Jackie and Aristotle
happy birthday sweet girl <3 you would’ve been 97 today
“As a little girl, she was often alone. She wrote poetry and rode horses and had skinned knees. They said her independence and courage were extraordinary for someone so young. As a teenager, she foresaw herself as “the circus queen.” It was, at the time, a joke. In retrospect, it reads as prophesy. Her ambition, printed in her high school yearbook, was “not to be a housewife.” Later she wrote a boyfriend at Harvard, “Can you think of anything worse?” She was sure she could not. Years later, she will confess, “I’m an outsider—and that’s uncomfortable in American life.” But this wasn’t such a bad thing, and during the 1960 campaign it was the very element of her personality that so vividly set her apart.
As Time observed of the future First Lady on the eve of her husband’s inauguration in January 1961: “In the larger bear hug of the Kennedy family, Jackie flatly refused to be smothered.” To do so was to exert her own individuality, and it created the sense that beneath the poise and elegance of the First Lady lurked “a beatnik,” the word Washington society maven Pearl Mesta used when denouncing her audacity in going bare-legged. Yet another detail that reinforced the sense she was a renegade.”
