When she collapsed against him, his arms immediately wrapped around Wendy's waist. That brief moment of letting go, although forced, had been the worst minute in years for him. Not knowing where she was, if she was okay. If she had actually lost consciousness, he would have never found her in the dark, Gareth realised...
He nodded his head at her words. That was exactly what they were trying to do, but it didn't seem like whoever was doing this, was making it easy for them. "Well...at least we have already made it one floor down..." Gareth muttered, half-jokingly. There was nothing funny about this situation, though. "We need to get out fast." Another cough; his throat was burning from all the dust. "You don't have your phone with you, do you?" His was somewhere upstairs, in his office - if it still existed.
The glare she offered Gareth when he had askede for her phone was palpable, she would've already used it if she had it! Wouldn't she? Though her eyebrows softened, she hadn't been thinking clearly. Had she even checked for her phone? She offered an apologetic smile before patting herself down searching, searching, and finding nothing.
Then she found it in her pocket, pulling it out she frowned softly realizing she had crushed it most likely in the explosion given the damage, but the tumble they just took didn't help.
"Ho....."
"How many more floors?"
"Well, obviously not." Hades stopped in his tracks, turning fully towards Wendy. Studying her for a long moment. They weren't anywhere near the hotel at the pier she had actually booked for herself; in fact, he had walked her to the best hotel in town, right by the ocean, the most expensive and exclusive one. It wasn't his - he was only the owner of a bar - but letting her stay there was no problem for someone like him.
"You are far more than that and I am intent on finding out."
She smiled at his words before looking around, clocking the extravagant not hotel, resort they had stumbled upon. Taking a moment before she let out a soft giggle. "It must be the god thing...." she chuckled.
"This..... this is not where I am staying....... I have the budget of a nurse."
“Here?” he questioned, letting Wendy guide his hand before his fingertips ghosted over her skin. A moment later he was bending down to her again, lips gently caressing the spot on her neck he had worked on earlier. These soft moments between them were rarer than he liked them to be. Yes, they were kissing almost daily, but he was often home late after work, stressed, or simply not in the mood. Not to mention how stressed out Wendy often was what with her work and having to entertain their son. Tonight, though, the stars seemed to align perfectly for them.
“I found another note in my briefcase today…” Gareth murmured without moving too much from her neck. “Any idea how it got there?”
The way she hummed, almost moaned as his lips found the place on her neck she had so desperately wanted had her melting into him. It wasn't they they didn't kiss, they kissed as naturally as breathing. Almost as if the greeting, or farewell was a habit. The kiss to his cheek when he was drinking his morning tea, or the top of her head. This? This was something else, this was consuming. This was the reminder that despite the love, despite the trials and tribulations. There was passion.
Chuckling softly, she remembered the note she had left in his briefcase. She always left something when she knew he had a budget meeting, but this morning she had felt cheeky.
Turning to face him she found her hands twisting into his shirt. "Someone must have been flirting with you."
To try racing had been a spontaneous decision for Eric; he had always liked fast cars, had even once participated in some kind of cannonball run across the US. He thought of himself as quite skilled, so it had only been natural to start professional racing. To feel the engine rumble through his entire body, the way the car reacted to his movements. The adrenaline shooting through him. The full focus demanded. God, he loved it!
His gaze shot to the side for a brief second when he noticed Wendy right next to him, the grip on the steering wheel tightening. This was just for fun, he had to remind himself, not for a prize or anything else. Just a fun little race between the two of them. Still, the ambition was strong.
There is a moment, when you're racing...... when the car listed to your every command, when you are in complete harmony with yourself, the car and the track that was transcendent. It was, in her estimation, when you were no longer driving but almost flying. She was slowly reaching that moment where she wasn't just driving, but transcended into that moment of perfection. Starting to pull away ever so slightly, when she felt the tears streaming down her face as memories of loss, love, and so much more began to flood her senses.
Before rounding one of the corners, she slammed on the breaks stopping in the middle of the track as she tried to settled her breathing.
He couldn’t blame her for feeling that way. To him, it was normal; there was rarely anything that could surprise him. Well, except for the fact that this woman, Wendy, had memories and feelings from another life. Hades wasn’t quite sure if he liked it, though. Wendy was Wendy. She wasn’t anyone else, he didn’t want her to be anyone else.
"Wait until you see Cerberus..." A smile briefly crossed his lips. “It…can be overwhelming, yes,” the god agreed. “Usually mortals don’t get to know any of this, though.” Much less meet any of the gods. “You have always been special…”
She chuckled softly, before her brain had caught the name: cerberus... the three headed dog. Surely that of all things was just legend. Though she couldn't help the blush when he had said she was special.
"I... I'm just.... me...." she shook her head unsure how to accept the compliment. Looking she tried to figure out just where they had wandered off to in search for the hotel she was staying at.
Eric knew better than to get distracted, especially in racing, and also in his line of business (of which he still hadn’t told Wendy; but it was better that way). Still he couldn’t help but glance over at Wendy now and again as they waited for the green light. He had to remind himself to stop it, to focus on the track, to not let his feelings for her take over. Not now, anyway. There was still time for it later.
The green light flashed up, and his car effortlessly went off. The second he felt the engine, the second he saw everything flash past him, the worries about Wendy were forgotten. His mind only focused on the race between them.
As much as there was a weird pull to the car, something shifted as the lights counted down. Her eyes focusing, and without hesitation her car was off. Feeling the creation of her team under her control was almost like a lullaby from child hood she had forgotten.
She had gotten lost in the way it moved, cornered. She was home once again.
To anyone who was outside now, they would have seemed like a normal couple just walking along the oceanside hand in hand. Two lovebirds who had just had dinner and were now slowly returning to their hotel, although it was already way past midnight. It was odd, but at the same time, Hades liked this. It felt...normal.
He stole a glance at their entwined fingers, and caught himself smiling, before Wendy started laughing. Surprised, the god looked at her. "Mind letting me in on your silent joke?"
She couldn't help but look up at him. "When I decided to come here.... I did not expect to wonder into a bar with my face painted on its wall, meet you again, and now walk along the peer knowing now, that Poseidon is real, Zeus.... Demeter..." the name of Persephone's mother leaving her lips caused her to freeze for just a moment, as if an uncomfortable chill had possessed her for just a moment .
"It's..... a little overwhelming."
“Well, then tell your heart to be careful.” He lifted his brow, though in all honesty, he wasn’t all too serious about his own words. They were a warning, yes, but he just wanted Wendy to know what she could get herself into, that she shouldn’t put her hopes up too high. He didn’t want her to be disappointed in the end.
Hades pulled away, but offered his hand to her. “Let’s go to that hotel by the pier then. I think I have an idea which one you mean.” There were a few, but the god figured it was the most prominent and beautiful one. None other was expected for someone like Wendy.
"I don't know if it will listen." she admitted softly as she took his hand. Something that felt, in a way, like when you first hold hands with the boy you've had a crush on for ages, but with the confidence that it was a life long habit.
She found herself distracted. Partially with moon reflecting on the ocean. Before her face furrowed and she laughed to herself.
It was funny, wasn’t it? How much it turned him on when she was calling him by his full rank and name… Always had, really, and it was somewhat reassuring to know some things had just never changed.
His hand was still holding Wendy’s as he willingly followed her out their son’s bedroom, and Gareth closed the door behind him with just a gentle nudge of his foot. This was their alone-time now, and it was well deserved. “I have been flirting with you all my life, but you never noticed.” His brow rose. Well, in Wendy’s defence, his flirt attempts had never been quite obvious. After all, it had taken some time for the two of them to finally admit their feelings to each other.
When they were stood before the kitchen again, he wrapped his arms around her waist. “Now…where were we?”
Wendy couldn't hide the blush and smile that came to her face when he said he had always been flirting wit her. Though she hadn't noticed, but in her defense? His idea of flirting had been scaring away her boyfriends. Really, she should have seen it sooner though.
"I do believe...." she hummed softly turning so her back was to him, her head leaning to the side.
"There was something about .... the noise I make when you kiss me right here...." taking his hand and placing in on the crook of her neck.
Eric sat behind the wheel of his car, his gaze not leaving Wendy the entire time. He just wanted to be sure she was certain about this; that there were no issues whatsoever. At the slightest doubt, he knew, it was better to stop. All jokes and teasing aside.
He pulled the gloves over his hands, then put on his helmet, making sure everything sat tight and as it should. Racing wasn’t just driving the car; it was a lot of preparing beforehand, and most importantly, doing everything to keep the drivers safe. He gave their spotter a thumbs-up when he was done, then shot Wendy another look, raising his thumb once more – but this time to make sure she was okay.
It was a strange ritual, something she had done that she did not realize was still ingrained in her soul. Her bare hand on the hood with a silent prayer before moving into the car. Gloves on, the spotter at the controls.
Wendy gave Eric a nod before she went almost limp. Her head falling forward, her eyes closed. A centering breath...... before looking back up at the starting line. Waiting...... the anticipation of go, yet for her? Everything went silent.
This was when everything around her ceased to exist, and all that was there was the car and her.
Oh, there were going to be a lot of bruises covering his body soon! Every single limb, every muscle, every nerve, were aching; every motion, no matter how tiny, brought pain. His head was pulsating, and he could feel fresh blood run down his temple. It wouldn’t have surprised him if there were a lot more cuts on his body that he just couldn’t see right now due to the dark. He also nearly missed Wendy’s voice, his ears ringing – and her voice so quiet. Wendy. His eyes widened, and Gareth struggled to get back on his feet, staggering two steps over the rubble before he could get hold on what he assumed was a desk. He swallowed, turning around, squinting his eyes to try and see something – anything – if only a small movement.
“Wendy?” Keep talking, he thought as he made his way through the remnants of the offices, hands blindly outstretched. They found a piece of wall – or was it the ground from above? – which he used to guide himself around it. He frowned. Was that a person over there? “Wendy?” he asked again, staggering towards where he believed he saw someone. And truly, there she was. Without giving it another thought, he cupped her face with both hands. “Are you okay?” he asked, breathless, looking her over as good as possible in the dark. “Are you hurt?”
She hadn't even noticed him approach her as she finally made her way through the rubble and out nearly running into G. Wendy didn't even notice the rebar that had scraped her thigh, that was going to need stitches and likely leave a scar.
She all but collapsed into him, her arms wrapping around his waist when he finally had reached her.
"I don't know....." she admitted. "The adrenaline.... it's going to ...." she shook her head.
"We... we need to get out of here...." she coughed some of the dust and ash from her throat and lungs.
Gareth looked up at her admittance. Not really surprised by it, though. Wendy knew he was a soldier through and through, they had actually first met when he had still been in the SAS, and she had accepted his sense of duty and that it was his entire life and calling. Still, he couldn’t blame her for wanting to keep him at home. Just remembering how happy she had been when he announced he was working for the Ministry of Defence, a bloody desk job – and how happy, and yet somewhat disappointed, she had been when he had been made the Head of MI6. He hadn’t quite understood back then, but then Michael Arthur had come along, and his birth had opened Gareth’s eyes: the need to protect him at all costs, to keep him safe and away from any and all sort of harm.
“I’m afraid we won’t be able to protect him and keep him here forever,” Gareth mused quietly. “But…we can do our best to prepare him for his later life and…to enjoy the time we get to have with him now.” He smiled at Wendy, then reached out to take her hand while standing up, a mischievous little smirk playing around his lips. “Now…we get to have time without him, though…”
G was right of course. They couldn't prevent him from growing up, and they couldn't stop the world from being what it was. All they could do was raise their son the best way they knew how. Though there was a little more feeling of uneasiness that came with knowing just how dark the world could be given her husbands line of work, but at the same time it was also the knowledge of the amazing people who sought to protect it that gave her comfort.
Kissing G's cheek in agreement, before he stood taking her hand,
A blush dancing to her cheeks as she backed up towards the door. "Why, Lieutenant Colonel Gareth Mallory..... are you flirting with me?" she teased playfully. The ever present understanding that she knew and loved every aspect of him on display with the use of his rank... though with it also came memories of when they were just a soldier and a nurse falling in love.
...the moment you fell in love with me
...a time you were hurt because of me
...a time I made you laugh
...a random thought you had about me
…the moment you fell in love with me
In truth, there was not one moment when it had happened. It was a thousand moments. I knew that I would care about you the moment I saw you lost in the hospital...... when we first met. It was mostly in those quiet moments where I could just be myself..... not what anyone expected me to be. I think there was also a moment when you saw my scars and didn't ask.... you didn't need to. You just.... were my safe place.
…a time you were hurt because of me
Because of you? Never.
…a time I made you laugh
the first time you tried to cook me dinner..... I still remember how proud you were to have tried, and the utter look of horror when we had tried to eat it.
…a random thought you had about me
I like when he keeps his beard for a few days after deployment....
What was the exact moment you knew you were in love with Mallory?
"I...." her cheeks turned bright red, but she took a moment to let her mind wander through memories. In truth, there was not one moment when it had happened. It was a thousand moments slowly encasing her entire being.
"I think I knew....... or admitted it to myself one evening when we were just sitting in his flat reading." A smile dancing on her lips, her features soft as she remembered that moment. "The fire was going... he was in the chair sipping some kind of whiskey..... I was on the couch wrapped in a blanket. The rain hitting the window....."
Shaking her head. "He was leaving for Northern Ireland soon, and I just remembered thinking that I could spend the rest of my life with this man sitting in these spots reading...... I think that was when I knew that I was in love with him..... not just loved him....."

“You should be careful. Never trust a god,” Hades warned her. “They only look out for themselves.” True love and loyalty were rare among them – Hades was no angel on that matter, either. Still he could proudly say he distanced himself from the others. Even he, though, hadn’t been faithful to his wife. Well, could he be blamed? Eternity was a damn long time to spend.
“Do you have a place to stay tonight?” Stupid question. Of course she had.
"The hotel.... by the pier."
Wendy's brows furrowed with a playful expression as he warned her not to trust a god. Her head leaning to the side a moment as she let off a soft chuckle that was bright considering the events of the night.
"For the record? I am not trusting Hades, god of the underworld....." biting her lip softly. "I am trusting the feeling in my heart that says to trust you."
At some point during his fall, he had involuntarily let go of Wendy’s hand, and now that he was opening his eyes, blinking, trying to get the stinging pain from them due to the dust, Gareth realised he no longer felt the warmth of her touch. He tried to sit up – but let himself fall back barely a second later, coughing. Every limb, every muscle in his body, was aching. His lung felt as though it was going to explode any moment. He sucked in a breath, then coughed again, and finally managed to roll onto his side with a few pieces of concrete falling off him. Everything hurt – but that wasn’t his priority right now. Wendy was.
“We—” Another cough. “Wendy?” Gareth called out. It was almost pitch black on the floor; the ceiling lamps were, naturally, gone, and the only light source came from outside through the gaping holes in the walls that used to be windows. They were gone, leaving only threatening sharp teeth of glass on the sides here and there. Was that Wendy’s voice, though? It was so quiet, barely above a whisper. “Wendy?” Another try. Gareth pushed himself up, but stayed crouched on the ground. Blinking, trying to adjust to the darkness. Only slowly the dust was settling around him.
She was finally able to shift enough to hear Gareth call out her name. He was close, he sounded close. "G...." she tried to call out again before coughing again. She tried to find her way through the gap in the stone towards the voice calling out her name.
"Gareth...." his full name on her lips in a panic. "I'm here...." the voice a whisper.
She was starting to see the light, looking for movement anything to try and guide her where to go. She started trying to shift from the rubble towards the light, the windows, outside.
"I'm right here...." tears starting to stream down her face from panic, pain, fear? Fear of having lost sight of her husband.
