people coming together to make earth better. trying to repair the damages from the sun's dimming, trying to repair the environment, trying to repair global relations. they want to be an earth worth saving, an earth that grace would be proud of

space travel becomes a huge global priority, the nations of the world pool resources and there are huge advances in technology (especially with scientists studying xenonite!)

the project hail mary launch date becomes a huge global holiday. there's a parade in almost every city all over the world in honor of the hail mary. people lay candles and flowers at memorials for yao, ilyukhina, annie, and dubois. murals of grace and rocky cover building sides. people gather in the streets and remember those who saved them, and banners that read "grace rocky save stars" flutter in the wind above the crowds.

coca cola airs a VERY insensitive commercial with some low quality eridian puppets. the commercial is slammed online and company stocks plummet

people continue to live their lives as normal. because of grace and rocky, because of the beetles, the sun is saved. earth keeps spinning.

Hi sorry just had a thought. The clock Rocky brought Grace wasn't ticking at all when he first brought it to him. Couple theories

1) it's actually annoying for clocks to be on all the time for Eridians, in the same way it is for most people hearing a clock ticking before getting used to it. The last thing you need on an empty ship with your dead friends is to go insane from a clock ticking

2) at some point Rocky became so sad and lonely that he turned it off. Like a "what's the point of knowing what time it is anymore, I know what day it is internally and that's good enough" thing. Or maybe he only turned it on once and awhile after he slept (since the lengths are unpredictable) just to check what day it was before turning it back off. Why count the hours if it's the end of the (petrova) line

3) Rocky made it at some point after everyone died because nobody was around to tell him how long he slept

Option 4) It wasn’t a clock, it was a kitchen timer.

It is extremely difficult in translation when you don’t have a third language in common to make sure that what the other guy is giving you is actually the word you’re after. For example, a lot of the landmarks that have retained their native name in the United States, that native word actually just means “river” or “mountain” because the English speakers were acting asking for the name of this specific river, and the Native Americans thought they wanted the word for “river.” Another example would be if you point to a red book and ask “what is this,” how do you know you have been given the word for book and not the word for red? Without a third language in common, you don’t.

When you don’t have a third language in common, it is extremely difficult to try to build a functioning vocabulary because there’s so much guesswork on the part of either party in trying to tell what concept is attached to the sound that you were just given, or what word is being solicited.

So if Rocky looked at the clock and its ticking noise and assumed “oh yeah that’s a timer” and then went and got a timer, but Grace thought it was a clock… Even if you have a third language in common, if any one of the parties’ grasp of that third language is imperfect, you will end up receiving responses that aren’t quite what you’re after or are completely different. There’s a lot of experimentation and a lot of asking for the same word in different context to make sure that you’ve got it right.

I can guarantee that as Rocky learned English, he had to update his own internal vocabulary and realize that he had the wrong word memorized. But also Grace definitely had some pretty substantial translation errors in his database that he later had to relearn.
