Broken hearts are always built on hope.

the sun had long since set , & like most days , he was only just walking in the door . up before the sun & home long after it had disappeared , kit often worked long hours , sometimes it was from home , well , this home , he spent his time pacing the office , phone attached to his body as if it was a limb , apart of him . loud obscene language falling from his lips was something often heard from the kitchen . but the days like today , where he was gone long before his wife had even opened her eyes were the busiest , paperwork , meetings , all of which while seemingly medial & easy , were exhausting in their entirety with incompetent staff. ‘ you know we can get you your own desk right ? ’ he questioned , his tone as it always was , cold to the ear , his body reclined along the doorjamb . it was his desk . there were things in there that were solely for his eyes alone . not that they were incriminating , but more so work files that were strictly confidential .
typically, his cold words didn’t upset her. it was just how he was and she was mostly used to it by now. but there were some days, like today, where they still made her flinch; logically, she knew it was her husband, but something in the back of her mind rung out as alexander that she honestly had to turn around and look at him to make sure it really was kit. spinning in the desk chair, she turned to see her husband, handsome and icy, and let out what was obviously a sigh of r e l i e f. “i missed you today.” winnie said softly, as if she might get in trouble for it. he looked so lovely, but he still made her nervous. “i just-- this is the most you room in the house, and--” she sighed. “sorry.”
bencvolents.
tongue crossed her back teeth in thought before an unladylike lift of her shoulders occurred. ‘ i don’t know what he likes, so cologne is out, besides, i think i’m allergic to most fragrances . ’ she ponders her own words for just a moment before teeth clasp her inner cheek. ‘ paint ! ’ eyes alight with amazement , a grin on parted lips. ‘ has anyone ever told you win, that you are a g e n i u s ? ’
she wasn’t expecting such an enthusiastic response from elle, which caused winnie to laugh brightly. her cheeks flushed a little with modesty, and the redhead ducked her head to conceal it. “oh, no-- thank you, but-- i-- it was just an idea. if you’d think he’d like it... go ahead!” winnie grinned, obviously a little proud of her answer.
papercaages.
“i’m a touring musician— or, as some might say, a rockstar.” it was the egotistical bit of eli that loved that title, although it seemed ridiculous to go around referring to himself as that. “can’t get away from it. free beer at every venue, sometimes more, you get the gist of it.”
“oh, gosh! i’ve never met a rockstar before.” winnie said earnestly, sitting up a little straighter to listen to great tales she was sure he’d tell. the redhead didn’t catch the gist, but she smiled softly and hoped it came across as though she did. “do you enjoy it?”
winnie sighed, crossing the landing and walking into the spare room she and her husband were using as an office. the young redhead sat up in the office chair, knees pressed to her chest as she read over her third email she’d received since she got home -- it was the second that was a long document that needed revising. typically, she would have done her work in the kitchen, but dinner was made and kit was home late; sitting in his chair at least gave her the semblance of homeliness. she missed him. sighing heavily, winnie clicked through to the next page, barely noticing her husband enter the house. “i’m up here!” she called out, voice distant as she read on.
bencvolents.
her head canted to the side , eyes leaving the fabric to turn to the redhead completely. ‘ i know , i know . ’ though worrisome thoughts crowded her head for a moment before she shook free . ‘ perhaps i should pick something else . maybe not clothes . ’
winnie hummed, taking the shirt from her friend and hanging it back up on the rack. “why not cologne? or a watch?” she suggested, shrugging. folding her arms over her chest, she leant back against the shelving and thought. “or nice paints. he is a painter, isn’t he?”
bencvolents.
a bounce of strawberry curls was her confirmation to the red head . ‘ i wanted to get him something nice . ’ she murmured softly , chewing on her lower lip as she glanced over the shirt once more.
“elle.” winnie sighed, shifting forward in her seat and movie over to her friend. elle was really the only person winifred had really connected with so far. “he’s going to love it because it’s from you!”

fingers curled around the hanger as teeth clasped over her lower lip . ‘ how about this one ? ’ brows furrowed , lines building between her eyes as she contemplated the suggestion .
“it’s cute,” winnie confirmed. there was a mischievous glint in the normally shy girl’s eye and she giggled. “is it for your husband?”
elviramendez.
Elvira was so delighted to see more and more people arriving at the small gathering she and her husband were hosting, which in fact turned out not to be small at all. Almost every single person she’d invited had made it today and, beyond that, nearly everybody brought something of their own. The food was as plenty as the company. Some blended into the crowd easily, others were a little slower, and a couple more looked shy if not nervous to be there. Just like the redhead who was standing awkwardly on the side with a platter of what had to be a delicious strawberry cake. Once the brunette approached her and heard her nervous question, Elvira’s lips broke into a soft, empathetic smile. “Hey, of course it will be! It already is actually, more than alright. I promise, now that I have met all of you, I can tell you for sure that nobody’s biting,” she responded humorously. “No really, thank you so much for being here, and for baking this cake. It looks phenomenal.”
her neighbour -- and the host of the party -- had a beautiful smile, and winnie was greatly comforted by her sunniness. she was glad for it, because her nerves were shocking. the little redhead almost didn’t come to this party, despite having rsvp’d otherwise. parties as loud as this threw her off, and it wasn’t even that loud, it was just overpopulated. it felt as if the whole neighbourhood was there. “gosh, that’s so lovely. thank you. i’ll just pop this down--” the redhead said and did so, before turning to elvira. her name had been on the invitation and winnie had rung her to confirm her and her husband’s attendance, but she still hadn’t met her formally. “hello! it’s lovely to finally meet you. i’m winnie. you have a lovely home!”
prettystclair.
As much as her agency hated it, Hanna loved sweets, and it was one of the main reasons she was drawn to the girl with a strawberry cake in her hands. “It looks delicious to me, but I think I could only tell for certain if you were to give me a bite?” She played. A large part of Hanna’s life were parties, it was one of the ways she networked for her job, but she always preferred the more relaxed setting, like this. She actually sort of felt at home here.
the second redhead made winnie laugh softly. her enthusiasm was both infectious and comforting. nodding, winnie placed the cake down on the bench and pulled a knife from the knife block. “if one of us can find a plate, i can cut you a slice now.” winnie told her with a smile, happy that somebody would be so excited to have a slice of her cake. “i’ve got to admit, it is pretty good.”
stormdaniels.
“i’m partial to it, thank you.” there would never be a day that storm would say no to cake. “i like anything with sugar and frosting– believe me.” he motioned for her to lead the way to the table where the plates were. “winifred. i like that. it sounds like your right out of a jane austen novel. not that i’ve read one but i’ve seen the movies. i’ll call you winnie though if thats what you prefer.”
winnie smiled. storm was lovely. jane austen was a favourite of hers, and so to liken her to a classic author was very sweet. her smile was brighter now, lighter, as if she were more genuine. well, that was untrue; she was simply more relaxed now. “i’ve been winifred forever. i’m trying to get away from winifred, honestly. shall i cut you a slice?” the redhead asked.
stormdaniels.
“i’m sure there will be more cake if we run out of this one. i’ll be sure to get a piece before its gone though.” it seemed that everyone had brought something but him. he needed to go grocery shopping in general so he definitely didn’t have anything to bring to the party. alas it seemed there was more food there than all them combined could probably eat. “well you’ve met me now. i’m storm and including you i’ve met five or so people now. most everyone here seems great though.”
“storm -- that’s a lovely name.” winnie said honestly. she did think it was a nice name. her nerves began to leave her system and she smiled gently. “well. i’ll cut you the first slice. i do hope you like it!” the redhead smiled, nodding towards the cake. it was a pretty thing and she knew would taste delicious; a strawberry sponge was her favourite thing to make. “i’m winnie. well, winifred, but winnie.”
papercaages.
“right, tea it is.” he was almost amused as he retrieved a cup for her. “maybe i should try to drink less— i always use my work as an excuse for my drinking, but now that i’m not really working, i don’t have an excuse to hide behind.”
the young redhead smiled softly as he began to make her tea. “work is an excuse for drinking?” winnie asked with a slight giggle. “surely it can’t be that bad. what do you do?” she asked, tilting her head a little curiously. she couldn’t imagine work so bad it drove you to drink.
papercaages.
“right.” he hadn’t met someone who didn’t drink in a long, long time. not being on tour was just surreal for eli. “can i get you something else, then? coffee? tea? coca-cola? water?”
a hint of nerves came back into her expression -- she could f e e l how confused he was -- but winnie didn’t say anything. she was used to people giving her odd looks about it. instead, the redhead smiled shyly, hoping to look less nervous. “tea would be lovely, actually. thank you.”
stormdaniels.
he was a confident person, thus he rather enjoyed parties. he never passed on a chance to meet new people. she looked nervous but he smiled at her in what he hoped was a comforting way. “everyone loves cake. i think it’ll be just fine. even if its not very good, i’m sure everyone will eat it. i mean, never leave a cake uneaten, thats my motto.”
“it’ll taste fine.” actually, it’d taste amazing, but the young woman didn’t want to boast. “i’m just worried it won’t be enough. i’m sure i’m fretting over nothing.” winnie shrugged, placing the cake down carefully on the counter. the smile he shot her was warm, and she felt herself relax a little. s u r e l y she had a friend in this man. or at least, an acquaintance. “i haven’t met many of these people before. i work too much to meet my neighbours. do you know anyone?”
papercaages.
“it looks bloody delicious, so put it down on the counter already so i can eat all of it.” eli joked— really, though, it smelled amazing and he couldn’t wait to get his hands on it. “would you care for some beer or wine?” he couldn’t cook to save his life, so he went the safe route and bought the alcohol. (why the hell not?)
a smile crept its way onto winnie’s face and she giggled softly. the enthusiasm was very much appreciated, and she was grateful for his generous compliment. carefully, she put the cake down on the bench-top, a little bit proud of her creation. she had to admit, it did look good. “oh!” the redhead stuttered. “uh... no, no thank you. i don’t drink.”
