Ever been a surrogate to your own baby?

Crafted in love, inspired by and innately entrenched in every fiber and cell of YOU?

Carried with pride and hope on the horizon. You fed that baby with everything and everyone you allowed in your spirit. You made plans for that baby - how it would be conceived and exposed to this world that instinctively takes and takes and takes and takes from black women until you are empty and hollow…just a shell of your former self.

Draining you for your intellect, swag, culture, creativity, compassion, advocacy, activism and ideas…

You create and painfully birth your brilliance after doing the emotional labor; and bring forth this baby that represents everything that makes you - YOU. Then they claim it as their child and give you the honor of being its nanny.

Sis…if you are going to be your own doula…fight to protect, nurture, and send your intellectual and spiritual babies into the world ON YOUR TERMS.

If only exhaustion were currency...what riches we would all have in a world where we work like dogs for scraps and the color of our skin determines how far we can get and how soon we are erased and if justice is ours to have and where we can live peacefully and how we can exist without struggle and who we can love without hatred and what we are worth as human beings.

I am my best friend, my number one advocate and ally and the person I can depend upon most.

Constantly giving and supporting others but not feeling it is reciprocated is exhausting, draining and hurtful. Once you acknowledge it…the next step is working on it…by working on you and practicing self care. We don’t do it enough and we don’t do it until we hit rock bottom.
