"There was a brief episode when Kurt and Courtney lost custody of their children, and while Frances and Lip were placed with Kurt's mother, Alley and Skeeter stayed with River and his family. It was only about 2 weeks, and the twins were just 3 years old, but River brought them down to his family home Los Angeles, where he, his siblings and mother all cared for the children. Drew, their god mother was there frequently, as well. When asked River said that period of time was the time of his life. He adored the kids, and loved them as his own. He was more than grateful to have spent the time with them, even under the unfortunate circumstances of their parents. He said how his nickname 'Rio' originated when Alley Rowan Cobain couldn't pronounce River, so they adapted. Even after Rivers passing, the Phoenix family made a great effort to stay involved in the twins' lives, as they'd come to love then as much as River did, and they wanted the children to grow up knowing how much he cared for them. It was reported that they'd spend holidays together as well as birthdays, and the twins would spend the anniversary of River's birthday with his siblings. Especially when the relationship between their mother and then would become volatile, they always had a sanctuary at the Phoenix residences."
