Covering and testing the dome. Due to the fact that the plinth as not been finished yet I decided to hang the dome, just as a proof of concept. Using lycra to cover the dome worked an I was happy with the text.
Above is my self assessment form which was completed on the 22/05/15

PubNub to the rescue!
After trying to work out how to run the websockets I found that I would need to run multiple servers to get the code running properly. This isn’t really an option for me as I only want to run one.
After looking about online I found pubnub. This simple code ‘ Adds Realtime Communication to IoT, Mobile and Web Apps’ simply put, it lets me send messages to their servers and then it publishes the messages to my clients. as a result it means i’ll only have to run one server!
more information can be found at: https://www.pubnub.com/
here is a demo of images being sent over Pubnub sockets

This link is for the photos that I display on the ipads. They are saved in an imgur album so that I can use each photos URL in my code. This means the photo’s can be viewed on any machine.
Project Evaluation
The Right to be Forgotten was the main driving force behind the conception of the major research project. The European court ruling, 13th May 2014, stated that a person may apply to have websites removed from an online search index. A simplified version of the ruling is that a person can ask Google to stop a search listing showing up although it should be noted that the websites are still running and can still be viewed online. The Right to be Forgotten has split public opinion with some calling it pro freedom of speech and others arguing it is detrimental to free speech. I feel that by having this context behind the project, there is a deeper meaning (story) to the piece that I have not been able to achieve in my past works.
Changing the data set early in the conception of the project was also a positive idea that stopped the work from slowing down. At the beginning I had intended to use a website (hiddenfromgoogle.com) that acted as a database of sites effected by the European ruling. Unfortunately this website was not being updated and therefore I would not have had enough data to complete my project. As a result of this I decided to use British news articles that had been hidden by the Right to be Forgotten. This allowed me to have a bigger data set and I feel this decision made my project better as it has turned my work into ‘an internet catalogue’.
Using Google maps was a positive decision as it allowed me to write the code in Javascript and HTML, this meant the code could easily run on any computer as well as mobile phones and tablets. As a result of this the code became much more compatible with all kinds of technology. The idea to use a Leap Motion as a gestural interface was a good concept but became more of a hindrance as the project evolved. I feel this is because the Leap Motion controller cannot give the accuracy which is required to control the map effectively. Although I am proud to have been able to integrate the controller and show that it is possible to control the map with gestures, I think that the Leap Motion needs more development and refinement to make it a more viable alternative to a keyboard and mouse.
I think that projecting onto a hemisphere adds to the project because it gives the effect of a globe and this is what I wanted to achieve. Yet, it has been difficult to rear project onto the dome and covering the surface accurately. This will need more attempts but I think that when the final plinth is created it will improve the projections. I feel the 22nd of May has been a good demonstration for my Major Project Research and Unit X and proves that my designs will work and be effective but more development and refinement will be needed for the degree show but I believe this is entirely possible.
After integrating the click gesture with the leap motion I found it was horribly inaccurate and hard to use. I feel this would make the users struggle to interact with the installation and have therefore removed the “click” and made it so the cursor must hover over the marker for a set amount of time.
