The Andaman Islands, located off the coast of India in the Bay of Bengal, are still home to nomadic tribes that give girls an additional name at puberty drawn from a plant or tree which is flowering at the same time. When a girl reaches puberty the natives think of her as having blossomed under the influence of the same natural forces, so she is given her flower name which is no longer used after she gives birth.
