This piece is a self-portrait. I wanted to incorporate the beautiful and subtle aesthetic of watercolor - so I painted textures and different shapes and scanned them into photoshop. Using photoshop, I layered the watercolor textures, patterns and a photo of myself to create a simplistic and beautiful portrait. Using different blending modes and filters, I was able to achieve a ghostly appearance and texture that give the piece interest.
Project #5 - Performance Art
I incorporated music, dancing and painting together, not knowing what was going to happen. The element of surprise swept me off my feet - but I shook it off! I wanted my piece to be fun, playful and humorous and unexpected, even to me.
Reading Response #5
The documentary Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present, was very interesting to me. I definitely gained a better understanding for what performance art is and what it tires to accomplish. Before watching the documentary, performance art was a bit of a mystery to me. I really loved her training methods for the 30 artists that were to be performing in her MoMA show. Taking three days to be quiet with the self, to be present and to fast would really be a challenge. I have so much respect for her now that I understand more and have contemplated what really goes into her performances. She has a lot of courage.

Vanishing and becoming
In this project I focused on the message of the words. The images start black and white and in the end turn into color. I was mostly inspired by the speech and loved working with the simplicity of the clips. I wish I had a little better sound layering but overall I think the video has a message of overcoming.

4D project
I really enjoyed this! Really excellent music choice and interesting visuals. I do agree though, transitioning in the middle might help it flow a bit better. This is really great work though!
Artist Statement: Project 4
My theme here is memories. Memories are just a projection of what we have experienced. The man and woman here are remembering their relationship together, slipping in and out of reality and their memory. Reality here is represented in color, whereas, memories are in black and white. The song empathizes the theme of vanishing and becoming, by having relating pauses. The clips of reality have breaks in between, also repeating the theme of vanishing and becoming. The memories are strung together without any breaks to emphasize the difference between their reality and their memory.

Reading Response to Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt
I really enjoyed reading Sean Cubitt’s theories about art and how he ties it into philosophy and ideas of reality. My favorite part is where Cubitt talks about how projection constructs our ideas of ourselves, humanity and the world. Even stating that everything we experience is a projection of a “higher reality.” This really hits a powerful place, giving art an even deeper spiritual and yet philosophical meaning for me.

Artist Statement: Project #3 - The Loop
In this series, I took clips from one of my favorite videos online (watch it if you get a chance, it's wonderful! http://vimeo.com/36519586) and only made a section of the clip move. This, I feel, emphasizes the stillness of nature. In a high-tech and constantly moving world, I wanted the viewer to pause on these, and feel the calm. Almost as if the world has come to a halt and just you are experiencing it.

Reading Response
GIFs are really an integral part of the internet these days. It's impossible to scroll through a tumblr page without seeing at least a dozen GIFs. They are simplistic, but filled with so much more context than just a still image. It was interesting to learn that digital art has now been auctioned for art collectors. GIFs to a lot people, I think, aren't really seen as a piece of art. They are often just consumed like all the other information and entertaining things found on the internet. I think it is great that now there is that recognition of this movement towards digital work in the art world. Maybe now with this transition, artists and/or aspiring artists will be more inclined to create inspiring and unique digital works, like the GIF.
I will do a gallery wall when I get home tomorrow. Until then, here are done individual pictures.
I really love this series! The creatures look so great with the drawn color over top, it really emphasizes the shapes and brings life to the illustrations. I also love the layering you did, as a while it's a bit abstracted, but close up, its rich with detail. I especially love the fish one - even though it's just fish as the subject, it feels very balanced and interesting. Would make a great pattern! Very nice job!
