It bothered him that she had been sent to kill a creature without knowing how to do it. That was a bit unprofessional, but if didn’t suppose that was her fault. Perhaps the blame could be placed on those above her that had sent here on a mission without the details of the mission. It was one thing to look for a creature it was another to be sent to kill it with a lack of knowledge. Nico had worked these kinds of missions before, but knowing what you were hunting a basic idea of how to kill it was important for the mission to succeed. 

Nico nodded, taking what she was saying in and turning it around in his mind. The thing was hiding in her? “Hiding?” He asked. “It’s never tried to hide before, why now?” He was worried but only slightly. In Nico’s mind, there was nothing Ashildr couldn’t handle and this was the same. The fact that it was hiding had to mean something where in others it had free reign. He wasn’t trying to be foolish, it was just the faith he had in Ash. 

Brenna knew how strong Ash was, hell, the woman was stronger than Brenna most of the time and Ash only had half her strength. The idea of something taking over her made Brenna terrified, and angry, and scared all at the same time. Brenna could see it too, this man before her thought the world of Ash- and that was the worst part of it. This entity, this lemure, had never left a host without killing it first. Ever. 

Brenna sighed. “I don’t know why it’s hiding, maybe it knows Ash is stronger than its other hosts, maybe it knows people are onto it and its biding its time in someone it thinks can handle it.” Brenna took a breath. “I love her, she’s my sister, and I’ve known her longer than anyone in this town. But if it is in her, she needs help. She can’t do it on her own.”

“I think if this thing is really in Ash, she needs all the help she can get. Hell, I’ll go to the coven myself if it will save my sister.”

Nico ignored his beer, the desire to drink it fading as the woman in front of him started to speak. His eyebrow cocked up, a questioning look when she said that she had been sent to find the being and to hopefully stop it. Well that was news to him and likely the rest of the damn town. Everyone was in a tizzy worrying about this thing and here she was telling him she knew what it was and possibly how to stop it. Nico followed her logic, understanding what she was saying when she mentioned that it was the reason Ash had been stabbed. At least it explained a few things, though it did nothing to assuage his fears for Ashildr. “How do you plan on stopping it?” He asked because it begged the question considering she had just told him she had been sent to stop it. “No one in this town even knows what it is.” 

He hadn’t been one to venture a guess, having gotten out of that line of business decades ago. He had left the guess work to the detectives and the rest of the town and stuck to his duties as warden, making sure that people within the town stuck to the rules. Thankfully the job was often very easy. 

Nico considered the question, stripping down all the interactions he’d had with Ash since she’d moved in, going over each and every single move she had made, but nothing was out of place. Nothing odd. “No,” he told her honestly. “She’s a bit more subdued, which, for Ash is saying something, but it could just be the wound. She is still recovering, after all. And there is the issue of the scar.” Ash shouldn’t have a scare. His own claws had left nothing on her skin. “It’s still there.” 

Brenna sighed. The whole idea of this thing latching onto Ash made her shudder. She didn’t want to believe it, but the fact of the matter was- it was the most logical explanation. When he asked how she planned to stop it, Brenna just took a sip from her beer. Naturally, she didn’t exactly want to tell him her plan to stop it was to kill it, even if that meant killing whom ever housed it at the time- right before telling him she felt like it was in the woman he loved. Brenna set her beer down and shrugged. “They didn’t exactly give me a how to kill handbook when I was sent here.” She said, skirting around the truth of it. Cause it was true, she wasn’t told how to get rid of it, just to do it. 

His mention of the scar had Brenna perking up. “It’s still there?” She asked, repeating him. This only confirmed Brenna’s fears. If the entity had gone into someone else after the man stabbed Ash, she would have healed completely. No scar. Nothing. But, if it had moved into Ash- then that would explain the scar perfectly. Brenna huffed, cursing under her breath. She now ignored the beer completely now, and turned to face him completely. “Look, you’re not going to like this at all, but I think its in Ash. The thing that’s been going around town and attacking people, I think it’s hiding in her.”

He hadn’t really caught her name at the hospital, truthfully he hadn’t really caught much when he’d left Ash’s room. He’d been lucky Axel was able to pull some strings and get him in first before the rest of the people forced their way in to talk to Ash. Nico had requested that and Axel had come through. He had a lot of respect for the man, he was grateful for his ability to put things in perspective when the normally logical wolf had no ability to. 

He remembered seeing this woman, possibly he was introduced to her, but the rest of the day had been a blur. After he’d left Ash’s hospital room he’d gone home and gotten the place ready for company. Silly as it was, he wanted to make sure the house was ready for her. He’d seen this woman in passing, he knew that. His memory recalled her face enough to say for certain that he knew who she was. Her name, though, that was what triggered the bells to ring clear. Ash had talked about her when she was telling him what she was. 

He picked up his beer, thanking the young man for bringing it and turned his focus on Brenna and no one else. “I’ve heard, yeah,” Nico said before taking a sip of his drink. “What kind of perspective are ya looking for?” Nico had a different perspective on Ash than others for sure, but he wasn’t a fan of the idea of this being a conversation hidden from her. It set him a little on edge. Secrecy for a reason was a good thing, he just wasn’t typically one to do it with Ash. 

Brenna hated the idea of keeping things from Ash, but she couldn’t exactly go accusing her of harboring an evil entity without being completely sure of it. And right now? Well, she was only about eighty percent sure. Brenna tried to think of how she could go about this without saying too much, but still give the info she needed. Really, the best she could do here was the truth. “So, these attacks. I was sent here to find it, and to try and get rid of it.” She sighed. “So far it’s proven to be a little harder than planned.” Brenna glanced over at him. “That’s what happened at the sword fight. That’s how our girl, Miss Invincible, became nothing but a pin cushion to that man.” 

Brenna took a sip from her glass, appreciating the taste before setting it back down. “And that’s what brings me to Ash. And why I needed to do this without her around.” Brenna chewed on her inside of her lip for a second, hoping he would give her the answer she wanted. She wanted to hear that Ash was being completely normal, not an odd occurrence in sight. Sure, that meant the entity was in someone else, and she was basically starting at square one, but it meant it didn’t have Ash, and that’s all she wanted. 

“Has she been acting strange? Have you noticed anything different about her? Other than being wounded, that is.” Brenna said, hoping this man would think with his head, and not his heart when it came to this.

Lately, Nico had found himself at home a lot. It wasn’t just because of Ash, though that had been a large part of it. She was still on the mend and he wanted to make sure she was okay, but it just happened to coincide with the need to get everything ready for the coming school year. Come September, he would be back to herding the little supernatural creatures of this town and the stray mortal. He’d spent a fair bit of time fine tuning his lesson plans to reflect the changes imposed for that year and printed off a bunch of handouts. His Rangrover was loaded down with back to school supplies but he’d decided to stop in for a beer before he headed home. 

“Can I get a pint?” Nico asked the guy behind the bar. He didn’t see Laslow around, which was a pity, he would have liked to speak to him about a few things. Rayne really needed to visit Ash, but he knew how Rayne got when emotion got involved. Distant was a different planet in a different solar system with Rayne. 

His attention was pulled from the man behind the bar when he heard his name and turned to see a pretty blonde standing before him. The face rang a few bells, but it wasn’t until she’s said her name and told him where he had seen her that he was able to piece it together. “Oh right,” he said turning to talk to her. “Sorry, I had to think a bit. It was a chaotic day that day. Kind of one I’d like to forget. What can I do for you?”

Brenna waited for the look of recognition to ring on his features, and she knew she was in the clear as soon as she saw it. Having to ask what she was going to ask would be hard enough- doing so with someone who had no idea who she was would just make it harder. All she needed was for him to know she was a friend of Ash’s, and that he could trust her. If he remembered her, she should have at least that much to go with. 

Brenna quickly slid into the stool beside him, one leg crossing over the other as she leaned against the bar facing him. When his pint was dropped off, Brenna smiled sweetly at the bar back. “Can I get the same?” She asked, thanking the man as he walked off. Brenna saw that there were enough people in the place that speaking with him shouldn’t be an issue in regards to people over hearing them, but she wanted to remain discrete regardless. “I’m sorry for just coming at you out of no where.” She said. “But I wanted to talk to you without Ash around.” she admitted. 

When the bar back dropped her pint off, Brenna smiled sweetly at him once more before turning her attention back to Nico. “I know it was a long day, and a hard one at that. I was there, I saw it all.” she started. “But I need another perspective. And I need someone..close..to Ash to go over it with.” She said. “I assume you’ve heard about all the attacks going around town?”

Formal Intro | Brenna & Nico

Brenna had spent a solid day working out her new game plan after the attack. She had a whole new list of people to look into, one of which being Nico. While Ash assured her that he knew Brenna would be coming, Bren knew she needed to tread lightly with that one. Talking to someone about an attack, and talking to someone about an attack on someone they loved was a totally different ball game. Brenna knew Ash had been staying with him, and naturally her mind just went there- she knew there was more than she knew between the two, and thats why she had to go gentle on this one. 

Brenna had a feeling, deep down, that things were about to get worse. There was no clear transference of the spirit, not that she saw at least. Logic told her that it went into Ash, but she had yet to see any signs of that, but maybe Nico had now that they were spending so much time together. Brenna hoped for the best on this one, that it had made its way into someone else entirely. She wouldn’t kid herself and hope it had been taken out by the brutal way Michael’s head was caved in- she wasn’t that foolish. But the fact she couldn’t face yet, was that Ash had become its next vessel- no, victim. 

Brenna finally managed to track the man down, somewhere that wouldn’t include Ash, and it brought her to Kisa. Bren didn’t mind the venue, in fact she was glad he brought her here because she had heard far too many good things about the place. As she stepped in, she spotted him at the bar. She felt a little like a stalker, but hey, she did what needed to be done. Taking a step up, Brenna opened her mouth, speaking to the man she hadn’t seen since she visited Ash in the hospital. “Hey, Nico?” she asked, a sweet smile on her lips. “It’s Brenna, we met at the hospital, visiting Ash..” She said, hoping to jog his memory, secretly hoping that she didn’t need to jog it.

Jump up onto the bar and cause a scene together (also flashback)

Brenna stood on the bar, the song being played by the men in the back had been a good stomper and she was ready to dance with it, right in sync with the other girls that had jumped up as well. Of course, She wouldn’t have come out to this bar without Ash, the ale on its own was something she knew her sister would be aching for. So, as she looked down at the blonde sitting in the chair below her, Brenna moved along to the music with the others, catching Ash’s eye before deciding she needed Ash up there with her. 

It had been ages since she’d seen her sister, and while she knew she was settled with a husband and a family, Brenna wanted a night with her- and a night she got. She reached down to Ash, taking the ale out of her hand and handing it off to another near by. “Come on, you’re dancing with me.” 

Ash laughed. “Like hell I am.” 

Brenna quirked a brow, the others around them noticing the rejection and shouting in response. They howled and cheered as Brenna looked at her with her classic ‘haha I win’ look. “Lets go, mom. Time to have some fun.” She said as she took Ash’s hand, pulling her up onto the wooden bar in the shack of a tavern on the outside of town. As the band played their instruments in the back, Brenna kicked her feet to the music, occasionally bumping hips with Ash to get her more into it.

She gave her a half smile, “You always do.” Brenna was always the one with the plan. Her gaze followed Brenna’s down to where beneath the hospital gown there was the dressing. Ash adjusted slightly, “Uh, glue and sheer determination?” She cracked a nervous grin, “I was awake for the whole thing. I’ve got stitches inside, but then they had to glue me up - so I have to be extra careful. It’s just lucky I know the surgeon. They uh…” She chewed on her lip, “They also know what I am now. They said they needed to know so they knew what they were dealing with and I tried to not tell them but..” She sighed and shrugged, “They can be trusted. They won’t tell anyone.”

“Jesus christ.” Brenna sighed as she looked at Ash. While she could handle high amounts of pain, Brenna wouldn’t exactly be excited about being awake for surgery. The idea of Ash having to go through that, and then not even really be stitched up, but glued closed just made her feel worse that she hadn’t found this thing yet. She should have found it by now, it should have been gone and not able to get her sister- yet here they were. The news that she told the doctors of her origin, and therefor Brenna’s as well had her holding her breath, at least until Ash promised their trust. “Okay. If you trust them, I trust them.” She squeezed Ash’s hand. “I should let you rest. I’ll go be the detective you’ve always wanted me to be.” she grinned. “Get some rest, let me know when you’re out of here or if you need anything.” Brenna pushed herself up and leaned down, kissing Ash on the head. She squeezed her hand once more before turning and ducking out, leaving Ash to rest.

Ash nodded in agreement, “Then start asking, they all want to know what it is as much as we do,” She ran her tongue along the inside of her teeth, “Nico and Lydiya had front row seats to the whole damn thing. They’d be able to tell you what they both saw, and Nico knows who you are, I told him you were around. Lydiya you’ll need to explain to, but she’ll probably word vomit without even needing an explanation.” She couldn’t help but chuckle at that.

She took in a deep breath, “I can’t think of anyone else, not right away.” She admitted truthfully. Ash didn’t really pay much attention to who was watching her when she fought, her focus was on her opponent 100%. It was only when she had won that she had even seen Nico and Lydiya in the stands, “Two of the pack’s Gammas came to help after though.” She recalled, “Zephyr and one of the Davenport sons.”

Brenna let out a sigh of relief when it was revealed that someone knew she was about. That made things a lot easier for her, especially when her only way of vouching for herself was currently in the hospital with a stab wound. Nico would obviously be her first stop, and then the others. Possibly with the help of Nico, she could use his word a a voucher with the others. As much as Ash thought asking questions would be easy, Brenna was more concerned with the others closing off at the sight of a stranger asking them. 

“Perfect. I’ll figure out a plan, I always do.” she smiled softly. Brenna sighed as she sat back, her eyes shifting to the obvious placement of the bandages. “How did they manage to actually operate on you? Not like they could just stitch you up....or put you to sleep.” She said with a concerned look, knowing what the answer would be and feeling terrible for it.

She exhaled sharply. Ash was still in a lot of pain, and expected to be feeling this rotten for the next eek at the very least, it was like she told Gemma and Lee - she healed quick, just nowhere near as quick as a wolf or vampire does. She’ll be off her feet for some time, “Thank you.” She breathed out, squeezing her eyes shut as she leaned her head back into the pillows. Knowing Mike had gone on to feast in the halls made her feel considerably better. Death was never an end for a valkyrie, but knowing he got the best was important.

Her eyes flickered open as she looked back towards Brenna, chewing on the inside of her lip, “Where did it go? Did you see?” She asked her seriously, her hand squeezing Brenna’s tight. Both women knew that it transferred over to someone else when it died - and well, Ash had clearly caved in poor Michael’s head.

If she was going to be honest, she was worried. She hadn’t seen where the entity went, and in her mind- the logical reason she didn’t see it was that it didn’t have to travel far. If it jumped into the closest able body, it could have gone virtually unseen, especially with how distracted everyone was around them. Brenna held Ash’s hand firmly, not wanting to worry her sister while she was still in so much pain. “I didn’t, but I’m going to figure it out.” Brenna sighed and leaned forward, pushing a stray lock of hair behind Ash’s ear. “You’re okay though, you’re going to be fine and that’s what matters here.” 

Brenna knew she would have to start taking a more aggressive approach to her search, especially now that Ash had been brought into it. She had noticed a few people at the event that she’d be looking for, wanting to speak to them. And as suggested before, she’d have to use her divinity to get her answers if she wanted to get anywhere. Though, she knew Ash would have a better chance with these people than she would. “Ash, I need to start asking around about this.” She glanced back at the door. “Clearly your friends were there, I need an idea where to start.”

She took in a deep breath as soon as Brenna stepped into the room, eyes widening at the sight of her “I’m okay, really, I’m okay.” She assured the brunette when she came to take up her hand. Ash looked up at her with worried eyes, her other hand closing around the clasped hands, “It was that thing, wasn’t it? That had Michael? The entity that you’ve been hunting, it matched what you described.” She whispered to her. Ash knew Michael, and she’d fought him in Ren Fayres in the past too, and that man was not the Mike that she knew when she squared up to him in the arena.

Ash nodded for her to sit down, and she winced as she adjusted so that she could sit up a little, moving a pillow to her lower back to support her better, “I didn’t want to kill him, but when I realised I knew I had to…” She chewed on her lip, she’d never been one to ever regret a kill, “You made sure he was sent off properly, right?” She murmured quietly, he’d died in battle and against a valkyrie, he deserved Valhalla for that.

The look in Ash’s eyes pained Brenna. The worry was all over her face, but it was for good cause. Because it was the entity that had Mike, and it was the strength of that entity that had done the damage to Ash. This fact worried Brenna, all this time she knew it was strong, it was taking over wolves and innocents like nothing, but she never thought it would be strong enough to attack a valkyrie. Even one whose wings had been clipped. Brenna sat down as Ash nodded, keeping her hand firmly in her sisters. 

“It’s all handled, Ash. He’s where he should be.” Brenna assured her. She wanted to give Ash at least that, that comfort that the man she had battled was in Valhalla. Brenna sighed and sat back, her hand resting on the edge of the bed. “It was the entity. And it’s gone dark.” She said. Ash would be able to tell clearly how worried Brenna was about that fact.

Post Op | Ash & Brenna

The surgery had not been pleasant. She was uncomfortable and irritable, but she had managed to sit still whilst Gemma and Lyenne had worked their magic on her. Her wound in her stomach and through her back was now glued shut, as there was no hope in hell of a needle piercing her skin. She was sore, and it was going to take some time to heal after this.

Ash had asked for an hour before people could see her, if only so that she could just close her eyes and rest after that ordeal. She ended up sleeping for the next few hours, even through the pain. It was likely someone poked their head in to check in on her, but otherwise she was left undisturbed.

As she slept, she had a strange dream, it was like her vision was blurred, she was back in the arena with the disfigured form of Michael sprawled on the ground. The corners of her vision grew darker and darker, and with a start Ash woke – immediately followed with a gasp of pain as she settled back in the hospital bed.

Fuck. This sucked. Ash grimaced, very gently moving to sit up. She groaned in pain, hand pressed against her stomach as she resettled herself. It was then that she realised she was now in a hospital gown, prompting a further grimace. A knock at her door had her look up, “Come in, I’m up.” She sighed, readjusting the thin blankets over herself before flopping her head back onto the pillow.

Brenna had been front in center for the sword fight, naturally watching as Ash took opponent after opponent down, just as expected. While most knew how strong Ash was, Brenna was really the only one there who truly understood the power that Ash had inside her. She truly was above everyone around her, it was just a shame she couldn’t show it in other ways. 

Just as Ash had, Brenna noticed how odd her final opponent had been acting. His movements almost like a tape skipping. They were small, barely noticeable to someone not looking for it, but Brenna saw it instantly. She had been tracking it. But Ash carried her own and took him down, though what Brenna hadn’t been expecting was the sword making its way through Ash’s torso- easily. Brenna recognized it the moment she looked at the man, the moment Ash lost her cool and smashed his head in. As quickly as it had come, it was gone. 

While she knew she needed to kick her search for this entity into high gear, Brenna had something much more important to attend to. The wounded Valkyrie laying in Spiritvale General. When she heard the voice from inside, Brenna pushed the door open gently, stepping in and closing it behind her. Seeing her sister like this was almost numbing to her, she shouldn’t be in this situation, this should have been impossible. “Ashildr.” She said, stepping up and grabbing the blonde’s hand.

“You say that, but no one expected me to be cast out either. You need to watch your back.” Ash reminded her carefully before looking across the tavern, a small smile forming on her lips at Brenna’s teasing. She shook her head with a chuckle and looked back at her, “Not give you the time of day? Do they not know who they’re dealing with?” She grinned, “Maybe you need a better cover story, or think of a more creative way to convince them.” She winked playfully.

Ash chuckled at her suggestion of a better cover. “Ah yes, the young determined lawyer from Washington D.C. just isn’t good enough it seems.” She grinned. “I was trying to get info without forcing it. But I think I might need to use some of that truth serum I’m built with.” she chuckled, referring to her divinity, knowing Ash would understand.

Ash blew out her cheeks and rolled her eyes, “It’s the same there, same here, same wherever you go. At least you know it’s consistent.” She shrugged her shoulders and took another gulp of her drink, “Just make sure when it comes down to it that they don’t blame you. Last thing I wanna find out is that they’ve clipped your wings too.” She’d be livid if that ever happened. Ash then laughed and waved a hand apologetically, “Sorry, sorry. Let’s keep it to being ladies of leisure. Seen anything you like around? Met anyone fuuun?”

“I don’t think they’ll clip my wings for their own stupidity.” She said as she looked around at the crowds walking through. “If they did that, they’d have to deal with us both- and you know how that would turn out.” Brenna smirked, a devilish look in her eyes as she lifted her cup to her lips. At Ash’s mention of her meeting anyone fun, Brenna just scoffed. “Yeah, if you count a few yummy cops that wouldn’t give me the time of day, suuuure.”
