Final project: Photography is my main form of art however I also like to paint. The kind of painting I enjoy is a total flow kind of process where I go in with very little in mind and just get messy letting it come to me as I go. Painting is also a lot more personal for me because i think there is a level of unconscious emotion and thoughts that arise and take form. I paint primarily with my fingers and used acrylic paints and MDF board.

Artist Statement:
For this project, I wanted to go delve into the meaning of “hands up.” With all of these racial issues exposed in the United States right now, I found it important to draw a connection to the gesture. I wanted there to be clear tension from the first gif to the last. The series is meant to make people think differently about racial issues, and how throwing your hands in the sky can either be an act of survival or pure pleasure and fun.

I wanted to use photographs for this project because i am a photographer and they speak to me more. I explored the idea of using my hands to show and explain certain actions. Hands are able to and do communicate so much throughout our lives so this was my ode to that.

I came across this quote about dance and thought that most of what's said could also be relevant for performance art.

Like love, it is beyond reason. Ephemeral as breath, concrete as bone, dance is made of you. You sculpt space. You write with your body in a wordless language that is deeply understood. Reading response: Roselee Goldberg Performance: A Hidden History I recently did a project about performance art and how during the 1960's-1980's this was a crucial form of art that addressed escaping the confines of the "traditional" art, the art that the system was comfortable with and was used to. This reading reiterated some of the things that i discovered while doing that project. There is a direct relationship between the artist and the audience in performance art. There is a great sense of vulnerability in being present and not being able to hide but rather confronting the audience. I loved how the reading said "Performance is the expression of artists who wish to challenge the viewers perception of art and the limits of those perceptions". I also think it was interesting to read a bit more about the history of the art movements and how performance has stemmed from those, still addressing the same desires that those many years ago had in mind while performing.
Film response: The Artist is Present I had heard of Marina before and had vaguely heard of "The Artist is Present" but loved watching the film to really understand more about performance art and Marina's work. There were so many things that stuck out to me throughout the film but one of the things she said spoke to me greatly. She was saying that artists must be warriors, that they must have the determination and stamina to conquer not just new territory but also self and weaknesses. Who better shows this and exemplifies this in their work than Marina? It's clear she lives this message. I think someone in the film said that Marina has always played with the edge and that her interventions reveal human nature, but what is art but human nature? I also enjoyed watching her speak with the younger artists that were about to re-preform for her. She focused the energy that it takes to create presence. I thought about how this is absolutely crucial in not just performance art, but in any kind of art, to truly give your audience in experience. She talked about emptying oneself before the performance. I think it goes both ways and both are vital. Emptying oneself in the work but also, in times, emptying oneself prior to creating in order to fill from something new.

Was that James McAvoy? JK I had to do a rewind though. I no this is not your final piece but I felt like this was much more poetic and I really enjoyed the music and the synchronization to the footage. It was beautiful I like that she used color and black and white your video has a lot of emotional layers. Or at least for me it did. Good job
This is actually one of my favorites that I've seen for this assignment. I'm not even exactly sure why but I respect that. The music is on point with the melancholy feel of it and something about the snippets that are chosen are so reflective and makes you feel a part of the story of whatever is happening. Great job.
Vanishing and becoming
In this project I focused on the message of the words. The images start black and white and in the end turn into color. I was mostly inspired by the speech and loved working with the simplicity of the clips. I wish I had a little better sound layering but overall I think the video has a message of overcoming.

Your project is very contemporary and speaks to the injustices of not only those going on today but those that have been going on for generations. No color really adds to the value of your message, and the voice is soo mesmerizing! I would regard your work as, as top notch as certain, powerful, commercials that are being aired today
Such a powerful message, especially with the voice over. I like how it addresses a multitude of people and the importance of inclusion. I also agree that the black and white helped in portraying the message. I think I almost would have liked it to be sped up a bit but other than that I can't think of anything!

This is my work of video art. I wanted to create a piece that shows that when one spends time bettering oneself, we tend to find something we need but were not looking for. Whether it be self confidence or a new romance, when we put effort into becoming better, the universe rewards us.
This piece is my original music recorded with the help of my sister. Together we are Los Johnson.

My first performance piece. Clips from my childhood homevideos were projected over me as I painted and obscured the surface and images with black paint. That time in life is gone and no one can go back. The memory is still there but not all of it. Everything is temporary.

I decided to reblog my video. I think I posted it too soon and it got buried.
Your music choice was very different and I like that, especially since the it was omnious and spooky. I was a little mind-blowing by the faze out, it was trippy lol and it worked so well. The effects with the lighting were pretty awesome. Overall I really enjoyed your project, and the originality you’ve created in this piece.

I agree, I think your music choice is interesting but I also like how it fits with the video and the mysterious and almost eerie nature about it. I also like how it flashes with the different colors. I think it's pulls it together nicely!
