James Frey-A Million Little Pieces

For my final media review I am covering a book I have read a couple times within the last few years. This book was first recommended to me by one of my friends, and it is a memoir about the author’s earlier life as an addict and his journey through a inpatient rehabilitation program. First of all, the story interested me because I enjoy reading about other people’s lives and because addiction is something I have never personally had my own experiences with. I have read other stories on people who have addictions, but Frey’s A Million Little Pieces was something different. Of course there are parts that are embellished in order to add excitement to sell the book, but I find it amazing that in his situation he was able to overcome and face his addictions while going against the twelve steps and everything that the rehab program was about. There was a lot of crazy characters in this book (i guess if it is full of addicts that would be expected), and I think that all of their personalities and stories wrapped in with James Frey’s worked perfectly. If you are not interested in memoirs or even novels that regard things like abnormal psych than I would not particularly recommend this book, but psych and other people’s thoughts and lives are right down my alley!

Film vs. Novel- Who Wins?

So for our latest assignment I wrote a compare and contrast paper on The Fault in Our Stars, the movie versus the book. I actually thought this paper was very interesting and kind of fun to complete because I always read random things on the internet of people comparing things such as this, and always have thoughts like “this is not how it goes in the book” when I go and see a film version of something I’ve read, but have never before sat down and written all of the differences. First of all, I chose this book and movie to compare for a couple of reasons and they are, 1. I have read/viewed them both the most recently so it was fresh on my mind, 2. This was the first time that I went and saw a movie before I read the book, 3. This is also the first time that I have ever actually enjoyed a movie version more than a book version of anything. Another reason that I really liked having the chance to write out this paper is because it actually kind of surprised me to see just how many differences there were between the two, and to consider that the ones I wrote about are only the ones that I noticed. There could be so many more! This experience has made me so curious to what else was different between the two that I have honestly considered reviewing the movie and rereading the book. Another thing that crossed my mind while writing this paper is that I wonder if seeing the film before reading the book had any kind of responsibility for my greater enjoyment of the film? I say this because whenever I read a book first, I make it all up in my head, I imagine the characters and the scenes. This usually makes me disappointed when I go and see a film and then nothing is at all like what I had expected. But to conclude this post I just want to say that I found the movie and book versions of The Fault in our Stars to both be pretty good, and they both have some parts that enjoyed more in one version over the other. With that being said, go see the movie. (:

eBook Rev.

I decided to conduct my research for the class project on the electronic book revolution. I picked this topic because it is something i know very little about, seeing as i have never owned or used any type of eBook device. Another reason being that I absolutely love books, words, reading, all of it. I have such a strong passion and appreciation for all the things a book can be. Anyways, so since I love books so much and because eBooks are continuously growing in popularity, I decided that I was interested in learning a little bit more about them. I have to admit that I did like doing the research, and learning all of the new information about how that industry has progressed over the years, but none of it really impressed me. That is, until I saw what the future of the electronic book could have in store. The video that I used for my presentation truly amazed me, and I think that if/when eBooks reach that level in technology they could really change so many aspects for students, children, employees of all kinds. But until that day comes, I still think I prefer the tangible printed book and it’s authentic-ness. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the research part of the project, but I am never a fan of doing presentations, especially on things that I am not super educated about. My topic choice was changed two days before the due date, and involved a lot of dates that I could not memorize. With that being said, I have enjoyed watching other’s presentations though and I think this assignment is really nice because there is such a variety in the topics that everyone chose, and allows me to get to learn a little about many different things.

Eye Opener, or Nah?

So for our class’s first assignment we had to keep and maintain a journal of our individual use of ANY type of media. I believe the objective of this assignment was to be shocked at the realization of how much media we consume regularly, but being raised in this day and age, that was the outcome I obviously expected going in to the assignment. To my surprise though, I was amazed by where the majority of my media usage was coming from. I think this class and this particular assignment kind of opened my eyes and made me realize that media is not just television, the daily paper, or the radio. I don’t believe that i ever originally took books, phone use, and things of that sort into account- I am not sure why, but I just didn’t haha. This project also really allowed me to see how the types of media I use the most often are basically regulated and revolve around my everyday schedule. For example, I work as a receptionist and i had an ungodly amount of hours recorded for my use of reading and the radio because I read the whole time I work and there is a radio on for my whole eight hour shift every single day. Overall, I did not particularly find this assignment to be extremely useful but I did understand it’s purpose and it concluded with some interesting results that I did not originally expect to end up with.

Punctuation

Buck - M.K. Asante

Last semester I took a social psychology course, and as an assignment my teacher required my class to attend a seminar at F.C.C. The speaker we viewed was M.K. Asante, and he was a lot more interesting and inspirational than I would have ever of guessed prior to going. Anyways, M.K. was a college professor, rapper, producer, and writer, talk about impressive right? Asante used his book, Buck, as pretty much the outline of his presentation and then afterwards there were options to purchase this book. The story he told on stage and the idea of reading his book stayed on my mind for a few days before I finally cave in and bought it on Amazon, so here is my review:

Buck is a memoir of M.K.’s life; he grew up in the ghetto of Philadelphia, doing drugs and committing petty crimes with his older brother and his friends that are gang members. M.K.’s mother suffers from extreme depression, his sister is locked up in a psych ward, and he jumps around from school to school due to poor behavior, so it is very easy to say that life for him was not the easiest. The book includes a bunch of very relevant excerpts of r&b songs that progress through the years, as the book progresses through his years in life. Anyways, the book shows a beautiful transition of the author’s hardships in early life, to his great accomplishments and success as he matured. I found this book to be very well written, and even really relatable with some of the material that is covered. I would suggest this novel to anyone would appreciate a quick and easy read because this book does rattle your emotions in some areas because of how open and honest M.K. decided to be while writing this novel. I also found it amazing to realize that this very normal man started out as a young, troubled boy that had nothing built a new life for himself even when there was every obstacle imaginable standing in his way throughout his journey. This book was a very inspirational read, and I believe that everyone could gain something from it, even if only entertainment.

The Weeknd- Earned It (50 Shades of Grey Sountrack)

50 Shades of Grey- the film

For my first Media review I have decided to cover the 50 Shades of Grey film because it is the movie that I have seen the most recently. Let me begin by stating that I was very, very late with hoping on the book bandwagon. Once I gave in to reading the books, I finished all three within two weeks, right before the movie was released in theaters. Now, I did enjoy the books because they almost addressed situations that most people would have never chosen to openly discuss otherwise. The premier of the movie was obviously a very big deal to many people, and I heard/read so much positivity about the film before going to see it. Even the trailer was extreme, and I was excited to see how a movie, based on such a sexual and extremely detailed novel, would be successfully and tastefully displayed.

After going to see the movie it was safe to say that I was disappointed. The trailer was much better than the film as a whole; even the movie's soundtrack was a bigger success in my eyes. I found it obvious that the hype over the movie and even the creation of it was definitely because of money, and how big of success the books were. I think the techniques used to attract attention was that reading the books, seeing the previews, hearing music from it on the radio station, seeing ads and posts about it all over the internet, and just in general how big of a deal it was to see a movie on something that has never quite exactly been accomplished before. The message was sent to try to build even more off of people's fantasies that had risen from reading the novels. In the film, that rich, sexy, mysterious lifestyle was definitely portrayed. The movie also did a really good job of capturing the awkward, innocent and normal girl next door, falling in love with the man who has everything and being able to change his ways. This is what every woman who read the books day dreams of.

Personally, I think the movie spent too much time and money on the landscapes, sex scenes, and details to display wealth. The actual storyline and any conversation in the film was rushed and awkward, and followed the book to a minimum. I thought the actors were wrong for their parts, and honestly believe that a lot of the movie was just thrown together to have it out in theaters in time for valentines day. For a film that such a big fuss was made over, it could have been done in a much better fashion if the time had been taken to do so. Another thing that disappointed me was that if someone who had not read the book had gone and seen the movie, they probably would have found themselves confused and a little bit unsure of the real plot and story behind all of the extreme fetishes and personalities.

Introduction- Becoming Blog Competent

They call me Cheyanne,

This is my first time actually attempting to make and maintain a functioning blogging account. I am attending my third year at Frederick Community College because it took me a little while to find my niche, better late than never, right? Anyways, I have happily decided to pursue a major in Human Services, and am an aspiring social worker. I am currently taking an introduction to electronic media course to cover my required art credits - since I am artistically challenged it seemed like my best option. CMM101 is what has lead me to begin this blog, and I am excited to see how this assignment turns out!

Besides school, I work full time at a assisted living/rehabilitation health facility as a secretary. While my job may not be the most exciting, I really enjoy being around people and working in an environment that most people my age don't usually appreciate. Other aspects of my job that appreciate is that it allows me me to make money, while giving me the oppertunity to do my school work and it also gives me a lot of time to read books.

I don't really get much free time, but when I do I just enjoy chilling out and hanging with my friends. On weekends I visit a lot of my friends at other colleges that they attend, or I stay in and catch up with my family and watch movies.
