Exploring Type I Diabetes

The world's population is expected to reach 9.3 billion people by 2050 and if we continue our consumption of fish at the rate we are going we will completely deplete our fish stock by 2020. Steps need to be taken in order to prevent this situation considering that fish is the main source of protein for people in developing countries. One way to prevent this is to put more time and energy into fish farming to make it the most sustainable practice it can be.

The are many factors associated with open-net pen fish farming that are not sustainable and need to be addressed such as overnutrientalization, escapes, particulate pollution and welfare of the animals around the cages. If all of these problems were to be addressed using better management and regulation then this could have potential to be the most sustainable practice for producing fish.

Food myths

There are a lot of myths about diabetes that have been created through out the years, like people with diabetes cannot preform certain jobs or practice certain hobbies because of their disease to name a few. One of the most interesting myths that I have heard people mention in my time in school is that people with diabetes can only eat certain diabetic foods.....

Not quite. Those with type II should be careful about the diet that they eat to monitor carbs to help with decreased insulin resistance but type I diabetics in general have the same nutritional needs of an individual their age with out the disease.

This means that if a ten year old wants to eat cake at a birthday party, they can.  As long as the amount of carbs are known then insulin can be administered to maintain blood glucose levels and he or she can go on eating and playing just like all the other kids at the party.

On the other side, type II diabetics can splurge when they want because some of them are using insulin and can use that to maintain their glucose levels. Otherwise they do not eat special diabetic foods as much as they should be aware of the carbs that they are consuming and trying to stay with in a certain range of total carbs for the day.

The Cost of a Pancreas

A person with type one diabetes will on average accrue $13,700 a year in healthcare costs $7,900 of that for diabetes care and supply costs.

Diabetes is increasing at an exponential rate, some credited to genetics some not but the cost of the disease is increasing right along with it. Insurance covers about 60% of costs are covered by insurance, leaving those without insurance paying the $7,900 above and those who have it paying about $3,500 a year. What could you buy with that money?? When your pancreas works the way it should its not something you have to account for. The American Diabetes Association breaks it down nicely for us who are lucky enough to not have to think about it.

Type one diabetes is becoming more and more prominent in people that are not genetically predisposed to it. There have been many studies done looking at many nutritional factors including vitamin D, gluten and most commonly cow's milk. Too early introduction of cow's milk into a child's diet has been correlated with the formation of islet autoantibodies.
