS started to break down. I even played orphanage, instead of "mommy" with my dolls, although I was a benevolent caretaker (despite that Miss. Hannigan does care for her kids, in her own way I guess). I recently bought the DVD when it randomly (and unceremoniously I might add) surfaced in the "bargain bin" at a local big box store. It absolutely broke my heart.
And even though no one can ever top Carol Burnett in my mind (sorry Cameron Diaz - it's not you, she's a legend) I am extremely excited by this reboot especially for casting Quvenzhané Wallis and Rose Byrne.
The best part? This movie comes out on Christmas which is two days after my birthday which means I will absolutely be taking my parents (and my brother if I can swing it) with me to see it.

If you need a midweek pick-me-up, let us suggest some exciting reading that will definitely serve to be more inspiring than yet another cup of coffee.
Not that we're knocking coffee, of course! We're not animals.
But add this as a side snack to your coffee and we promise, you'll feel more alert, relaxed, and ready to face your day head-on.

For your consideration, alternate universe interpretation.
Sorry Shakespeare, but maybe there is something to this name thing, after all.
The Bechdel Test, the brainchild of web cartoonist Alison Bechdel, bubbled out of a 1985 comic strip called Dykes To Watch Out For. It was Bechdels modest proposal for assessing how well a given film represented its female characters and it went like so: Do you, movie, feature two or...
From Lydia: I can't believe how simple it is to pass. I'm impulsively looking for this in every movie I watch now.
And apparently the test isn't just good for equality, it actually makes dollars and sense too:
Last week, Versha Sharma and Hanna Sender at Vocativ looked at the 50 films that raked in the most box-office gold in 2013 and discovered that the biggest blockbusters cleared Bechdel’s bar. Of the 50 highest grossing movies of the year, 17 clearly aced the test, seven inched across the threshold—the women discussed things that weren’t men, but barely—and the rest failed.(Gravity wasn’t counted, because only two characters got substantial screen time.) But even though just 36 percent of the coronated 50 films passed “with flying colors,” the Bechdel-positive pictures earned way more than the Bechdel-negative ones: a total of $4.22 billion versus $2.66 billion.
